High Fat Diet & Social Isolation: Interactive Effects On Pain, Cognition, & Neuroinflammation, Ian M. Campuzano
High Fat Diet & Social Isolation: Interactive Effects On Pain, Cognition, & Neuroinflammation, Ian M. Campuzano
Research Psychology Theses
Prior research has established a role for both social isolation and exposure to high fat Western diets in altering a range of behaviors from reduced memory performance to increased depression-like behaviors. The present study scrutinizes the interplay among these variables during the peri-adolescent developmental phase, utilizing Long-Evans rats as the experimental model. Our overarching hypothesis is that rats exposed to either social isolation, a high-fat diet, or both will result in heightened pain sensitivity, diminished cognitive flexibility, and increased neuroinflammatory responses within brain regions implicated in sociability, cognition, memory, and pain processing. Behavioral flexibility will be assessed using a maze-based …

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder And Anxiety: An Evidence-Based Approach Exploring Interventions For Minimally Verbal Children With Asd And Anxiety, Zolzaya Batjargal
Research Psychology Theses
With approximately 1 in 100 children worldwide affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (WHO, 2023), the urgency for effective interventions is underscored. This study investigates evidence-based interventions for anxiety in minimally verbal children with ASD. The study examines CBT and ABA therapy effectiveness over 10 months for children with ASD, aiming to enhance their quality of life and well-being with tailored interventions. This research proposal hypothesizes reduced anxiety symptoms post-treatment, stable intellectual functioning, improved adaptive behavior skills, and better outcomes with higher parental involvement.

The present study investigates the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the consumption of porn, shifts in the production of porn consumed between men and women, and the breakdown of any pattern in adult content via film, pictures, and audio. A quantitative approach was done by using R to analyze data pulled off of Pornhub, Reddit’s GoneWildAudio subreddit, and Archive of Our Own from 2018 to 2023. Statistical inference and modeling is used to attempt to find a pattern in the production of online porn across three mediums over several years before, during, and after the pandemic. Regardless of events …
Reaping In The Dark, Rae Perez
Reaping In The Dark, Rae Perez
Honors Projects
This project, reaping in the dark, aims to answer the question ‘How do we live in a world where we were never meant to survive?’ Surrounded by heinous war and deathmaking, violent vulnerabilities, and demands that our own bodies must be contributions in the machinations of killing and exploitation, I found myself simultaneously isolated by the devastation, and empowered by solidarity and care networks and coalitions being formed in real time. In particular, I take part in and document my grief and grieving, love and loving in response to the new cycles of escalating violence in Gaza, the …
Salmon Mislabeling Rates Uncovered In Restaurants And Grocery Stores In Seattle, Jewel L. Garcia, Jewel L. Garcia
Salmon Mislabeling Rates Uncovered In Restaurants And Grocery Stores In Seattle, Jewel L. Garcia, Jewel L. Garcia
Honors Projects
Salmon has been a cultural icon in Seattle, Washington for many generations because it has and continues to sustain the people who reside on this land. Seafood fraud, in which a seafood’s genetic identity does not match its vendor-claimed identity, is not a new phenomenon, and many studies have been conducted internationally to explore the extent of this issue. With human and environmental health concerns on the line, a salmon fraud (mislabeling) study must be conducted in a state where immensely high salmon sales and serious recreational efforts occur to assess Seattle’s marketplace honesty. By genetically barcoding the highly conserved …

"Me? Be A Coach?" A Grounded Theory Investigation Of Coach Identity Among Managers Who Coach, Sara Mary Cannon
"Me? Be A Coach?" A Grounded Theory Investigation Of Coach Identity Among Managers Who Coach, Sara Mary Cannon
Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations
In the 21st century, organizational expectations of managers have shifted away from traditional command-and-control toward a model of facilitating employee development (Ibarra & Scoular, 2019). Modern managers are expected to be good coaches, even though the coaching discipline is growing faster than it can be regulated (Garvin, 2013; Sherman & Freas, 2004). This research investigated the lived experiences of managers who coach and their emergent concept of identity through the lens of manager as instrument. I utilized a constructivist grounded theory approach to generate insights about coach identity experiences of managers who coach. This perspective and methodology provided an opportunity …
Demystifying The "Social Media Algorithm": The Legacy Of Surveillance Advertising And Platformization, Garrett Crites
Demystifying The "Social Media Algorithm": The Legacy Of Surveillance Advertising And Platformization, Garrett Crites
Honors Projects
Recently, more individuals are becoming aware that they are being served content on social media platforms by automated means. Due to the lack of transparency, a colloquial understanding of the “social media algorithm” has emerged in popular discourse. To shed light on the real–world phenomena that these ideas surround, I look at the rise of surveillance advertising and the platformization of the internet in conjunction with the automated platform operations employed by large social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and X. In doing so I provide a clearer idea of the colloquial “social media algorithm” to encourage the reader …
Deciphering Authority: The Balance Of Powers In Local Government, Rayna Martin
Deciphering Authority: The Balance Of Powers In Local Government, Rayna Martin
Honors Projects
The Balance of Powers Principle, while well-applied in the spheres of federal and state government, is not much discussed when it comes to local government structures. This paper seeks to compare the strengths of some of the more popular forms of municipal governance (i.e., the council-manager and mayor-council systems) to determine, to what extent, the Balance of Powers principle applies in an American local government context. The author then subsequently argues that this principle can be utilized to propose a preferred, counterbalanced model of city government, that uses and relies upon the strengths of all three major authority figures in …

“I’M Not Your Friend”: Content Type Influence On Parasocial Relationship Formation On Youtube, Sage E. Driscoll
Honors Projects
Media consumers are increasingly using online video platforms, such as YouTube which has record high numbers of viewers and subscribers compared to other media sites. This viewership increases the popularity of content creators who can be divided into two main categories; relationship-based or idea-based content. YouTube viewers bond with their favorite celebrities which has translated into parasocial relationships. In this study, explanatory qualitative research examines whether the two types of content found on YouTube, relationship-based or idea-based, influences the parasocial relationships formed. As the results show, relationship-based YouTubers consistently form more intense parasocial relationships than idea-based YouTubers.

Honors Projects
The Eras Tour Verified Fan Sale in 2022 revealed major flaws in the ticket-buying process, which many attributed to Ticketmaster's dominant industry position. The exclusive contracts of Ticketmaster have been their source of gaining a competitive advantage in the ticketing industry, but many have been critical of these contracts for restricting competition in this industry. This research analyzes the effect of the exclusive contracts of the merged Ticketmaster-Live Nation entity on competition in the ticketing industry through the lens of prominent antitrust scholars. Previous literature reveals differing ideas about whether exclusive contracts are an exclusionary practice and literature identifies the …
“The Hero Of My Own Life”: The Purpose Of The Fictional Self In The Life Writings Of Mary Wollstonecraft And Charles Dickens, Jessica M. Day
“The Hero Of My Own Life”: The Purpose Of The Fictional Self In The Life Writings Of Mary Wollstonecraft And Charles Dickens, Jessica M. Day
Honors Projects
This paper looks at Letters written in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark by Mary Wollstonecraft and David Copperfield by Charles Dickens as significant texts that combine fiction and life writing. Looking at fictional and autobiographical elements within each text, this paper argues that these authors manipulate genre to make significant claims about feminism and child activism. They participate in self-crafting—taking the self, something that is personal, and making it public and political. This paper argues that fiction allows the life writer to expand past the limitations of a single lifetime and speak to truths larger than the self. Letters written …
A Survey Of Practical Haskell: Parsing, Interpreting, And Testing, Parker Landon
A Survey Of Practical Haskell: Parsing, Interpreting, And Testing, Parker Landon
Honors Projects
Strongly typed pure functional programming languages like Haskell have historically been confined to academia as vehicles for programming language research. While features of functional programming have greatly influenced mainstream programming languages, the imperative programming style remains pervasive in practical software development. This paper illustrates the practical utility of Haskell and pure functional programming by exploring “hson,” a scripting language for processing JSON developed in Haskell. After introducing the relevant features of Haskell to the unfamiliar reader, this paper reveals how hson leverages functional programming to implement parsing, interpreting, and testing. By showcasing how Haskell’s language features enable the creation of …

An Anglican-Episcopal Theology Of Desire & Prayer Book Liturgical Asceticism, Kyler F. Granados
An Anglican-Episcopal Theology Of Desire & Prayer Book Liturgical Asceticism, Kyler F. Granados
Honors Projects
This project, in response to the theological retrieval of desire conducted by Anglican theologian Sarah Coakley in her God, Sexuality, and the Self, descriptively analyses the place of “desire” in the language of the Daily Office and Eucharistic liturgies of the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer--the regula of Anglican Christians. It asks, “How do the liturgies of the Prayer Book address, direct, and ultimately entrust our desires to the transforming work of the Holy Spirit?” In the face of the descriptive, it also presents a constructive model for discipleship in “Prayer Book Liturgical Asceticism” a life of "common …
Analysis Of Green Data Center Efforts And Energy Usage, Dillon J. Goicoechea
Analysis Of Green Data Center Efforts And Energy Usage, Dillon J. Goicoechea
Honors Projects
This paper is an undergraduate level literature review and analysis of research surrounding the Green Data Center phenomenon. Review of work covering energy usage, data usage, usage predictions, and strategies for decreasing energy requirements is the main analysis of this work. The analysis shows that while data centers are becoming greener, the increase in usage of their capacities is negating those efficiency increases. The increase in the energy efficiency of data centers is crucial, however, there must be made efforts to lower computational and data usage to help achieve lower energy usage of data centers.

Most importantly, the works I have written and arranged for this concert are also included.
'I Didn't Know What Sex Was': Effects Of Christian Youth Group Involvement On Women's Sexuality In Adulthood, Aubrey K. Rhoadarmer
'I Didn't Know What Sex Was': Effects Of Christian Youth Group Involvement On Women's Sexuality In Adulthood, Aubrey K. Rhoadarmer
Honors Projects
This article analyzes the ways Christian youth group involvement in high school affects women’s perspectives and opinions on sex later in their lives. Through the intertwining of 12 stories, this research sheds light on how both implicit and explicit social and religious messages can shape women’s opinions of their sexuality. Themes include harms caused by purity pledges, unfair expectations placed on women during their “first time,” the pressure women feel to become wives and mothers, the importance of openness around discussing sexuality — particularly by parents — and how multiple communities influence women’s sexual development.
The Translingual College Classroom: Repurposing Essays For Inclusivity And Practicality, Maxwell P. Hayden
The Translingual College Classroom: Repurposing Essays For Inclusivity And Practicality, Maxwell P. Hayden
Honors Projects
This article adapts Peter Elbow’s framework for the teacherless writing classroom laid out in Writing Without Teachers for two purposes: first, to create a standardized means of measurement along new axes for use in writing rubrics and, second, to be more accommodating to nonformal English dialects. As writing pedagogy makes moves to be more understanding of the breadth of voices, typical rubric guidelines display an outdated understanding of the essay as a format. Elbow’s depiction of scholarly writing as an exploration of the self allows for a new grading paradigm to surface, one that reinforces academic English as a standard …
Resilience In Refugee Youth: A Review Of Contributing Factors And Potential Barriers, Anna J. Kreisman
Resilience In Refugee Youth: A Review Of Contributing Factors And Potential Barriers, Anna J. Kreisman
Honors Projects
While past research has predominantly centered on the trauma and challenges faced by refugees, there is a current shift toward examining refugee lives through a lens of resilience. The purpose of the present investigation is to examine the contributing factors and potential barriers to resilience in young refugees. I conducted a literature review of research from the past 24 years, primarily searching PsycINFO, Academic Search Complete, and SocINDEX. The review findings demonstrate that resilience can stem from individual, family, school, and community-level factors. The findings further indicate several potential barriers to resilience. In addition, I briefly discuss mental health interventions …
Helping The Home Cook: How Unsupervised Machine Learning Can Prevent Food Waste, Ryan B. Watson
Helping The Home Cook: How Unsupervised Machine Learning Can Prevent Food Waste, Ryan B. Watson
Honors Projects
A common problem for the home cook is having too much of one food ingredient leftover, then not knowing what to do with it. To alleviate this problem, I propose using an unsupervised machine learning model to recommend recipes based on what ingredients the home cook wants to use. This model is built with FastText and trained on the recipe ingredients in the RecipeNLG dataset. Recipes are recommended based on which recipe ingredient set is most similar to the recipe ingredients provided in the user input. This solution will reduce consumer food waste by giving the home cook the information …

"Can You Just Speak Normal?": How Language Summer Camps Affect White Children's Participation In The Linguistically, Culturally, And Racially Diverse United States, Mary M. Bruggeman
Honors Projects
The United States is becoming an increasingly diverse county. Young children are at the best age to learn about language and race, but the way that language programs address the intersection of language and race echoes the issues present in the rest of society. Learning a language in a racially diverse environment improves racial attitudes, but the only way to get to the root of the issue of inequality among individuals who speak another language, have a different culture, or are a part of a different racial group is to discuss the topic of inequality in the United States directly. …
Repurposing Clinically Relevant Metabolic Inhibitor Drugs, Difluoromethylornithine (Dfmo) And Orlistat, For Gammaherpesvirus Replication, Lay Paw
Honors Projects
Viruses, including herpesviruses, contribute up to 15% of all human cancers. Murine gammaherpesvirus-68 (MHV-68), a pathogen commonly found in mice, is studied due to its shared homology with several human herpesviruses. Studies done in the Delgado lab via metabolomics analysis show MHV-68 infected cells increase host cell metabolism. Clinically relevant metabolic inhibitor drugs, ɑ-Difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) and Orlistat, respectively block polyamine and lipid production demonstrated a reduction in MHV-68 viral production. Repurposing clinically relevant drugs through the exploration of a different target shows great promise in reducing oncogenic viral titer.
The Perpetual Foreigner: Modeling Cycles Of Asian American Discrimination, Philip Min
The Perpetual Foreigner: Modeling Cycles Of Asian American Discrimination, Philip Min
Honors Projects
Through an Asian American perspective catalyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this research investigates the concept of the state of the perpetual foreigner for Asian Americans and the subsequent cycling of race-related tensions. To define the state of foreignness for Asian Americans, this is understood first through Kim’s model of Racial Triangulation, which intends to model the relationships of racial groups in the United States – namely between Black, White, and Asians – through concepts of civic ostracization and relative valorization that relate directly to foreignness and hierarchy. This is then further expanded upon through the creation of a separate model, …
A Romantic Austen: The Discordant Feminist Discourse Of Adapting Sense And Sensibility, Evan Teigland
A Romantic Austen: The Discordant Feminist Discourse Of Adapting Sense And Sensibility, Evan Teigland
Honors Projects
This undergraduate thesis explores the intertextual and critical conversations around Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, and the 1995 screen adaptation of the same name, with a focus on how each text understands the interplay between feminine romance and feminine agency. A non-essentialist theory of adaptation is applied to construct an interpretive model that esteems Emma Thompson’s version of the story and considers its consequence to different communities of Austen readership, which is measured by the distinctly feminist themes detectable in the sexuality of Sense and Sensibility fanfiction. This investigation uncovers the importance of expanding the interpretive power and possibilities of …
Defining Healthy Love: A Narrative Review Of Purity Culture's Impact On Healing From Sexual Assault, Gloria L. Diehl
Defining Healthy Love: A Narrative Review Of Purity Culture's Impact On Healing From Sexual Assault, Gloria L. Diehl
Honors Projects
Over the last few decades, evangelical Christian teachings on sexuality have become an area of increasing interest as those who grew up in Purity Culture experience long-term effects on their world-concept. One area where the effects are particularly potent is attitudes regarding sexual assault. Research on healing from sexual assault identifies social responses to reports as a defining factor for the direction of healing. This literature review looks at how social support is negatively impacted by purity culture teachings through the endorsement of rape myth acceptance and victim blaming attitudes.
The Survivability Hierarchy Behind Bars: Themes, Reforms, And Prevention Program Evaluations In Washington State Jail Suicides, Rocky B. Marks
The Survivability Hierarchy Behind Bars: Themes, Reforms, And Prevention Program Evaluations In Washington State Jail Suicides, Rocky B. Marks
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Across jails nationwide, suicide remains the leading cause of death. Suicide has been the leading cause of death for U.S. jail inmates for over 40 years. In Washington State, suicide accounts for 47% of all jail fatalities while incarcerated. To address this critical issue, the U.S. Justice Department set best practices for jails to follow for suicide prevention programs in 1989. Yet, these best practices have not reduced the disproportionate rate of jail suicides. Far from a decrease, suicide deaths for jail inmates rose 13% in the last 20 years. This dissertation involved three methods of analysis for this critical …
Moderating Effect Of Secondary Victimization On The Relationship Between Resilience And Sexual Assault Coping Self-Efficacy, Jamie Layton
Moderating Effect Of Secondary Victimization On The Relationship Between Resilience And Sexual Assault Coping Self-Efficacy, Jamie Layton
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Sexual assault is a prevalent public health concern that effects thousands of people every year. How each of these individuals responds is different. There are multiple factors that can impact someone’s response to sexual assault, one of which is resilience, and another is secondary victimization. Legal advocacy programs can be used to help reduce secondary victimization and increase sexual assault coping self-efficacy, while controlling for age and race. This dissertation examines the way that secondary victimization moderates the relationship between resilience and sexual assault coping self-efficacy. Participants were at least 18 years old, a cisgender woman, English speaking, and a …
