Contextualizing And Integrating Practices: Reclaiming Authenticity Lost From Translating Workplace Engineering Practices Into K-12 Standards, Anne E. Leak, Lindsay M. Owens, Kelly Norris Martin, Benjamin M. Zwickl

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

K-12 students need to become familiar with engineering because 21st-century careers integrate engineering practices across all science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. While the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) emphasize learning real science and engineering practices, further work is needed to authenticate engineering for K-12 education. The NGSS are presented in a way that merges a single general practice with a core disciplinary idea and cross-cutting concept. Based on this framing and underlying epistemology, NGSS engineering practices are often implemented as overgeneralized, isolated, and largely context-neutral. Yet, in the STEM workplace, practices are rarely done in isolation from one …

Engineering Technology Programs And Technical Standards: Investigating Library Access And Course Integration, Margaret Phillips, Paul B Mcpherson, Danielle Leclerc

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Due to ABET accreditation requirements and industry expectations, integrating technical standards into Engineering Technology (ET) curricula is crucial for student success. However, previous studies have shown that faculty report access and knowledge challenges in working to integrate standards into ET course content. Additionally, academic librarians have long acknowledged there are many issues with providing access to standards to campus users, such as high costs and extensive digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. The purpose of this study is to conduct an environmental scan of library websites at institutions with ET programs to investigate library-provided access to standards and to survey ET …

Examining Business Students’ Workplace Information Use During Internships And Co-Ops, Margaret Phillips, Heather Howard, Garrett Brewster Jan 2022

Examining Business Students’ Workplace Information Use During Internships And Co-Ops, Margaret Phillips, Heather Howard, Garrett Brewster

Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials

Information literacy is essential for business students as they prepare for the workplace they will enter after leaving the university. Prior to graduation, students must also prepare for the information needs they will experience during internships and co-ops. To optimize instruction and teach students the information literacy skills they will need on-the-job, librarians need to understand what information sources employers require students to use during internship/co-op experiences and in what ways. In this study we surveyed business students and alumni at a large Midwestern university who had completed an internship or co-op regarding their information use during these workplace experiences.

Integrating Technical Standards Into Et Curricula To Meet Abet Standards And Industry Needs, Paul B Mcpherson, Margaret Phillips, Kyle Reiter Jan 2019

Integrating Technical Standards Into Et Curricula To Meet Abet Standards And Industry Needs, Paul B Mcpherson, Margaret Phillips, Kyle Reiter

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

With technical standards affecting nearly every aspect of our daily lives, from computers to the components and materials used in car engines, it is critical that undergraduate students are educated on the importance of standards and provided with opportunities to locate and apply relevant technical standards to real world situations. In addition, with ABET accreditation requiring students to have a “basic understanding and familiarity with,” and experience “using” codes and standards, faculty need to consider how such material can be naturally integrated into the curriculum.

At Purdue University, education about codes and standards has been integrated into the mechanical engineering …

Inspiring Innovation With Patent Information Literacy In The Engineering Technology Curriculum, David Zwicky, Margaret Phillips Dec 2018

Inspiring Innovation With Patent Information Literacy In The Engineering Technology Curriculum, David Zwicky, Margaret Phillips

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Patents have wide appeal to students, faculty, and employers and can be a potent tool for integrating information literacy (IL) into engineering and technology curricula. There is evidence to show that students use patents to assess the patentability of their design ideas, explore the state of the art in a given area of technology, and to inspire creativity in their work. Faculty use patents and other complementary forms of gray literature to go beyond the traditional IL world of scholarly literature and engage students with information problems that reflect real-world design challenges. Working with patents allows students to develop strategic, …

Standards Are Everywhere: A Freely Available Introductory Online Educational Program On Standardization For Product Development, Margaret Phillips, Michael Fosmire, Paul B Mcpherson

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The collaboration between the Purdue Libraries and the Purdue Polytechnic Institute on standards education goes back to the 1980’s.[i] With a shared goal of preparing students for success after graduation, the Libraries and (then) Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) devised activities and instruction to show students that they will need to be able to find information ‘beyond the textbook’ to solve the problems they will face in the workplace. They will need specific information that relates to their particular circumstance, whether it is a material property, production technique, or an industry standard.

In recent years, the Libraries and Polytechnic …

Snow And Ice Performance Standards, Bob Mccullouch, Barry Partridge, Samy Noureldin Oct 2013

Snow And Ice Performance Standards, Bob Mccullouch, Barry Partridge, Samy Noureldin

JTRP Technical Reports

Performance standards are used extensively at INDOT to establish and measure performance in many different operations. One area that extensively uses standards is in Maintenance Operations. Currently INDOT has defined three Level of Service(LOS) standards for winter operations. These standards describe pavement conditions during winter weather events and are subjective in nature. A more quantifiable standard would improve the evaluation of winter operations.

This project produced a performance standard based on vehicle speeds during a storm impact period. The period is defined as the time between the beginning and end of a winter storm. The performance standard is modeled after …

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

This research focuses on the development of a standard digital forensics master’s curriculum. A current state analysis has been done of various master’s programs across the United States. Each of the courses were analyzed and compared against digital forensic domains from previous studies, including the Digital Forensic Certification Board’s (2009) KSA domains and Beebe and Clark’s (2006) knowledge domains. The courses were charted under their appropriate categories in an effort to identify the topics covered within each curriculum. Both a qualitative and frequency analysis were then completed to review the domains covered within each program. The results showed a wide …

A Parallel Color-Based Particle Filter For Object Tracking, Henry Medeiros, Johnny Park, Avinash Kak Jan 2008

A Parallel Color-Based Particle Filter For Object Tracking, Henry Medeiros, Johnny Park, Avinash Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Porting well known computer vision algorithms to low power, high performance computing devices such as SIMD linear processor arrays can be a challenging task. One especially useful such algorithm is the color-based particle filter, which has been applied successfully by many research groups to the problem of tracking nonrigid objects. In this paper, we propose an implementation of the color-based particle filter suitable for SIMD processors. The main focus of our work is on the parallel computation of the particle weights. This step is the major bottleneck of standard implementations of the color-based particle filter since it requires the knowledge …
