Doing Translation History In Eebo And Ecco, Kristine J. Anderson

Libraries Research Publications

Burgeoning interest in the history of translation is evident in the recent publication of such works as the ongoing 5-volume Oxford History of Literary Translation into English (Oxford University Press, 2005- ) and the Encyclopedia of Literary Translation Into English (Fitzroy Dearborn, 2000). The fact that massive corpora of English texts are now available as EEBO and ECCO opens up possibilities to take this research to a new level and move it beyond the realm of literary translation where the majority of existing scholarship has focused so far. The essay examines EEBO and ECCO and the ESTC, which catalogs the …

Providing An Oai-Pmh Interface To The Storage Resource Broker With Oaisrb, Michael Witt, Jigar Kadakia

Libraries Research Publications

The OAISRB software was developed by Michael Witt and Jigar Kadakia of the Purdue University Libraries provide an Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) interface to expose metadata from digital objects residing on the Storage Resource Broker (SRB) to OAI service providers. By harvesting metadata from the SRB, grid resources such as large research datasets from computational sciences can be represented alongside more conventional digital library objects such as e-prints and digitized archival collections. This poster was presented at the 2nd International Digital Curation Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, on November 22, 2006.

What Archives Reveal: The Hidden Poems Of Amelia Earhart, Sammie L. Morris

Libraries Research Publications

The importance of primary source materials to scholarship is undeniable. Primary source materials can verify or contradict information accepted as true in history books and other secondary sources. They can tell the whole, or at least more complete, story of events. Unlike secondary sources, primary source materials offer first-hand accounts from the past, bringing history closer and making it feel more real. It can even be argued that primary source materials are less susceptible to the loss or misinterpretation of information over time in subsequent edition revisions. In particular among primary source materials, manuscripts such as diaries and letters offer …

As the number of retrospective digitization projects of journal content increases, there is a need to assess the impact of these projects on the productivity of researchers. Librarians making collection development decisions about acquiring these backfiles need to know how useful they are to researchers. This study provides data on usage of a range of years of the Physical Review, and citation information from Physical Review Letters to other Physical Review articles. The usage of the online archive of Physical Review articles indicates that articles are accessed all the way back to the first issue, with an average number of …

Case Studies In Managing Collections That Grow, Sammie L. Morris, Pam Hackbart-Dean

Libraries Research Publications

Almost all archivists have at one time or another confronted the issue of managing additions to existing archival or manuscript collections. Managing these types of collections can prove extremely challenging, even for experienced professionals. Archivists have several options for making these types of collections available to researchers, but it is not always clear which option is best. Archivists from Purdue University and Georgia State University will discuss two of the options in the following case studies on managing growing collections. These case studies are meant to serve as examples for other archivists who may be faced with managing similar collections. …

Niels Dalgaard remarks in "Den gode gamle fremtid," his treatise on Danish science fiction of the 1970's, that "a genre such as SF develops through a dialogue with its neighboring genres, and when it is moved from one genre landscape to another (e.g., from one national literature to another), and thus gets new neighbors, new kinds of works will result." Equal Access: What Does The Digital Revolution Mean For Library Web Sites?, Megan R. Sapp, Amy S. Van Epps

Libraries Research Publications

Librarians have used the principle of equal access to protect the rights of patrons for years. In light of the digital revolution that has happened in the past ten years, equal access has taken on a new significance. The digital revolution has produced a new patron class who primarily access the library’s resources through the library website. These patrons, primarily undergraduate college students, are technologically savvy, have high expectations for customer service, and are format agnostic, prizing resource proximity over quality. Based on this understanding of our new patrons, librarians must seek to create equal access through the library website.
