Fraternity In Politics: New Scholarship And Publications From Latin America, Rodrigo Mardones Z. Oct 2012

Fraternity In Politics: New Scholarship And Publications From Latin America, Rodrigo Mardones Z.

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

In this article, the author reviews a book series on fraternity, published in Spanish since 2006, that is the result of a new interest among Latin American scholars in the topic of fraternity. Most of the books in the series are edited volumes that include perspectives from several disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities. Latin American scholars have responded to an intellectual challenge brought from Italy to the region by Antonio Baggio’s seminal work on this topic. In the last five years, studies on fraternity have expanded throughout Latin America, as they have increasingly captured the attention from …

Intellectual Strangers No More? Peter Singer And Roman Catholicism On Ecological Concern, Charles C. Camosy Oct 2012

Intellectual Strangers No More? Peter Singer And Roman Catholicism On Ecological Concern, Charles C. Camosy

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

Peter Singer’s approach to ethics as a utilitarian preference seems to have little to say to Christian ethics. But for a host of important issues, and in particular for those related to ecological ethics, this article argues that this perception is fundamentally mistaken. When comparing Singer’s views to a Roman Catholic approach, we find that their disagreement with regard to ecological concern, though significant and important to address, is surprisingly narrow—limited to topics such as intrinsic value and overpopulation. We find broad agreement not only with regard to the seriousness of our ecological problems but more importantly about the radical …

The "Yes" Under Every "No", David L. Schindler Oct 2012

The "Yes" Under Every "No", David L. Schindler

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article attempts a proposal regarding the center of the charism of Chiara Lubich and Focolare, drawing also from a retreat given by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. The proposal is that we must penetrate to the “yes” that is straining to come out into being in all those places and ways in which the world, at least on its surfaces, appears to be saying “no.”

A Spirituality That Inspires Ontology: The Discovery Of God-Love And The Renewal Of Ontology, Thomas Norris Oct 2012

A Spirituality That Inspires Ontology: The Discovery Of God-Love And The Renewal Of Ontology, Thomas Norris

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

Charisms lie at the root of great spiritualities, and great spiritualities not only provide ways of living the gospel in harmony with the tradition of the church but also inspire and renew cultures. Chiara Lubich and her companions discovered God-Love under the bombs pulverizing Trent between 1943 and 1945, the pearl of the gospel in the new commandment, and the reality of Jesus present among those united in his name. This article reflects on the insights emerging from those discoveries for philosophy, in particular, for ontology. The result is a Trinitarian ontology that highlights the centrality of relationship.

Spirituality And Trinitarian Theology In The Thought And Life Of Chiara Lubich, Maria Voce Oct 2012

Spirituality And Trinitarian Theology In The Thought And Life Of Chiara Lubich, Maria Voce

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author presents and describes four essential traits of the new spirituality of communion that is a fruit of the charism received by Chiara Lubich, and the theology that is being developed from this charism. She does so in the context of telling the personal story of Chiara’s experience, especially during a period of illumination referred to as “Paradise ’49.” That experience of the mystery of the Trinity illumined the theological depth of the Focolare’s life of communion on earth as a reflection of the Trinity in heaven. The author concludes with comments on the effects of this life of …

Entry Into The Paradise Of '49 And Biblical Revelation, Gérard Rossé Oct 2012

Entry Into The Paradise Of '49 And Biblical Revelation, Gérard Rossé

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article explores some texts in which Chiara Lubich speaks about the beginning of her mystical experience during the summer of 1949 that is known as “Paradise ’49.” This exploration seeks to understand these texts in the light of biblical revelation, in particular Pauline and Johannine theology. The author focuses on two aspects. The first of these concerns the role of living the Word of God leading up to this experience. The second concentrates on what Chiara wrote about the special circumstances in which the mystical experience began after a “Pact” made with Igino Giordani, a noted Catholic writer and …

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

Claritas offers a platform for scholarly inquiry from a fresh perspective—that of unity. It must be said at the outset that this unity, to be true to itself, requires diversity. So, our journal provides a forum for serious scholarship and conversation between people who share a similar vision of the value of a more united world. In this way, the journal hopes to contribute to building an international “culture” of unity.

Jewish Identity And Jewish-Christian Dialogue: A View From Argentina, Abraham Skorka Mar 2012

Jewish Identity And Jewish-Christian Dialogue: A View From Argentina, Abraham Skorka

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article emphasizes the dramatic need for a deep and substantial dialogue between Christians and Jews in the present. Abraham Joshua Heschel’s call, in his famous “No Religion is an Island,” is presented as an actual message for today. It is shown that despite the clashes between Jews and Christians since the very beginning of Christianity, generations of great Jewish scholars have stressed the importance of the interfaith dialogue for the construction of a better humanity. A review of the very important development of the Jewish–Catholic dialogue since Nostra Aetate in Argentina is also presented.

Mother Teresa And The Bodhisattva Ideal: A Buddhist View, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Mar 2012

Mother Teresa And The Bodhisattva Ideal: A Buddhist View, Karma Lekshe Tsomo

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The notion of the bodhisattva, the selfless individual who is dedicated to alleviating the sufferings of others, is traditionally articulated within a Mahāyāna Buddhist framework. The question posed here is whether and to what extent this religious ideal can be conceived of, or instantiated by, individuals whose religiosity is framed by a different set of beliefs and values, taking the Roman Catholic Sister of Charity, Mother Teresa, as an example. The broader question of commensurability arises when the criteria for qualifying as a bodhisattva, set within a specifically Mahāyāna context, are superimposed upon a figure who is solidly …

A Buddhist-Catholic Dialogue Of Life In Japan: Finding Shared Values For Global Collaboration For The Common Good, Cinto Busquet Mar 2012

A Buddhist-Catholic Dialogue Of Life In Japan: Finding Shared Values For Global Collaboration For The Common Good, Cinto Busquet

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

During the past half century, there have been many examples of Buddhist-Christian dialogues in Japan. This article analyzes the dialogue between members of the Risshō Kōsei-kai association and the Focolare Movement, a dialogue that is based on a friendship and a deep spiritual unity that comes from living radically according to one’s own religion and being attentive and open to the other’s. From their dialogue of life, these Christians and Buddhists have discovered common values based on worldviews that, in some cases, are quite different. The shared values have become the foundation of an interreligious collaboration that is open to …

Economy Of Communion: A Sociological Inquiry On A Contemporary Charismatic Inspiration In Economic And Social Life, Bernhard Callebaut Mar 2012

Economy Of Communion: A Sociological Inquiry On A Contemporary Charismatic Inspiration In Economic And Social Life, Bernhard Callebaut

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article tries to answer the question: Is the initiative of Chiara Lubich, called the Economy of Communion (EoC), an example of a “sudden invention” in the field of the economic activity? EoC is an invention with some charismatic aspects produced by a leader who was active most of her life in the religious sphere. Her initiative brought together two functions of society: the economic and the social, symbolically represented by the figures of the entrepreneur and the poor. The article discusses the issue following Max Weber and his analysis of charismatic leadership, as well as other authors working directly …

Globalization And Post-Secularism: Religions And A Universal Common Identity, Pasquale Ferrara Mar 2012

Globalization And Post-Secularism: Religions And A Universal Common Identity, Pasquale Ferrara

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The most celebrated “return” of religion on the international scene has been considered by analysts, scholars, and diplomats mainly as a confirmation on a wider scale of the hypothesis of a “post-secular” era. What is missing, however, is a reflection on the present-day functioning of religions in connection with the systemic analysis of international relations in a phase of global transformation. If world religions are to be taken seriously in the field of international relations, this would require an approach to their role in the international system as a structural element rather than a mere cultural phenomenon with only a …

Truth And Politics: The Loss Of Authoritativeness In Contemporary Politics, Antonio Maria Baggio Mar 2012

Truth And Politics: The Loss Of Authoritativeness In Contemporary Politics, Antonio Maria Baggio

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article deals with an aspect of the contemporary political crisis in Western countries, namely, the sharpening conflict between politics and truth, a problem interwoven with the progressive loss of authoritativeness in contemporary politics. The risk of reducing truth to opinion is to be expected in a merely procedural interpretation of democracy, obscuring the element of shared truth that lies at the origin of every political community. The expansion of power to the detriment of authority contributes ultimately to forgetting the original truth, that should instead be refocused and brought up-to-date in order to give a sense of direction once …

Towards An Understanding Of The Human Person According To The Mystical Experience Of Chiara Lubich In The Paradise Of ’49, Callan Slipper Mar 2012

Towards An Understanding Of The Human Person According To The Mystical Experience Of Chiara Lubich In The Paradise Of ’49, Callan Slipper

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The category of the person is a pillar of Chiara Lubich’s experience and thought. It is fundamental to the philosophical and theological anthropology at the basis of the culture that, in its various expressions, is in the process of developing from her inspiration. To understand this category, however, it is necessary to see the person in the context of the whole architecture of her thinking. Looking at Lubich’s as yet unpublished notes of the experience of Paradise of ’49, this article attempts an outline of this architecture in four sections. It begins with an overview of created reality in relation …

Editorial Essay: Contextualizing “Paradise ’49” Mar 2012

Editorial Essay: Contextualizing “Paradise ’49”

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This editorial essay is intended to contextualize Chiara Lubich’s 1961 talk about her mystical experiences during the summer of 1949. These experiences marked the beginning of a period of illumination, referred to as “Paradise ’49,” that continued to 1951. Shared in a unique way with her companions, these experiences became foundational for the future life and thought of the Focolare. In order to add contextualization, first this essay places Lubich’s experiences in the history of Christian spirituality based on the scholarship of Piero Coda. Second, through examining letters written by Chiara Lubich, this essay explores the history of her spirituality …
