The Effect Of Automation On Job Opportunities, Tommie Lola Brown Aug 1956

The Effect Of Automation On Job Opportunities, Tommie Lola Brown

All Theses

The intense concern of workers with the effect of automation on jobs began as early as 1912 when an article by Robert Johnstone Wheeler, now a resident of Allentown, Pennsylvania, appeared in the Industrial Review magazine.

Showing the number of hand blowers was dropping steadily as more automatic machines were installed in glass bottle manufacturing plants, Wheeler also described the economic effects of this displacement of workers.

"The automatic machine takes no apprentices," he wrote. "It does not eat or wear anything. It has no wife or children to support."

"Who will buy its products in the coming years when …

Responsibilities Assumed By Some Junior High School Youth In The Purchase And Care Of Their Clothes, Julia M. Levy Aug 1956

Responsibilities Assumed By Some Junior High School Youth In The Purchase And Care Of Their Clothes, Julia M. Levy

All Theses

The desire for distinction and recognition of accomplishment is very human and is expressed in various ways. According to Evans (15:3), one of the most common ways of expressing this desire is through the wearing of clothes. Studies have shown that in normal times, a family of moderate income spends from 12 to 15 percent of its income on clothing. From this total, stated Andrews (1:379, the average twelve-year-old is apportioned approximately 17 percent. Today, after many years of relative insignificance children's clothing has taken an important place in research, and each year the freedom granted the younger generation reaches …

An Economic Study Of Broiler Production In Walker County, Texas, Joseph Lee Miller Aug 1956

An Economic Study Of Broiler Production In Walker County, Texas, Joseph Lee Miller

All Theses

Broiler raising has developed into a highly specialized industry, marked by narrow margins of profit per bird. This does not mean that broilers cannot be raised as a small backyard enterprise as a means of providing experience and occasionally some profit. However, profit is important whenever one is considering the production of broilers as a main enterprise to yield a considerable portion of the farm income. Broilers have been raised in Walker County for six or seven years without any investigation being made as to the economics of their production; what practices can be applied in relation to economic gains; …

It has been assumed that the findings of this study may enable the writer to evaluate in an analytical way the provisions for off-campus student teaching in the field of home economics in some of the leading institutions for Negro …

Social Adjustment Problems Of Six-Year-Old Public School Beginners: An Exploratory Study, George Ethelyn Dykes Aug 1956

Social Adjustment Problems Of Six-Year-Old Public School Beginners: An Exploratory Study, George Ethelyn Dykes

All Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine what problems of school adjustment are common to six-year-olds classified according to socio-economic groups. It is believed that these problems can be determined by an investigation of the following questions: What are the specific adjustment problems of six-year-olds entering public school for the first time?

(1) What are the social adjustment problems of six-year-olds to their peer group? (2) When the pupils are stratified according to socio-economic groups -- high and low -- will their problems be different? If so what are they? (3) When children are classified according to intelligence, what …

All Theses

This study was undertaken to determine the housing needs of homemakers in the patronage area of the Bragg Morris School, Lindale, Texas. It was designed: (1) to learn the needs for space and equipment in the homes by determining the kinds and scope of activities carried on in homes, and the kinds of possessions which required storage, (2) to find out the preferences of the numbers for the locations of activity areas and for some features of construction.

Certain recent influences on present-day trends in home building have been recognized as well as the economic factors involved. The writer planned …
