The Doctrine Of The Naqshabandi Order: A Study Of Mysticism In Islam, Madelain Farah Habib Dec 1966

The Doctrine Of The Naqshabandi Order: A Study Of Mysticism In Islam, Madelain Farah Habib

Dissertations and Theses

The word mysticism in the English language has been corrupted and abused by its difference usages in the various disciplines such as religion, poetry, and philosophy. In Islam the only word which refers to a mystic is a Sufi. Sufism, according to its adherents, is the highest form of human experience, the ultimate reality of God. The Sufi theme is "Know thyself and thou wilt know God."

Sufism has been considered by Sufis and by Orientalists as the ancient school of wisdom, of quietism, of attaining the highest union and of purification of the soul. It embodies the strains of …

De Gaulle And Franco-German Relations, 1945-1965, Mary Ann Shumway Aug 1966

De Gaulle And Franco-German Relations, 1945-1965, Mary Ann Shumway

Dissertations and Theses

The dismemberment and reparations policy France followed at the end of World War II as an occupying power in Germany was a traditional approach of the victor to the vanquished. The Saar, the Ruhr, and the Rhineland were the borderlands long in dispute. One new element was the idea that while demanding these territories, an attempt at national rapprochement could be carried on through educational measures. For many Germans the University at Mainz did not balance the dismantled factories.

This postwar period was characterized by European economic ills. The 1947 Marshall Plan, an American approach to restore Europe to economic …

A Series Of Landscape Studies In Oil Painting And Other Media Exploring And Interpreting Natural Landscape Elelments With Emphasis On The Relationship Between Plastic Space And Visual Space, Eugene Neal Olson Aug 1966

A Series Of Landscape Studies In Oil Painting And Other Media Exploring And Interpreting Natural Landscape Elelments With Emphasis On The Relationship Between Plastic Space And Visual Space, Eugene Neal Olson

Dissertations and Theses

In working with paintings dealing with the interpretation of landscape in oil paint and mixed media during the past year, I have seen new possibilities. This is true both of my approach to landscape painting and of the handling of the painting materials. These studies have led me to a freer handling of paint. In addition, they have led me to be able to make a more universal statement concerning landscape itself rather than only a visual representation of one particular landscape. The first indication that a universal statement about landscape could be achieved became apparent to me while I …

Franz Michael Felder: Bregenzerwälder Dorfgeschichten Und Schriften; Eine Erziehungsstudie, Richard Deal Stones Aug 1966

Franz Michael Felder: Bregenzerwälder Dorfgeschichten Und Schriften; Eine Erziehungsstudie, Richard Deal Stones

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis [written in German] is the first known study to analyze the writings of the Austrian, Franz Michael Felder, as an educative device, which the author himself utilized to enlighten and instruct his country folk in Bregenzerwald, Vorarlberg. An attempt is made to uncover the basic message inherent in all of Felder’s works: close family relationship, high moral standards and diligence are important to him; he fights petty prejudice, meaningless tradition and hypocrisy. The many native customs peculiar to the region are, of course, immanent in his literary production and, what is particularly significant, he stages a continuous battle …

"An Approach To Creative Design" Relation Of Composition To Expression With A Particular Emphasis On Color Relationships., Kay J. Moultrie Jun 1966

"An Approach To Creative Design" Relation Of Composition To Expression With A Particular Emphasis On Color Relationships., Kay J. Moultrie

Dissertations and Theses

The main concentration of study for my project was a series of color studies on canvas in which I explored varying proportions of primary color mixtures, unfamiliar color relationships and value ranges. I was particularly interested in exploring varying proportions of color complementaries in working to achieve neutrals. Through-out my studies I worked for a unity in the sequences of color mixtures. For part of my project I worked with collage materials, which were subordinated to color but released me from pure representational subject matter such as still lifes. After a series of these studies I again returned to representational …

Aspects Of The City, Doris Louise Laird Jun 1966

Aspects Of The City, Doris Louise Laird

Dissertations and Theses

The theme evolved into one aspect of a specific city. Portland, Oregon is famous for its bridges. In actuality, they are the hinges that make it a metropolis instead of two middle-sized urban cities. Thinking along these lines, most sketching was concentrated around these connecting links. Eventually the Broadway, Steel and Hawthorne proved to be the most interesting as to line, pattern, and shape as well as most important in the history of the city. These three were combined into a triptych with a different bridge occupying each panel. The most difficult problem was one of composition – how to …

Mephistopheles - Merck; Ein Vergleich, Richard M. Slawson Jun 1966

Mephistopheles - Merck; Ein Vergleich, Richard M. Slawson

Dissertations and Theses

Johann Heinrich Merck’s life and works, his novelettes, short stories, fables, essays, critical reviews and letters lend themselves to a recognition of parallels between him and Goethe's Mephistopheles - parallels in attitudes and viewpoints, parallels in manners of expression and of handling other people, parallels in their perception of the world around them, and even parallels in their fate. One looks in vain, however, for a serious comparison of these two figures, even though it is well known that many people believe Merck served as the model for Goethe's Mephistopheles. Literary historians and interpreters have discussed the pro and cons …

Unmet Social Work Needs In An Inmate Population Of A County Correctional Institution, Jerry M. Harkins, Melbourne W. Henry, Virginia J. Hodges, Mary Patrick O'Meara, Elisabeth N. Siegel, Donna B. Wilkins

Dissertations and Theses

This descriptive study was designed to elicit the kinds, extensity and intensity of needs of the inmate population of Multnomah County Correctional Institution, a minimum security jail for misdemeanants. A guiding hypothesis asserted that there were unmet needs of prisoners which could be met through social work services both within and outside the institution. Almost the entire population of the institution was interviewed. Open-end and structured responses were recorded on schedules. Five broad areas of need were defined. These were 1) physical needs -- including food, clothing, shelter, and medical care; 2) social needs -- including interpersonal ties, group membership, …

Robert Walser: Ein Beitrag Zum Thema Der Identität (Interpretation Von “Helbling’S Geschichte“), Magdalena M. Hamor Jun 1966

Robert Walser: Ein Beitrag Zum Thema Der Identität (Interpretation Von “Helbling’S Geschichte“), Magdalena M. Hamor

Dissertations and Theses

Except for literary historians and Germanists, Robert Walser (1878-1956), the Swiss poet, was known until recently only to a small circle of readers.

The reason why Robert Walser was “rediscovered” a few years ago and is being read again, is that theme, content and style of his novels – they can be counted on one hand – as well as the several hundred short stories and about four dozen poems , touch upon a constantly more or less urgent problem: man’s ontological inquiry. The unassuming manner of Walser’s fragments and vignettes fascinates and elates the system-weary reader; yet, his lack …

Constructing A Tool For Measuring Common Social Work Activities, Patricia M. Armstrong, James A. Brown, Robert L. Roy, Edward R. Walker, Donald G. Welch May 1966

Constructing A Tool For Measuring Common Social Work Activities, Patricia M. Armstrong, James A. Brown, Robert L. Roy, Edward R. Walker, Donald G. Welch

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is one in a series of studies concerned with the interrelationship of General Systems Theory and social work knowledge. The purpose of this particular study was to develop a questionnaire to test the generic quality of the actions performed among the three traditional specialties of social work -- casework, group work and community organization.

The universe from which the sample of concepts was obtained were the acts performed by people in behalf of others. Specifically, the 421 concepts in the sample were obtained from literature in the fields of social work, sociology, psychology, and counseling and guidance. These …

Marital Interaction Theory: Some Implications For Research, Lucille S. Pugh May 1966

Marital Interaction Theory: Some Implications For Research, Lucille S. Pugh

Dissertations and Theses

This project examines specific basic areas of marital interaction theory. Individual chapters are developed around the following themes: historical development of the theory of interaction; a theoretical discussion of selected concepts; personality as a determinant of interaction; communication in marriage; marital interaction patterns; methodology pertaining to research findings; and finally some implications for research which became apparent as this project developed.

The project lays the conceptual groundwork for a series of empirical studies that will use the interactional approach as a theoretical base. The immediate purpose of this project therefore is to describe the important dimensions of the interactional approach …

A Series Of Paintings, Drawings, And Compositions, Oriented Toward A Fine Arts Direction In The Use Of Synthetic And Mixed Media., Judith Frykman

Dissertations and Theses

The thesis is in the form of a commentary on the development of my work from the beginning of this year. The studies have followed a general pattern of closed to open, or linear to painterly. Numerous changes in attitude towards the basic elements of composition, and their use, have taken place. Among those most frequently mentioned are: line, dark and light, intensity and warm-cool color relationships. In connection with these compositional elements, surface texture, subject matter and various media are discussed. Some consideration is given to conflict between conceptual and media orientations. The effect of this conflict in a …
