As CO2 levels in Earth’s atmosphere and oceans steadily rise, varying organismal responses may produce ecological losers and winners. Increased ocean CO2 can enhance seagrass productivity and thermal tolerance, providing some compensation for climate warming. However, the consistency of this CO2 effect across populations of cosmopolitan species such as Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) remains largely unknown. This study analyzed whole-plant performance metabolic profiles and gene expression patterns of distinct eelgrass populations in response to CO2 enrichment. Cartilage cells (Chondrocytes) grow in rather unique environmental conditions in the human body. Cartilage is avascular tissue and lacks innervation. Its main source of nutrients is derived from the synovial fluid and/or perichondrium. Consequently, these cells must survive and thrive under hypoxic and acidic stressors. Published data suggests that there are a multitude of genes affected from either one of these two stressors or both. Drosophila melanogaster is a dominant model organism for studying the function of animal genes in initial stages of embryogenesis. Usually, images containing Drosophila gene expression patterns are captured at different developmental stages to study the interconnection of animal genes. To achieve most biologically meaningful results, gene expression images from a similar stage should be compared. Currently, biologists manually classify embryos in images into different stages, which is time intensive and infeasible for current massively produced gene expression images. One significant difference between evolved mammalian brains and other species is that mammalian brains exhibit increasingly convoluted structures in the cerebral cortex. Groove and ridge shaped structures named gyri and sulci expand surface area of cerebral cortex, making more functions possible. Cartilage deformities within the human chest wall, specifically pectus excavatum (PE) and pectus carinatum (PC) are common (1/400-1/1000) and yet, despite their clinical significance, are some of the least studied disorders pertaining to cartilage [1]. The costal cartilage connecting "false ribs" 8-10 to the sternum is often abnormally grown and can lead to formation of a severely sunken "funnel" chest (PE) or push outwards to form a "pigeon" chest (PC). Green fluorescent protein (GFP) was first identified in the jellyfish Aequorea victoria and generated interest due to its ability to noninvasively tag and visualize cells, cellular structures, and cellular proteins. Furthermore, the expression of green fluorescent protein in Esherichia coli cells as a tool for reporting gene expression and promotor activity has become important in the understanding of gene regulation. Expression of the gfp gene was found to vary depending on the strain of E. coli possessing the gfp gene. Using the human placental choriocarcinoma JEG-3 cell line as an in vitro human placental model, we studied the mechanisms of the PKA positive regulation of the hGnRH gene expression in the human placenta. Studies in JEG3 cells showed that through the PKA catalytic subunit a, human GnRH upstream promoter activity was stimulated by PKA signaling pathway in a cAMP dependent mechanism. The sequence between —202 (Afl II) and —554 (BamH I) base pair in the human GnRH upstream promoter region appeared to be responsible for the PKA positive regulation of the gene expression. Deregulation of a set of critical cellular genes has long been speculated as a cause of the oncogenic transformation induced by v-Jun oncoprotein. In the past several years, extensive efforts have been made to identify such genes. Several target genes have been identified that are specifically associated with the v-Jun induced transformation phenotype in chicken embryo fibroblasts (CEF).

Using the human placental choriocarcinoma JEG-3 cell line as an in vitro human placental model, I studied the mechanisms of the tissue-specific expression and steroid hormone regulation of the hGnRH gene in the human placenta. The results showed that all of the previously identified four elements are required for the full activity of the hGnRH upstream promoter in JEG-3 cells, while the element 4 (FP4, −987/−968) is the most important. Studies performed with 5′ end deletion of this region confirmed these observations. Further, supershift assay using Oct-1 antibody demonstrated the involvement of Oct-1 in the FP4 DNA-protein interaction in JEG-3 …
