An Assessment Of The Utilization Of Permanent And Temporary Classrooms As It Relates To Cost And Efficiency In Selected School Divisions, E. Carlton Bowyer

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

In the mid-1900s there were over eighty thousand public school buildings in the United States housing approximately thirty-nine million pupils. Many were constructed thirty or forty years earlier and have approached the end of their useful life without requiring major retrofitting or replacement. Rising construction costs prompt school systems to investigate alternative means of housing rapidly growing student populations. This study traced the historical background of the school facility and the development of school construction relative to the function of education.

The focus of this study was to ascertain the current use of temporary and permanent housing in the fifty …

A Comparative Analysis Of Pediatric And General Hospital Nurse Recruitment Practices, Rebecca Parsons Scott Oct 1990

A Comparative Analysis Of Pediatric And General Hospital Nurse Recruitment Practices, Rebecca Parsons Scott

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The focus of this study is a comparison of the National Association of Health Care Recruiter's annual recruitment survey with a duplicate survey that was sent to pediatriconly acute care hospitals. The goal was to determine differences between the recruitment and retention statistics found in all hospitals compared to those found in pediatriconly hospitals. Also, a major consideration was to find correlations among the variables in nurse recruitment and retention that might lead to a better understanding of what influences the recruitment budgeting process and how recruitment dollars might be spent most efficiently.

There was no significant difference found between …

Activation In Vitro Of Transfer Rna-Guanine Ribosyltransferase By Protein Kinase C, Panayota Eriotou Oct 1990

Activation In Vitro Of Transfer Rna-Guanine Ribosyltransferase By Protein Kinase C, Panayota Eriotou

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to isolate and purify the enzymes, transfer RNA-guanine ribosyltrasferase and protein kinase C, and to determine whether the phosphorylating enzyme activates the insertion enzyme in vitro. Transfer RNA-guanine ribosyltransferase lost activity within several days after isolation and total, complete reactivation was accomplished in the presence of protein kinase C. This demonstrated that ribosyltransferase's instability is related to the degree of its phosphorylation. It is proposed that modification of tRNA is controlled by protein kinase C. Deactivation of the insertion enzyme leads to hypomodified tRNA which in turn is associated with neoplasia. Potential use …

Hydrogeology And Water Budget Analysis Of Two Interdunal Ponds Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve, Dare County, North Carolina, Richard A. Hisert Oct 1990

Hydrogeology And Water Budget Analysis Of Two Interdunal Ponds Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve, Dare County, North Carolina, Richard A. Hisert

OES Theses and Dissertations

Ground-water-fed interdunal ponds in Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve lose as much as 7600 m3 yr-1 of water through evaporation. This withdrawal of groundwater is sufficient to significantly alter flow patterns through the surficial aquifer on Bodie Island, N.C. Statistical analyses of evaporation estimates derived by various methods indicate a weak correlation, (r2=0.4-0.5) between pan evaporation data from Aurora, N.C. and pond evaporation at Nags Head Woods calculated by water budget analyses.

Results of stratigraphic and pedologic analyses in and around the ponds indicate that the ponds formed after development of multiple generations of dunes. This …

Trace Metals And Pyrite In Sediments Of Chesapeake Bay, Robert S. Kluckhohn Oct 1990

Trace Metals And Pyrite In Sediments Of Chesapeake Bay, Robert S. Kluckhohn

OES Theses and Dissertations

The formation and cycling of iron sulfides within anoxic sediments can affect the cycling of trace metals. The sediments at station CB-27 (near Annapolis, Maryland) in Chesapeake Bay were rich in FeS (39% of TS), low in greigite (3.6% of TS), and has a relatively constant pyrite concentration (50 - 60% of TS) with depth. The percent composition of total metals in pyrite were 25.7% cu, 11.8% Zn, 15.8% Fe, and non-detectable to 2.1% Cd. At Station CB- 28 (near the Choptank River), the sediments were low in FeS (1.7% of TS), richer in greigite (up to 14% of TS), …

Root Biomass And Production In Four Communities Within The Great Dismal Swamp, Susan West Powell Oct 1990

Root Biomass And Production In Four Communities Within The Great Dismal Swamp, Susan West Powell

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A biomass difference approach was used to measure biomass and production over eleven months in four different communities within the Great Dismal Swamp. On all sites, fine roots were the moat dynamic root component. Both biomass and production were highest on the mixed hardwood site, the least flooded site, and second highest on the cedar site, the site with the longest duration of saturation. The maple-gum and cypress sites had lower amounts of biomass and rates of production. Environmental parameters that influenced production included frequency and duration of flooding, density of the stand, and soil type.

A second method, an …

The Effects Of Two Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Benzo[A]Pyrene And Naphthalene On Reproductive Success Embryological Development Larval Physiology And Mortality Of The Mud Crab Rhithropanopeus Harisii (Gould), Gregory V. White

OES Theses and Dissertations

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as naphthalene (Nap) and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) are common in the water column and sediments of estuarine and coastal areas. The mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii was exposed to varying concentrations of Nap or B[a]P to determine the effects on reproductive success, embryological development, larval physiology and mortality. Nap and B[a]P decreased hatching success and prolonged embryological development. Both pollutants produced high abnormality frequencies for egg exposed larvae. Molt frequency and respiratory rates of larvae from non-exposed eggs were more chronically affected by these pollutants than were egg exposed larvae. The EC50 concentrations were determined for …

Integrated Control Of Thermally Distorted Large Space Antennas, Robert H. Tolson Oct 1990

Integrated Control Of Thermally Distorted Large Space Antennas, Robert H. Tolson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Studies on controlling the thermal distortion of large space antennae have generally investigated a single orbital position and have optimized actuator locations based on minimizing the RMS surface deviation from the original parabolic shape. One study showed the benefits of directly using far zone electric field characteristics as the performance measure; but, this approach resulted in a nonlinear programming problem. The objective of the current study is to develop an approach to designing a control system that (1) recognizes the time dependence of the distortion and (2) controls variables that are directly related to far field performance in a quadratic …

The Modeling Of The Interactions Of Pellets With Magnetic Fusion Plasmas For Alpha Particle Diagnostics, Abdel-Ghafar Mahmood El-Cashlan Oct 1990

The Modeling Of The Interactions Of Pellets With Magnetic Fusion Plasmas For Alpha Particle Diagnostics, Abdel-Ghafar Mahmood El-Cashlan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A model for the interactions of hydrogen and carbon pellets with thermonuclear fusion plasmas has been developed and solved to determine the charge-state spatial distributions in the ablation cloud surrounding the pellet. The ionization is treated in a self-consistent manner in the energy balance and the collisional radiative (CR) model is used to calculate the ionization levels. External plasma electron effects on ionization are included. The electron heat flux is modeled as a multigroup distribution. The channelling of the flow along the field line is treated phenomenologically by restricting the cross-sectional area of the flow. The predictions of the model …

Effects Of Applied Soil Repellent Finish On Pesticide Residues In Work Clothing, Sandra L. Prior Aug 1990

Effects Of Applied Soil Repellent Finish On Pesticide Residues In Work Clothing, Sandra L. Prior

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the feasibility of using an applied soil repellent finish, Scotchgard, on 100% cotton denim fabric in order to enhance the removal of atrazine and alachlor residue during the laundering process. The experimental findings provided no statistically significant evidence that Scotchgard fabric protector reduced pesticide residuals on the 100% cotton denim fabric either before or after laundering. A significant finding secondary to the study involved the possible interaction of Scotchgard with the pesticide alachlor, leaving greater amounts of residual on the fabric after laundering than those found with no fabric treatment. This suggests that agricultural workers be cautioned …

The Hydrogeology And Leachate Generation Of An Alum Sludge Lagoon Chesapeake Virginia, Charles M. Darling Aug 1990

The Hydrogeology And Leachate Generation Of An Alum Sludge Lagoon Chesapeake Virginia, Charles M. Darling

OES Theses and Dissertations

In 1986 the City of Chesapeake, Virginia began to dig shallow ponds ("lagoons") to contain alum sludge, a waste generated by the City from the process of treating potable water. Borings at the disposal site reveal that the near-surface geologic units include a thin mud-rich facies which overlies a thick sandy facies, both of which are in the Lynnhaven Member of the Tabb Formation. At 7 meters depth, a clay-rich facies of the Yorktown Formation (Morgarts Beach Member?) underlies the sandy water table aquifer. Water levels from twenty observation wells and two monitoring wells installed into the water table aquifer …

Effects Of Chemical Aneuploidogens On Taxol Purified Drosophila And Mouse Brain Microtubules Polymerization And Depolymerization In Vitro, Anil Sehgal

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The effects of aneuploidogens (aneuploidy causing agents) on taxol-purified microtubules from Drosophila and mouse brain in vitro were studied by using a spectrophotometric assay and electron microscopy. Colchicine, acetonitrile, propionitrile, acrylonitrile, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), griseofulvin and cadmium chloride inhibited microtubule polymerization whereas methoxyethyl acetate (MEA) and methyl mercuric chloride (MMC) did not. All aneuploidogens tested (at 50mM) resulted in reduced rate of elongation of mouse brain microtubules. MMC, cadmium chloride and DMSO resulted in increased rates of Drosophila microtubule elongation whereas the rest of the drugs resulted in decreases. The in vitro results from Drosophila correlate well with the previously …

The permeability of oxygen through polycrystalline silver was found to be quite linear and quite repeatable. The diffusivity measurements were found to exhibit two distinct linear regions, one above …

The Role Of Longshore Sediment Transport In The Loss Of Fill Material From An Estuarine Groin System, R. Neville Reynolds Jul 1990

The Role Of Longshore Sediment Transport In The Loss Of Fill Material From An Estuarine Groin System, R. Neville Reynolds

OES Theses and Dissertations

The influence of shoreline structures on longshore sediment transport and the evolution of a stable beach planform was investigated at Willoughby Spit, Virginia following the placement of 410,590 cubic meters of beach fill within a groin system. Shoreline changes and wave conditions in a single groin compartment, and the growth rate of a downdrift terminal spit were monitored during 1985 and 1986. Short term fluctuations in the shoreline position within the groin compartment suggested an episodic westerly movement of sediment through the groin system. Primary sediment moving events were associated with northerly winds which produced waves up to 50 cm …

Evidence Of A Neurogenic Component During Ige-Mediated Inflammation In Murine Skin, Victoria Jean Cavanaugh Jul 1990

Evidence Of A Neurogenic Component During Ige-Mediated Inflammation In Murine Skin, Victoria Jean Cavanaugh

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The direct stimulation of sensory nerves or the intradermal injection of neuropeptides triggers a cutaneous inflammatory response that involves the degranulation of mast cells. These neurogenic inflammatory reactions are physiologically similar to IgE-mediated hypersensitivity responses, which also depend on mast cells. Although non-antigenic stimuli distinguish neurogenic from IgE-mediated inflammation, the similarity of their effector stages suggested that peripheral nerves may also participate in lgE-mediated responses. To examine this hypothesis, IgE responses were elicited in denervated skin. A murine model was developed where the footpad was denervated by surgically removing a 2 mm segment of the sciatic nerve, proximal to the …

Hemispheric Effects Of Verbal Information Processing On Single And Dual Task Performance, Gwendolyn Lorell Pearson Jul 1990

Hemispheric Effects Of Verbal Information Processing On Single And Dual Task Performance, Gwendolyn Lorell Pearson

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Several theories have been proposed to predict performance when operators time share tasks. The Hemispheres as Resources Model suggests tasks will be performed efficiently together if each hemisphere allocates resources to one task. The Task Hemispheric Integrity Principle predicts the best dual task performance will be found when the shortest processing route is maintained. The purpose of the present study was to test the single and dual task performance predictions of these two models. The concurrent performance of two verbal tasks was used to compare the importance of ear of attention, hemisphere of processing, response hand and gender on task …
