Self-Monitoring Checklists: A Tool For Connecting Training To Practice, M. Courtney Hughes, Emaley B. Mcculloch, Elise G. Valdes
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
A limitation of training is the gap between the knowledge learned in training and the behavior put into practice. Skills checklists are helpful for reducing errors and increasing adherence to safety and may be one tool useful for bridging that gap. There is little research examining the role of skills checklists with self-reflection completed independently, or “self-monitoring checklists,” for increasing knowledge and improving skills in areas requiring attentional behavior in healthcare. Two randomized controlled studies incorporated self-monitoring checklists along with online training in cultural competence and integrated care, respectively, for health professionals. At least ninety percent of participants in both …

Exercise Intensities As Factors Of Metabolic Outcomes In Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review., Elizabeth A. Moxley, Tory Bugaieski
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
Exercise is effective to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes, although currently underutilized. This review analyzes the metabolic response to exercise performance at various intensities in individuals with type 2 diabetes. These findings provide insight into the development of safe and efficacious exercise prescriptions and education. We conducted a systemic review of the literature to examine the association of various exercise protocols with metabolic outcomes in type 2 diabetes. Between 1984 and 2018, 29 studies were categorized per exercise mode and intensity levels according to the American College of Sports Medicine standards. The most consistent improvement was found in HbA1c …

Micro-Bunching For Generating Tunable Narrow-Band Thz Radiation At The Fast Photoinjector, J. Hyun, P. Piot, T. Sen
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
This paper presents expected THz radiation spectra emitted by micro-bunched electron beams produced using a slit-mask placed within a magnetic chicane in the FAST (Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology) electron injector at Fermilab. Our purpose is to generate tunable narrow-band THz radiation with a simple scheme in a conventional photo-injector. Using the slit-mask in the chicane, we create a longitudinally micro-bunched beam after the chicane by transversely slicing an energy chirped electron bunch at a location with horizontal dispersion. In this paper, we discuss the theory related to the micro-bunched beam structure, the beam optics, the simulation results of the …

The Impact Of Insider Trading On The Market Price Of Securities: Some Evidence From Recent Cases Of Unlawful Trading, David Rosenfeld
The Impact Of Insider Trading On The Market Price Of Securities: Some Evidence From Recent Cases Of Unlawful Trading, David Rosenfeld
College of Law Faculty Publications
The government's recent crackdown on insider trading has revived an old debate about the wisdom of insider trading prohibitions. Opponents of insider trading laws often argue that insider trading contributes to market efficiency because it brings information to the market which gets incorporated into the price of the security, leading to more accurate pricing in a more timely fashion. Although this argument is intuitively appealing and has some empirical support, a look at some recent cases of known insider trading reveals situations where the market fails to detect the presence of informed traders, and even instances where the stock price …

Lost In Translation: Persons With Limited English Proficiency And Police Interaction In The United States, Anastasia Coppersmith
Northern Illinois Law Review Supplement
This article explores United States jurisprudence of the constitutionality of language rights as it correlates to communications between law enforcement officials and non-English speaking persons in emergency situations. The judicial and legislative bodies provide protections to limited English speaking minorities in the realms of education, healthcare, and when navigating through the United States court system. However, these protections are not extended to include interactions between language-minority citizens and initial police interactions during emergency situations.
Application Of High-Frequency Impedancemetry Approach In Measuring The Deposition Velocities Of Biomass And Sand Slurry Flows In Pipelines, Mahdi Vaezi, Shubham Verma, Amit Kumar
Application Of High-Frequency Impedancemetry Approach In Measuring The Deposition Velocities Of Biomass And Sand Slurry Flows In Pipelines, Mahdi Vaezi, Shubham Verma, Amit Kumar
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
Since the lower limit to operating velocities in slurry transport systems is influenced by deposition conditions, measuring the ″deposition velocity″ is an essential step in slurry pipelines’ design and operation. This study proposes a new experimental technique in measuring deposition velocities in slurry pipeline transport called the high-frequency impedancemetry approach. This non-invasive technique of measuring electrical properties of substances, based on their frequency-dependent behavior, was applied using a 16-electrode impedancemetry device on a 25 m long closed-circuit pipeline to measure the deposition velocities of sand- and biomass-water mixture flows. Slurries of play and gravel sands, as well as wheat straw …
Contact Juggling Of A Disk With A Disk-Shaped Manipulator, Ji-Chul Ryu, Kevin M. Lynch
Contact Juggling Of A Disk With A Disk-Shaped Manipulator, Ji-Chul Ryu, Kevin M. Lynch
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
In this paper, we present a feedback controller that enables contact juggling manipulation of a disk with a disk-shaped manipulator, called the mobile disk-on-disk. The system consists of two disks in which the upper disk (object) is free to roll on the lower disk (hand) under the influence of gravity. The hand moves with a full three degrees of freedom in a vertical plane. The proposed controller drives the object to follow a desired trajectory through rolling interaction with the hand. Based on the mathematical model of the system, dynamic feedback linearization is used in the design of the controller. …

Unnatural Voluntary Parentage Acknowledgments Under The 2017 Uniform Parentage Act, Jeffrey A. Parness
Unnatural Voluntary Parentage Acknowledgments Under The 2017 Uniform Parentage Act, Jeffrey A. Parness
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
The 2017 Uniform Parentage Act expands the opportunities for formal parentage establishments via voluntary acknowledgements (VAPs) by intended parents with no natural ties to their acknowledged children. This constitutes a significant departure from earlier UPAs which limited VAPs to acknowledging parents with actual or alleged natural ties, which were in line with the approach to VAPs under the federal Social Security Act since the mid-1990s and with most American state statutes on VAPs. This article urges that the UPA continue to recognize VAPs only where acknowledgements by non-birth mothers include pronouncements of actual or alleged natural ties. It agrees VAPs …

Presuit Discovery And Evidence Preservation In Illinois Circuit Courts, Jeffrey A. Parness, Jessica Theodoratos
Presuit Discovery And Evidence Preservation In Illinois Circuit Courts, Jeffrey A. Parness, Jessica Theodoratos
College of Law Faculty Publications
Once a civil action has been commenced in an Illinois Circuit Court, lawyers and their clients who are parties must preserve evidence relevant to the pending claims. Under Professional Conduct Rule (RPC) 8.4(d), lawyers may not "engage in conduct that is prejudicial to the administration of justice." Under RPC 8.4(a), a lawyer must not assist or induce others to engage in such conduct. Further, RPC 3.4(a) demands that a lawyer not act in ways that "unlawfully obstruct another party's access to evidence or unlawfully alter, destroy or conceal a document or other material having potential evidentiary value."

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
This paper is a summary of the work I did under Heather Herakovich for her research project "Grassland bird response to bison and prairie vegetation restoration." A short data analysis of parasitism of the field sparrow by brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) showed that parasitism was lower in the presence of bison than without and distance from hard edges of sites was insignificant to the rate of parasitism.

While language differences by gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES) have been identified, the domain of pragmatics, specifically, communicative functions (CF) has been understudied. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate mothers’ CF use with African American, European American, and Latino American boys and girls of middle and low SES. CFs were coded from each dyads’ (N=95) learning and play interaction from the National Center for Early Development and Learning’s (NCEDL, 2005) study of Family and Social Environments (Aikens, Coleman, & Bryant, 2008). Demographic factors were correlated with talkativeness, and Directing and Mother Directing, Responding, and Projecting were …

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes is a serious health problem affecting approximately 29.1 million individuals in the United States. Another 86 million have prediabetes. The development and implementation of lifestyle modifications such as physical activity for these persons are among the most effective methods for prevention and treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine relationships between glycemic control (HbA1c) and cardiovascular fitness (peak maximal oxygen uptake [VO2 peak] and ventilatory threshold [VT]) in overweight/obese subjects with and without type 2 diabetes (T2DM). In addition, the influences of body mass index (BMI) and insulin sensitivity (homeostasis model assessment [HOMA %S]) on …

On June 9, 2017, Illinois's Bail Reform Act of 2017 was signed into law by Governor Bruce Rauner. Among other important provisions, the Act creates a presumption that non-monetary release conditions will be granted for defendants, requires that a defendant be provided an attorney for bail determination hearings, provides a bail credit for certain offenses, and authorizes the Illinois Supreme Court to create a non-discriminatory statewide risk assessment tool that could be used to make bail determinations. Despite the crucial improvements to Illinois's bail system achieved through the Act, some advocates argue that further reforms are still needed to protect …

Simulations Of Beam Optics And Bremsstrahlung For High Intensity And Brightness Channeling Radiation, J. Hyun, P. Piot, T. Sen
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
This paper presents X-ray spectra of channeling radiation expected at the FAST (Fermi Accelerator Science andTechnology) facility in Fermilab. Our purpose is to produce high brightness quasi-monochromatic X-rays in anenergy range from 40 keV to 110 keV. We will use a diamond crystal and low emittance electrons with an energyof around 43 MeV. The quality of emitted X-rays depends on parameters of the electron beam at the crystal. We present simulations of the beam optics for high brightness and high yield operations for a range of bunchcharges. We estimate the X-ray spectra including bremsstrahlung background. We discuss how the electron beamdistributions …
