`The Very Beautiful Principles Of Natural Philosophy': Michael Faraday, Paper Marbling And The Physics Of Natural Forms, Robert Pepperell Jun 2024

`The Very Beautiful Principles Of Natural Philosophy': Michael Faraday, Paper Marbling And The Physics Of Natural Forms, Robert Pepperell

LASER Journal

In 1854, Michael Faraday wrote to thank the author who had sent him a book on the art of paper marbling. In the letter, Faraday referred to `the very beautiful principles of natural philosophy' involved in the process of dropping ink on thickened water. What are the `beautiful principles' that Faraday referred to, and how are they involved in the art of paper marbling? Here I consider some of the physical processes that occur in paper marbling and how the patterns that emerge represent `dissipative structures' that are governed by fundamental principles of nature, in particular the tendency for physical …

Negative Emotions On Social Media Dominate Gen Z'S Decisions For The 2024 Election, Yi Luo, Jin-A Choi, Bond Benton May 2024

Negative Emotions On Social Media Dominate Gen Z'S Decisions For The 2024 Election, Yi Luo, Jin-A Choi, Bond Benton

School of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works

The demographics of Gen Z have positioned it to potentially have the greatest impact of any emerging generation in the upcoming election. As this generation consumes social media at a rate higher than any other generation, evaluation of the themes and tone surrounding the election in social media is particularly important for understanding Gen Z and politics. Results show election themes and issues in social media reveal negative emotional sentiment (77%) online is more than double the amount of positive sentiment, with “sadness, disgust, fear, anger” far outpacing optimistic sentiment such as “joy.”

Building Capacity And Agency In Emergency Shelters In Paterson, Nj, Fanny Lauby

Department of Political Science and Law Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper outlines a consistent issue with Paterson City’s communication across departments, resulting in a lack of accessible data at multiple levels and a reduced knowledge among social workers and program coordinators. These citywide issues have contributed to a culture of confusion. The city of Paterson is improperly pursuing the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s “Housing First” approach, resulting in a relative lack of housing programs - constituting a matter of long-term concern for the city.

Addressing Youth Cannabis Poisonings In Paterson, Nj, Fanny Lauby

Department of Political Science and Law Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This report has found that various local stores within the city of Paterson have been packaging and displaying cannabis items in a similar fashion to candies popular with children, thus leading to instances of children purchasing these items and consuming them. This highlights issues surrounding enforcement of various New Jersey statutes regulating the distribution of cannabis items to those under the age of 21. This negligence at the hands of store owners has helped contribute to the increase of cannabis poisonings due to being so easily accessible by children. The increased normalization of cannabis uses with its legalization and the …

Art And Math Via Cubic Polynomials, Polynomiography And Modulus Visualization, Bahman Kalantari Apr 2024

Art And Math Via Cubic Polynomials, Polynomiography And Modulus Visualization, Bahman Kalantari

LASER Journal

Throughout history, both quadratic and cubic polynomials have been rich sources for the discovery and development of deep mathematical properties, concepts, and algorithms. In this article, we explore both classical and modern findings concerning three key attributes of polynomials: roots, fixed points, and modulus. Not only do these concepts lead to fertile ground for exploring sophisticated mathematics and engaging educational tools, but they also serve as artistic activities. By utilizing innovative practices like polynomiography—visualizations associated with polynomial root finding methods—as well as visualizations based on polynomial modulus properties, we argue that individuals can unlock their creative potential. From crafting captivating …

Community-Linked Field Experience Pilot, Mia Palombo Apr 2024

Community-Linked Field Experience Pilot, Mia Palombo

Student Research Symposium

This IRB-approved study explores the possibilities of a teacher education program engaged with and rooted in the community. The project follows a partnership between a university and a community organization whose mission is to meet the needs of k-12 multilingual students. Pre-service teachers complete their field experience in an innovative community-based setting, and receive mentoring from a teacher on staff focused on developing skills and understanding how learning is nurtured outside traditional classroom settings. This partnership serves a dual purpose, meeting the needs of the community organization and those of pre-service interns who have demands on their time, which make …

Developing 240 Spanish Word Pair Stimuli For A Psycholinguistic Experiment, Francisco Villa Apr 2024

Developing 240 Spanish Word Pair Stimuli For A Psycholinguistic Experiment, Francisco Villa

Student Research Symposium

Metaphors are linguistically interesting because they involve going beyond literal interpretation. For example, “night owl” can refer to an animal or a person who is active at night. Psycholinguistic researchers investigating metaphor comprehension must develop sets of stimuli (linguistic items used in experiments) that include metaphors and literal items as a baseline. One approach is to use metaphorical word pairs, because it lets researchers control several important variables, including how frequent words are within the language. For the first time, we have created a set of word pair stimuli in Spanish, which is particularly challenging because most metaphors consist of …

Indigenous Communities Are Disproportionately Burdened By Environmental Contamination, Rae Cade, Danlin Yu, Kyle Whyte, Pankaj Lal, Cortni Borgerson Apr 2024

Indigenous Communities Are Disproportionately Burdened By Environmental Contamination, Rae Cade, Danlin Yu, Kyle Whyte, Pankaj Lal, Cortni Borgerson

Student Research Symposium

Indigenous populations are disproportionately affected by both environmental pollution and health disparities resulting in mortality rates 60% higher than their white counterparts. Previous research has revealed instances of pollution from facilities which have caused severe health issues in Indigenous communities. Despite this, widespread geographic studies of the spatial correlation between Environmental Justice (EJ) and Indigenous populations remain lacking. This chapter examines whether Indigenous people in the northeastern United States are inequitably burdened by contamination. I find that Indigenous people are disproportionately exposed to 21 superfund contaminants, regardless of state or federal recognition. The sources of these contaminants varied, ranging from …

Global Analysis Of Human Population Density And Blue Carbon Stocks In Mangrove Soils, Shih-Chieh Chien, Charles Knoble, Jennifer Adams Krumins Apr 2024

Global Analysis Of Human Population Density And Blue Carbon Stocks In Mangrove Soils, Shih-Chieh Chien, Charles Knoble, Jennifer Adams Krumins

Student Research Symposium

Recent research highlights the decline in blue carbon within mangrove ecosystems due to anthropogenic pressures. We investigate the impact of human population density on soil carbon stocks in urban mangrove forests to assess their contribution to the global carbon budget. Conducting a global analysis, we compile mangrove soil carbon data and calculate population density using European Commission records. Findings reveal a negative correlation between population density and mangrove soil carbon stocks. Specifically, when population density exceeds 300 people km−2, soil carbon decreases by 37% compared to isolated mangrove forests. However, accounting for climatic variables diminishes this negative relationship, rendering it …

The Epidemic Of Fast Fashion: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Harmful Consumer Behavior And The Exploitation Of Children In The Fashion Industry, Maya Trajanosk Apr 2024

The Epidemic Of Fast Fashion: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Harmful Consumer Behavior And The Exploitation Of Children In The Fashion Industry, Maya Trajanosk

Student Research Symposium

The overconsumption of clothing by consumers has resulted in the growth of child labor exploitation. Child exploitation has severe adverse consequences not only for the children and families affected but also for society in general. With the surge of “fast fashion”, to what extent do U.S. federal child labor laws and harmful consumer behavior contribute to the exploitation of children working in the fashion industry? What can be done to reduce or eliminate this growth in child exploitation? How does overconsumption of fast fashion harm society This is a complex problem that requires interdisciplinary research and analysis to achieve a …
