The Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Neutron-Induced Defects In Silicon P-N Junctions, Paul Edward Johnson Jan 1972

The Electric Field Strength Dependence Of Neutron-Induced Defects In Silicon P-N Junctions, Paul Edward Johnson

Masters Theses

"The effect of high electric field strengths (10⁴ to 10⁵ V/cm) present during neutron radiation on the neutron-induced defects is determined by utilizing the high electric field strength inherent in the emitter-base transistion region of an n-p-n transistor. A method is presented for the separation of neutron and gamma effects. Previous theoretical work on the ratio of base current increase to collector current decrease is applied to experimental data. The variations of the space-charge region volume damage introduction rate with neutron fluence and the average electric field strength are determined experimentally in order to obtain a measure of this effect. …

Computer Simulation Of The Primary Recoil Spectra And Damage Cross Section Of Fe₃Al Using Endf/B Ii Data, Daniel Willard Smith

Masters Theses

"A computer program, using Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF/B II) information, was used to develop energy-exchange kernels which delineate the energy transfer probabilities between neutrons and Fe3Al lattice atoms. The kernels combine all available information on elastic and inelastic scattering contained in the ENDF/B II data.

The computer program used to generate the primary recoil spectra is SAKI, a modified version of RICE (1). SAKI is designed to calculate energy-exchange probabilities in any binary alloy as well as damage cross sections and optimum cutoff energies for use in comparing displacement effects in different reactor spectra."--Abstract, page ii.

A Mass Spectrometric Characterization Of Positive Ions Created In Simple Vacuum Diodes Incorporating Oxide Cathodes With Supplementary Analysis Of Background Gases, Larry A. Addington

Masters Theses

"Simple diodes were constructed utilizing oxide cathodes and nickel anodes. The cathodes were obtained by applying a mixture of barium, strontium, and calcium carbonates to a nickel filament and decomposing them to yield the oxides. The products of decomposition were analyzed by monitoring the composition of the background gases in the vacuum chamber. A portion of the flux of positive ions bombarding the cathode during diode operation was analyzed. It was possible to determine the region of origin of the ions and their potential energy at the time of formation. Positive ions of chlorine, fluorine, sodium, potassium, and rubidium were …

The Effects Of Intense Sound Levels And Steady Flow On The Propagation Of Plane-Waves In Air, Wuu Hao Jan 1972

The Effects Of Intense Sound Levels And Steady Flow On The Propagation Of Plane-Waves In Air, Wuu Hao

Masters Theses

"This thesis is a theoretical investigation of the effects of intense sound levels and steady flow on the propagation of plane-waves in tubes of constant diameter. The analysis is limited to a study of the change of wave profile due to the intense sound levels, and steady flow. However, corrections for effects of viscous and heat conduction losses at tube walls are also presented. To simplify the analysis, the problem is treated by considering the steady flow and finite-amplitude-sound wave effects separately. For finite-amplitude sound only, two approaches are evaluated. The first uses small perturbations to derive a finite-amplitude wave …

Application Of Transmission Matrices To Describe Transverse Vibrations Of Non-Uniform Bernoulli-Euler Beams, Dean Irle Parker

Masters Theses

"This report investigates the application of transmission Matrices to determine natural frequencies of non-uniform Bernoulli-Euler beams. The classes of non-uniform beams considered includes: truncated wedges, truncated cones, and truncated rectangular pyramids. Two transmission matrices were derived from solutions to the Bernoulli-Euler equation. One was an exact closed form solution which was applicable for the above classes of beams excluding uniform and nearly uniform beams. The second solution was an approximate one limited to the use for nearly uniform beams, but which does give the correct solution to the uniform beam in the limiting case. The transmission matrix has two advantages: …

Design And Construction Of A Drop Generator For Use In A Vertical Wind Tunnel, Danny Ray Conner Jan 1972

Design And Construction Of A Drop Generator For Use In A Vertical Wind Tunnel, Danny Ray Conner

Masters Theses

"A drop generator, based on the principle of a vibrating capillary, was designed and built for use in the UMR vertical atmosphere wind tunnel. The drop generator worked very well on a test stand where it was firmly supported, but was not consistent when tested in the wind tunnel. Vibration of the wind tunnel walls and a slight turbulence near the forward edge of the generator caused an oscillation in the position of the stream of drops. The oscillation resulted in some of the drops hitting the edge of the collector cup, where the drops would accumulate until a large …

All analyses were obtained by chromatographic techniques. The results of these experiments show that membranes …

An Accurate Digital Instrument To Measure Reactor Period, Ernest Wayne Scott Jan 1972

An Accurate Digital Instrument To Measure Reactor Period, Ernest Wayne Scott

Masters Theses

"At facilities having a research-training reactor, such as the University of Missouri-Rolla Reactor (UMRR), one finds it necessary to perform a large number of rod calibrations during the course of the year. In practice rod worths are determined by measuring the reactor period created by an incremental withdrawal of the rod under calibration. Period is then related to reactivity thru the use of a publication such as the AEC publication, TID-4500.

This frequent measurement of period makes it desirable to have a simple, automatic and accurate method to make such measurements. At UMRR we have designed, constructed and installed such …

Analysis And Measurement Of A Zener Diode Voltage-Reference, Armond C. Maxeiner Jan 1972

Analysis And Measurement Of A Zener Diode Voltage-Reference, Armond C. Maxeiner

Masters Theses

"Output voltage sensitivity equations are derived for a zener voltage-reference circuit. The circuit consists of a DC-DC converter, a voltage-resistor current generator, and a zener diode. The performance of the voltage-reference is calculated using the sensitivity equations and compared to measurement data taken from a laboratory model of the circuit. The results are in reasonable agreement.

It was concluded that with careful selection of components, two of three major sources of error can be predicted and controlled; these are changes due to input voltage and changes due to temperature. The third, changes due to time, requires calibration against a voltage …

Digital Registration Of Stereo Images Using The Fast Fourier Transform, Victor Francis Wilreker Jr. Jan 1972

Digital Registration Of Stereo Images Using The Fast Fourier Transform, Victor Francis Wilreker Jr.

Masters Theses

"The exact alignment of multispectral imagery is a requirement of any image classification system. This investigation develops a system of programs which result in a technique that corrects for the translational and rotational misalignment of two images. Rotational and translational components are determined by using the fast Fourier transform to find the points of maximum correlation between the two images. The registration of two equal but misaligned boxes is given as an example of how the transform technique is used in correlating the images. The results of registering two digitized images that were obtained by scanning a pair of color …

The Morphology Of The Cellular Precipitation Reaction In A Pb-3.0 Wt% Sn Alloy, Federico Sequeda Osorio

Masters Theses

"The complete development of the cellular precipitation structure at selected grain boundaries in a Pb-3.0 wt% Sn alloy during aging at 34°C and 23°C was investigated by light microscopy. The cellular structure in this alloy consists of lamellae of solute depleted lead solid solution and lamellae of ß tin precipitate. The cellular precipitation reaction begins by local migration of a grain boundary with concomitant grain boundary precipitation of ß tin. The grain boundary bows around the ß tin grain boundary precipitates which then begin to lengthen in the direction of boundary migration thus forming the precipitate lamellae of the cell. …
