Frequency Of Illicit Use Of Prescription Stimulants Is Associated With Perceived Adhd Symptoms, Justin Mendonca

The frequency of illicit use of prescription stimulants (IUPS) was examined in relation to known risk factors. A hierarchical linear regression (N = 903) was used to evaluate self-reported past-year IUPS and demographic variables. Gender (p < .05), race (p < .05), and GPA (p < .01) were significantly associated with the frequency of past-year illicit use. However, Greek organization membership status, perceived ADHD symptoms and access to prescription stimulant medication were not significant individual correlates of past-year IUPS. Additional analyses were conducted on the user subgroup (n = 101) to determine whether these relationships were similar compared to the general sample. Among users, ASRS Inattention and Hyperactivity-Impulsivity Subscale scores were significantly associated with the frequency of past-year IUPS (p < .05), even after accounting for gender, race, and GPA. Interpretations of these findings and implications for future research are discussed.

While Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remains one of the most common psychological disorders diagnosed, current understanding of the disorders expression and factors contributing to impairment in early adulthood remains limited. In an effort to better understand current issues with ADHD assessment and treatment in emerging adults, this study aimed to examine relationships between symptoms, executive function (EF), sleep, and impairment. Overall results of this study indicate that together, ADHD symptoms, EF, and sleep account for a significant proportion of variance in impairment. Racial And Gender Differences In Perceptions Of Illicit Use Of Prescription Stimulants, Kara Lynn Nayfa

Racial/ethnic differences underlying the illicit use of prescription stimulants (IUPS) were examined. A 2 X 2 (African American/Caucasian and male/female) design with n = 120 per group (mean age of 19.23, SD = 1.30) was used to evaluate survey responses regarding IUPS and their ADHD symptoms (using the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale; ASRS). First, African Americans endorsed IUPS less frequently (p < .001) and reported lower levels of ADHD symptoms (p < .01). Second, participants rated three domains of risk for IUPS. African Americans perceived higher social risk (p < .001). No significant differences were found for legal or health risks. Third, African Americans perceived lower benefits for IUPS for concentration (p < .001), alertness (p < .001), and help with studying (p < .001). Minor gender differences are discussed and implications for targeting risk/benefit beliefs in IUPS prevention and treatment programs are discussed.

While Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychological disorders diagnosed during development, adult ADHD remains vastly under recognized and undertreated. In an effort to better understand current issues with adult ADHD assessment, this study examined the relationship between symptoms, impairment, and executive functioning. Results indicate that among individuals who screened negative for ADHD, those higher in executive function reported experiencing significantly less impairment than those lower in executive function. Executive function was shown to have a negative relationship with impairment and ADHD symptomology was shown to have a positive relationship with impairment. This thesis research examines the relation of sleep of children with ADHD and its association with three variables of mother’s sleep. Specifically, we examine specific variables of child sleep including sleep duration, sleep onset, and nightwakings and its relation to mother’s sleep onset, sleep duration, and sleep quality while controlling for child age. After conducting correlations and hierarchal regressions, data analysis indicated a positive association between child sleep onset and mother’s sleep onset, and significant negative relation to mother’s sleep duration and sleep quality. Research shows that religious people have higher levels of self-control. Scientists also hypothesize that individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are less likely to participate in religious services which require long periods of attention and self discipline. However, little research has investigated the potential relationship between ADHD and religious participation. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), this study finds (1) mothers’ prayer frequency is marginally related to children’s ADHD symptoms and diagnosis although other religious indicators are not significantly related, (2) childhood religious involvement and affiliation are not significantly related to ADHD symptoms and diagnosis, …

Educators’ knowledge of and attitudes towards Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) vary. Still, teachers serve a crucial role in the diagnostic and referral processes regarding ADHD in children. Educational videos on ADHD aim to develop or alter viewers’ knowledge and attitudes. This study investigated the impact of two different videos on preservice teacher knowledge, opinions, and referral tendencies for ADHD children. One video was consistent with a medical model, multi-disciplinary approach to understanding ADHD while the other video provided a critical and ultimately negative review of the diagnostic category and its application.
