Maintaining Agronomics, Economics, And Furrow-Irrigation Efficiency In Mid-Southern Usa Soybean Conservation Production Systems, Corey Bryant
Theses and Dissertations
Mid-southern USA soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] producers are being pushed to increase adoption of conservation tillage systems as a means of increasing the application efficiency of gravity flow irrigation systems. This research was conducted to determine whether the efficiency of furrow-irrigation systems could be manipulated through conservation tillage systems while maintaining soybean productivity and profitability. Three experiments were conducted near Stoneville, MS on a Dubbs silt loam (Fine-silty, mixed, active, thermic Typic Hapludalfs) to determine the effects of reducing tillage and increasing ground cover residues on irrigation application efficiency, irrigation water use efficiency, soybean grain yield, and net returns …

The Impact Of Utilizing Peer Mentoring Interactions, New Laboratory Experiments, And Writing-To-Learn Practices In Undergraduate Chemistry Education, Dulani Samarasekara
Theses and Dissertations
High attrition rates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields are major challenges in undergraduate education. Many students enrolled in STEM fields end up switching their majors to non-STEM fields or leave college without earning any academic qualification. Due to these reasons, the United States is facing a critical shortage of future talented STEM personnel in the domestic workforce. Therefore, graduating a sufficient number of talented students in STEM fields has come to national attention. It is important to examine strategies for improving STEM-major retention and undergraduate education in STEM disciplines. The main purpose of this study was to …
Modeling Thermodynamic And Transport Properties Of Soft And Porous Materials, Md Masrul Huda
Modeling Thermodynamic And Transport Properties Of Soft And Porous Materials, Md Masrul Huda
Theses and Dissertations
Molecular simulations are computer experiments that allow us to investigate thermodynamic and transport properties of complex chemical systems. Here, we have investigated self-assembly of organogelators and analysed the diffusion characteristics of small molecules in the nanopores of zeolites. Molecular gels are attractive soft-materials with viscoelastic properties with applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, sensing, etc. Small organic amphiphilic gelators act as a building block of complex 3-dimensional network in molecular gels. Due to time and length scale differences, the understanding and characterization of early stage aggregation of gelators is difficult using experimental techniques. Classical and quantum mechanical approaches have been …
Inferences On The Power-Law Process With Applications To Repairable Systems, Jularat Chumnaul
Inferences On The Power-Law Process With Applications To Repairable Systems, Jularat Chumnaul
Theses and Dissertations
System testing is very time-consuming and costly, especially for complex high-cost and high-reliability systems. For this reason, the number of failures needed for the developmental phase of system testing should be relatively small in general. To assess the reliability growth of a repairable system, the generalized confidence interval and the modified signed log-likelihood ratio test for the scale parameter of the power-law process are studied concerning incomplete failure data. Specifically, some recorded failure times in the early developmental phase of system testing cannot be observed; this circumstance is essential to establish a warranty period or determine a maintenance phase for …

Information Retrieval From Spaceborne Gnss Reflectometry Observations Using Physics- And Learning-Based Techniques, Orhan Eroglu
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation proposes a learning-based, physics-aware soil moisture (SM) retrieval algorithm for NASA’s Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission. The proposed methodology has been built upon the literature review, analyses, and findings from a number of published studies throughout the dissertation research. Namely, a Sig- nals of Opportunity Coherent Bistatic scattering model (SCoBi) has been first developed at MSU and then its simulator has been open-sourced. Simulated GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) analyses have been conducted by using SCoBi. Significant findings have been noted such that (1) Although the dominance of either the coherent reflections or incoher- ent scattering over land is …

We implemented peerocused, active learning, recitation sessions with the large-enrollment sections for General Chemistry I courses at Mississippi State University (MSState) over a period of four semesters beginning in Spring 2016. The peerocused recitation program was a success improving student final (standardized ACS) exam scores, pass/fail rates for the course, and continuation on to General Chemistry II (CH 1223) courses. Peerocused collaborative learning and students possessing ownership over their learning significantly enhanced academic outcomes of our program. Worked-example effect is the best known and apparently the most …
High School Teacher’S Acceptance Of Technology And Privacy Concerns In The 1:1 Initiative Laptop Program, Ronald Gatewood Jr
High School Teacher’S Acceptance Of Technology And Privacy Concerns In The 1:1 Initiative Laptop Program, Ronald Gatewood Jr
Theses and Dissertations
Prior research has shown teachers’ attitudes, teachers’ preparation for using technology, and the availability of technology had significant positive associations with technology integration. However, research has shown that teachers do not fully utilize technology, they fail to implement it thoroughly due to a lack of time needed for planning the implementation of technology into the curriculum, and they do not have adequate training which contributes to underutilization of technology. Due to a lack of research from the teachers’ perspective of technology acceptance, the purpose of this study was to examine high school teachers’ acceptance and use of technology and determine …
Understanding The Effects Of Mass Mortality Events On Plant Communities And Consumer Behavior, Carolina Baruzzi
Understanding The Effects Of Mass Mortality Events On Plant Communities And Consumer Behavior, Carolina Baruzzi
Theses and Dissertations
Mass mortality events (MMEs) are die-offs that result in increased carrion biomass and sometimes the impairment of functional roles. Concurrently, several vulture species are declining. Carrion is a basal resource in ecosystems and its recycling by vultures is considered an ecosystem service. However, the consequences of simultaneously increasing carrion loads and declining vulture populations are unknown. I developed a theoretical framework predicting that, with increasing carrion biomass, carrion food web diversity would increase horizontally and vertically, respectively increasing and decreasing carrion recycling efficiency. Using a manipulative experiment, I investigated the role of bottom-up and top-down forces affecting plant communities during …

Characterization Of Fatty Acid Composition Of Bull Sperm With Varied Cryotolerance, Holly Evans
Characterization Of Fatty Acid Composition Of Bull Sperm With Varied Cryotolerance, Holly Evans
Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this study were to determine fatty acid composition and acrosome status from bull sperm with different freezabilities (n = 12). We hypothesized that lipid fractions had differentiated fatty acid compositions and such differences influence sperm freezability and the sperm acrosome. Fatty acids were extracted from fresh frozen sperm and fractionated by solid-phase extraction. Thirtyour fatty acids were quantified. Saturated fatty acids were predominant, accounting for 71 to 80% of fatty acids in both fractions. Differences in composition between fractions existed (P < 0.001). Branched chain fatty acid concentrations (15 to 18 µg) were almost twice that of polyunsaturated fatty acid concentrations found in the polar fractions (8 to 9 µg; P < 0.001). Sperm with differentiated freezabilities had few differences in 22:0, 18:1 cis 9, and 14:0 13-methyl fatty acids (P ≤ 0.011). Analyses of acrosome status of sperm revealed that acrosomes were affected differently among bulls.
A Modular Open-Source Pre-Processing Tool For Finite Element Simulations Of Additive Manufacturing Processes, William Furr
A Modular Open-Source Pre-Processing Tool For Finite Element Simulations Of Additive Manufacturing Processes, William Furr
Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing has shown the ability to produce highly complex geometries that are not easily manufactured through traditional means. However, the implications of building these complex geometries regarding thermal history requires more attention. AM process simulations have proven to be computationally expensive and require large amounts of pre-processing to execute. This thesis will start with a review of additive manufacturing along with current modeling efforts. Then, the development of a pre-processing tool for finite element simulations of these processes is presented. It is shown that the pre-processing tool significantly decreases the total time-to-simulation by removing manual steps. Finally, a study …

Service And Empathy: A Comparison Study Of Intercultural Experiences Among Students At Mississippi College, Victoria Rose Marshall
Theses and Dissertations
Service to the community is a key element in mission statements of public and private universities. In the 21st century, higher education shifted by establishing community engagement offices and encouraging student community service through service-learning. Previous literature indicated that experiential learning increased ethnocultural empathy and volunteerism among college students. This study compares two experiential learning programs’ influence on the ethnocultural empathy development among college students at Mississippi College, a private, religious-affiliated university to explore how this empathy increases community service. 38 students were asked to complete the Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy (Wang et al. 2003) and were interviewed about their …
The Effects Of Impure Water Sources On The Early-Age Properties Of Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cements, Wendy Long
The Effects Of Impure Water Sources On The Early-Age Properties Of Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cements, Wendy Long
Theses and Dissertations
One of the benefits of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements is that these materials gain strength rapidly, where strength development is often measured in hours instead of days. This property makes these materials desirable for use in temporary, non-reinforced repairs of roadways, airfields, and navigable locks. The rapid repair of these infrastructure elements is critical to transporting supplies into regions devastated by disaster. In these austere environments, potable water may not be available in sufficient quantities to make vital repairs, and the use of impure water in the production of CSA cement-based concrete would be advantageous. However, the hydration products formed …
Evaluating The Applicability Of Deep Learning Techniques In Agricultural Systems Modeling, Babak Saravi
Evaluating The Applicability Of Deep Learning Techniques In Agricultural Systems Modeling, Babak Saravi
Theses and Dissertations
A rapidly expanding world population and extreme climate change have made food production a crucial challenge in the twentyirst century. Therefore, improving crop production through agricultural management could be an effective solution for this challenge. However, due to the associated cost and time to perform field works, researchers widely rely on agricultural system modeling to examine the impacts of different crop management scenarios. However, due to the complexity of agricultural system modeling, their applications in producing practical knowledge for producers are limited. Concurrently, deep learning techniques have been recognized as a preferred method when dealing with large datasets. This study …

Finite Element Analysis Of The Mechanisms Of Impact Mitigation Inherent To The North American Bison (Bison Bison) Skull, Andrea Karen Persons
Theses and Dissertations
North American bison (Bovidae: Bison bison) incur blunt impacts to the interparietal and frontal bones when they engage in head-to-head fights. To investigate the impact mitigation of these bones, a finite element analysis of the skull under loading conditions was performed. Based on anatomical and histological studies, the interparietal and frontal bones are both comprised of a combination of haversian and plexiform bone, and are both underlain by bony septa. Additionally, the interparietal bone is thicker than the frontal. Data regarding the mechanical properties of bison bone are scarce, but the results of a phylogenetic analysis infer that the material …

Flexural Bending Test Of Topology Optimization Additively Manufactured Parts, Mohammed Afify
Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this work is to model, manufacture, and test an optimized Messerschmitt-BölkowBlohm beam using additive manufacturing. The implemented method is the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization of a minimum compliance design. The Taubin smoothing technique was used to attenuate geometric noise and minimize the formation of overhanging angles and residual stresses due to the thermal activity of the selective laser melting process. The optimized model required examination and repair of local errors such as surface gaps, non-manifold vertices, and intersecting facets. A comparison between experimental and numerical results of the linear elastic regimes showed that the additively manufactured …
Fraze Mowing For Overseeding Establishment And Removal Of Perennial Ryegrass, Matthew Carpenter
Fraze Mowing For Overseeding Establishment And Removal Of Perennial Ryegrass, Matthew Carpenter
Theses and Dissertations
Fraze mowing offers a new tool used in both overseeding establishment and removal of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Research objectives were to determine the most effective timing of fraze mowing in overseeding establishment and removal, as well as to compare fraze mowing to other establishment and removal methods. Fall overseeding studies suggest that fraze mowing and scalping in mid-October provides the fastest establishment of ryegrass. However, by mid-March all treatments led to visually similar results. When evaluating removal timings, fraze mowing performed in early- and late-May led to faster visual bermudagrass recovery than March and April timings. Early-season application …

Development And Evaluation Of An Automated System To Deliver A Live-Attenuated Edwardsiella Ictaluri Vaccine In Commercial Catfish Production Systems, John Wesley Lowe
Theses and Dissertations
Catfish aquaculture is the largest cultured food fish industry in the United States, accounting for approximately $375 million in sales annually, with Mississippi leading the industry with 36,200 surface acres of production. However, infectious diseases such as enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC) are decreasing production efficiencies, creating losses of $40-60 million annually. Live-attenuated oral ESC vaccines are effective in preventing ESC infections, but have not been widely adopted by the catfish industry due to the lack of a system to administer the oral vaccine at the scale seen in commercial catfish production systems. An automated system was developed to administer …

Theses and Dissertations
Increasing energy demand and various problems associated with fossil fuels such as environmental pollution, global warming and diminishing petroleum reserves have greatly stimulated production of fuels and chemicals from renewable sources. Lignocellulosic biomass has been considered as one of the potential sources for a variety of fuels and industrial chemicals. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been identified as an excellent platform molecule because it is a flexible intermediate for the synthesis of bio-renewable fuels and materials. HMF can be easily obtained from acid-catalyzed hydration of biomass-derived carbohydrates (hexoses) in various media. HMF can be converted to energy products such as 2,5-bis(alkoxymethyl)furans (BAMFs), …
How The Dogface Got Its Color: How Genetics And The Environment Influence Color Variation Within And Between Species In The Zerene Butterfly, Jennifer Fenner
How The Dogface Got Its Color: How Genetics And The Environment Influence Color Variation Within And Between Species In The Zerene Butterfly, Jennifer Fenner
Theses and Dissertations
A fundamental question in biology is: How is variation generated? At a basic level, the vast amount of variation and biodiversity is generated through a combination of genetic and environmental processes. Traditionally these processes were treated independently, but recently fields such as evolutionary development have worked to unify our understanding of these mechanisms and to investigate how these processes interact with each other to generate variation. Developmental plasticity provides a fantastic framework for studying how genetic and environmental (GxE) interactions shape and maintain natural variation. Butterflies and their wing color patterns have long been model systems for plasticity. This dissertation …
Spatial Responses Of Adult Male White-Tailed (Odocoileus Virginianus) Deer To Hunting Risk, Ashley Chance
Spatial Responses Of Adult Male White-Tailed (Odocoileus Virginianus) Deer To Hunting Risk, Ashley Chance
Theses and Dissertations
Movement responses of male white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to hunting pressure vary across study systems and risk levels and may be confounded by breeding season. At the average levels of risk present on my study area (0.04 hunters/hectare/day) deer almost never altered behavior in response to hunter proximity. Home range characteristics did not predict risk exposure or risk management. Behavioral responses to levels of risk present in my study appear to be minimal, however bucks altered home range size and movements as the breeding season progressed. Most unconstrained movements occurred in early rut, with a 50% reduction during late and …
Tcb Minimizing Model Of Computation (Tmmc), Naila Bushra
Tcb Minimizing Model Of Computation (Tmmc), Naila Bushra
Theses and Dissertations
The integrity of information systems is predicated on the integrity of processes that manipulate data. Processes are conventionally executed using the conventional von Neumann (VN) architecture. The VN computation model is plagued by a large trusted computing base (TCB), due to the need to include memory and input/output devices inside the TCB. This situation is becoming increasingly unjustifiable due to the steady addition of complex features such as platform virtualization, hyper-threading, etc. In this research work, we propose a new model of computation - TCB minimizing model of computation (TMMC) - which explicitly seeks to minimize the TCB, viz., hardware …
