Hiding In Plain Sight: Medical Theses, Slavery, And Reparative Archival Practices, Anna Marie Schuldt
MUSC Conference Presentations
Despite the prevalence of the use and abuse of enslaved individuals in the pursuit of medical education at the Medical College of South Carolina during the pre-Civil War era, evidence of the institution's involvement with slavery is scarce in the discoverable archival resources at the Waring Historical Library. The Waring Historical Library Inaugural Theses Project aims to identify and bring these hidden narratives into focus through reparative description work. Key outcomes include enhancing the outdated index, transferring it to a LibGuide format, and improving descriptions, subject headings, and transcripts within catalog records. The project emphasizes how interdisciplinary cooperation between archivists …
Librarian Advocates For Open Educational Resources (Oer) As A Catalyst For Innovation In Health Sciences Education, Christine Andresen
Librarian Advocates For Open Educational Resources (Oer) As A Catalyst For Innovation In Health Sciences Education, Christine Andresen
MUSC Conference Presentations
Purpose: Data shows that at least 81% of medical students and 75% of health professional doctoral students graduate and enter the profession with student loans. Access to textbooks and ancillary instructional materials is essential, yet data shows that textbook prices have increased over 1000% between 1977-2015, exacerbating the systematic barriers to student access, affordability, and success in higher education. Open Educational Resources (OER) can reduce student textbook costs while also giving faculty the flexibility to adapt course materials to meet specific course needs. Librarians have experience leveraging subscription resources to reduce student costs and are well positioned to promote the …

Resiliency Strategies For Brightly Burning Librarians, Christine Andresen, Irene Lubker
MUSC Conference Presentations
Purpose: Librarianship is a helping profession which means caring is one of our superpowers, yet also makes us more likely to cross our own boundaries in our efforts to support our users, leaving us vulnerable to burnout. Our best intentions, fears of missing out, and need to prove our value often drive us to the limits of our abilities to sustain the levels of service we provide. This presentation will prepare librarians with strategies to promote overall well-being and foster resiliency.
Description: Health sciences librarians often happily agree to new, exciting opportunities, only to find that our best intentions end …

Learning From Medication Errors: Leveraging A Journal Scan Assignment To Teach Medication Safety, Rachel Whitney, Marc Lapointe
MUSC Conference Presentations
Background: Medication Safety is an integral part of health sciences education that is not always provided enough dedicated time during the standard didactic curriculum. At our institution, medication safety is an elective course offered to second-year College of Pharmacy students (P2s). This elective is meant to supplement the ‘Just Culture’ concept in healthcare that is embraced by our university medical center. This elective is taught through a combination of hands-on assignments and guest lecturers sharing their real-world experiences along with the direct impacts of medication errors. This session will discuss how a journal scan assignment was structured to help reinforce …
Let’S Make A Deal: Gamification Of Literature Searching, Rachel Whitney
Let’S Make A Deal: Gamification Of Literature Searching, Rachel Whitney
MUSC Conference Presentations
Background: In the Doctor of Pharmacy program at our institution, first-year pharmacy students (P1s) are introduced to literature searching during the Introduction to Drug Information course. The liaison librarian embedded into this course found that students were struggling with feeling confident in their literature searching skills despite participating in active-learning activities. An area of opportunity was identified through the course evaluation feedback that students wanted more fun and engaging ways to practice literature searching. This paper will discuss one librarian’s experience with gamification, and provide two examples of gamified literature searching instruction sessions.
Description: Introduction to Drug Information is set …

MUSC Conference Presentations
BACKGROUND
The purpose of the Network of the National Library of Medicine’s (NNLM) Student Engagement Interest Group (SEIG) is to advance the mission of NNLM by sharing participating regional offices and center's (ROCs) student engagement-related activities and prioritizing those appropriate for national coordination. Additionally, the SEIG prioritizes students, high school age and older, from traditionally marginalized communities and those underrepresented in biomedical research when conducting student engagement activities.
Since the creation of the SEIG, the group has explored how NNLM can support students in acquiring experience in a professional setting, gaining access to mentors who can guide them in preparation …
Tracking Professional Growth: Developing A Digital Professional Portfolio Training, Rachel Whitney
Tracking Professional Growth: Developing A Digital Professional Portfolio Training, Rachel Whitney
MUSC Conference Presentations
Background: Creating a professional portfolio is important for promotion, tenure, annual evaluation, and professional certification. As an early career health sciences librarian, I was advised to track my accomplishments as they happened to make applying for a promotion easier in the future. After successfully creating and utilizing a digital professional portfolio of my own, other librarians asked me to teach them how to develop digital portfolios. An in-service program was created that would provide training, support, and a template for both new and experienced library faculty.
Description: After investigating options for an electronic method of organizing and tracking my professional …

The Intersection Of Research And Community Health: Using Evidence To Inform Population Health Strategy, Elizabeth Crabtree Killen, Emily Brennan, Amanda Davis
MUSC Conference Presentations
Background: Social determinants of health (SDoH) are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, and work, and they significantly impact an individual’s health and wellbeing. With robust connections to community partners, access to data, and touch points with patients, healthcare systems are ideally positioned to address SDoH, yet systems struggle to identify how best to capture and manage SDoH needs. The hospital within our academic medical center leveraged a partnership with our medical library to create an evidence review program, specifically aimed at informing the health system’s population health strategy and implementation tactics using best research evidence.
