This thesis contributes to on-going research at Marshall University on effects of excess nitrogen (N) deposition on hardwood forests. Excess N can decrease plant biodiversity and enhance loss of nutrients (e.g., Ca⁺⁺). Preliminary results have suggested that excess N has increased cover of Rubus (blackberry) in the herbaceous layer. The purpose of this study was to quantify the response of Rubus to the N treatment, relating Rubus cover to species richness and using foliar analysis to examine effects on nutrient availability. The purpose of this study was to collect data on graduate reading compliance specific to the field of school psychology. This study examined the amount of required reading completed by graduate students in a National Association of School Psychologists accredited school psychology training program. An online questionnaire developed by McMinn & colleagues (2009) was adapted to fit the context of the current study. Thirty-two students (70%) responded. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) revealed that reading compliance was affected by the number of adults living with students, F(1, 20) = 6.14, p = .022, ηp2 = .235. Students were most motivated to …

This study examined the level of integration of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) within the population of 164 teacher preparation faculty members in 18 initial teacher preparation programs in West Virginia. A three part researcher developed survey was mailed to each dean/director for distribution to the initial teacher professional education faculty. Deans/directors were also given the option of participating in a follow up interview and were asked a series of questions based on a researcher developed interview protocol.

In general, initial teacher professional education faculty members described their level of integration of CCSS as between some and significant integration. …

This thesis examines three reactions to the Vietnam War—Neoconservatism, the Abrams Doctrine, and the War Powers Resolution—and argues that those reactions have shaped America‟s foreign policy agenda in the last fifty years. Beginning with the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, exploring the Reagan era and its interventions in Grenada and Latin America, and ending in the mid-1990s, this thesis traces the politics of war in the United States since Vietnam and argues that the culmination of these three reactions during the George H.W. Bush presidency has resulted in the subsequent direction of the country‟s objectives abroad.

The purpose of this study was to learn how military veterans experienced higher education campus climates. A recent West Virginia law requires state-operated colleges to become veteran friendly and this study examined the perceptions of veterans who attended college before and after the passage of the law. Six veterans participated in a series of in-depth interviews regarding their personal experiences with attention given to factors that enabled and/or constrained their academic progress. The interviews were electronically recorded using audio media and standard conventions of informed consent were followed. There is a growing need (in the medical field) to design personalized therapy for cancer patients. Decades of cancer research have found no silver bullet that can cure all or even most patients. This study evaluated four patients affected by central nervous system (CNS) tumors (Ependymoma and Glioblastoma), and found that tumors with the same histology had unique responses to treatment. Each sample presented different levels of heterogeneity in expressed biomarkers and responded to drugs at varying levels.

Schur functions form a well-known basis for the ring of symmetric functions. The Littlewood-Richardson rule was introduced to expand the product of two Schur functions as a positive sum of Schur functions. Remmel and Whitney introduced an algorithmic way to find the coefficients of Schur functions appearing in the expansion. Direct application liming (DAL) has been used to neutralize acidified streams to restore aquatic biota. This mitigation technique has been used globally for decades, yet little data exist on its effects on amphibian populations. My study investigated the effects of liming on amphibians by measuring variability in life histories of larval Gyrinophilus porphyriticus. I collected larvae from six streams in the Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia. I examined the effects of DAL on age structure, and I failed to detect a treatment effect. A major challenge for effective gene therapy is systemic delivery of viruses carrying therapeutic genes into affected tissue. The immunogenic nature of human adenoviruses (Ads) limits their use for intratumoral (IT) injection in gene therapy. Ads transfection is further hampered by the fluctuating presence of Coxsackie and Adenovirus Receptor (CAR) and integrins on the cells’ surface. To circumvent these limitations we developed a novel approach wherein Ads are encapsulated inside the shell of lyophilized, lipid-encapsulated, perfluorocarbon microbubbles (MBs)/ultrasound (US) contrast agents, which act as delivery vehicles for a sitespecific gene transfer system.

Stone, the organization was designed to help establish independent media in the former Communist bloc. Though the International Media Fund worked throughout Eastern Europe, this historical research focuses on the organization’s efforts in Croatia. This thesis offers the first unearthing of Stone’s role in the International Media Fund and details about the work the man and the organization did in attempting to establish a free and unfettered press in Croatia.

The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of traditional and cyberstalking on a medium sized college campus in the Southeastern United States. Included was an examination of the impact of the victim-offender relationship, to whom victimization was reported, and gender patterns of social media use. The study explored whether having an older sibling affects the GPA of a student more than that of a younger sibling. This study explored the public service announcements (PSAs) produced by institutions of higher education that competed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s 2013-14 postseason football bowl games. Utilizing content analysis and survey results, the researcher examined the level of content distinction between and within institutional groups based on athletic conference, Carnegie classification, total student enrollment, and primary target audience. The researcher also investigated the role the PSAs played in marketing campaigns conducted by the institutions and the additional marketing strategies used in those campaigns. This study examined administrative prevalence rates of Intellectual Disability for children and adolescents within Southern West Virginia over a three-year-period compared to rates in neighboring Virginia counties with designated Appalachian status to determine if significantly different rates were evident, and if prevalence varied according to poverty, maternal age, and race/ethnicity across all districts. The results revealed that despite Southern West Virginia and Western Virginia being geographically similar, Southern West Virginia LEAs maintain significantly higher ID rates. Findings indicated poverty and teen pregnancy are correlated with higher ID rates but not race/ethnicity. The prevalence study points to the need for additional …

Auxin is the primary hormone responsible for plant growth and development. Regulation of auxin-response genes occurs through transcriptional activators (auxin response factors called ARFs) which bind to auxin response elements (AuxREs). Some auxin-responsive genes encode aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid synthase (ACS) enzymes which regulate the production of the plant hormone ethylene. The major research objective was to evaluate transcriptional cross talk between auxin and ethylene. Global amphibian declines pose a major threat to the world’s biodiversity. We examined the observation bias associated with volunteer based anuran surveys, such as the North American Amphibian Monitoring Protocol (NAAMP). We followed NAAMP protocol to examine if variation in the persons (1-3) in an observer unit affected observer error. We hypothesized that observation units with multiple observers have less observer bias and would better report anuran assemblages compared to single observers. Larger observer units had fewer incidences of false positive observations. This is a study of how participation in a community-based home-visitation program called Maternal Infant Health Outreach Worker (MIHOW) can have an effect on maternal smoking behavior and infant birthweight, and how the timing of enrollment can have an impact on those effects. Each participant was randomly assigned to the treatment or control group and answered survey questions during their pregnancies at the time of enrollment and after their babies reached one month of age.
