The Function And Mechanism Of Chmp1a In Tumor Development, Jing Li Jan 2008

The Function And Mechanism Of Chmp1a In Tumor Development, Jing Li

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Chmp1A (Chromatin modifying protein 1A/Charged multivesicular protein 1A) is a member of the ESCRT-III (Endosomal Sorting Complex Required for Transport) family, which mediates trafficking via MVB (multivesicular body) formation and sorting. Our studies suggest that Chmp1A is a novel tumor suppressor, especially in the pancreas. Knockdown of Chmp1A resulted in an increase of anchorage-independent growth of HEK 293T cells. Moreover, we showed that Chmp1A depleted HEK 293T cells forms tumor in xenograft mice. Knockdown of Chmp1A in PanC-1 cells promoted cell growth. In contrast, Doxycycline induced over-expression of Chmp1A in pancreatic cancer cells (PanC-1) resulted in cell growth inhibition, tumor …

The Geography Of Open Dumps In Rural Appalachia, Bj Jones Jan 2008

The Geography Of Open Dumps In Rural Appalachia, Bj Jones

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The dumping of waste into the environment has plagued the mountains of Rural Appalachia for decades. Tire, cars, appliances, and drug producing materials routinely are illegally disposed of via open dumps. The purpose of this research is to reveal the motives of the damaging open dumpsites that damage the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains. The states of Kentucky and West Virginia were analyzed through the use of GIS and descriptive statistics. The distance to refuse centers and application of disposal fees are the leading factors that result to the use of open dumps.

Collaborative planning is also considered important; however, it …

What Law Enforcement In West Virginia Know About Stalking Crimes, Sandra Kiser-Griffith Jan 2008

What Law Enforcement In West Virginia Know About Stalking Crimes, Sandra Kiser-Griffith

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Emerging research is beginning to reveal how prevalent, and dangerous, stalking can be, especially in situations that involve domestic or former domestic partners. As front line responders to stalking-related crimes, it would seem imperative that law enforcement personnel have extensive training and be knowledgeable about a broad range of stalking-related issues. A victim’s well-being can be directly impacted by the actions and interventions of the officers handling his or her case. Unfortunately, however, many states, including West Virginia, still do not require that officers receive stalking training. In an attempt to establish how well informed law enforcement officers in West …

Non-Preemptive Shunting In M/M/1 And Dynamic Service Queueing Systems, Steven Lacek Jan 2008

Non-Preemptive Shunting In M/M/1 And Dynamic Service Queueing Systems, Steven Lacek

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

We provide a study of two queueing systems, namely, an M/M/1 queueing system in which an incoming customer shunts, or skips line, and a dynamic server in an infinite capacity system moving among service nodes. In the former, we explore various aspects of the system, including waiting time, and the relationships between shunting and position in queue and rate of service. Through use of global balance equations, we find the probability that an arriving non-priority customer, finding customers waiting in the system, will shunt to a position other than behind the queue. In the latter, we explore a system in …

Assembly And Function Of Myosin Ii On Ultraviolet/Ozone Patterned Trimethylchlorosilane Substrates, Madhukar B. Kolli

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The exploration of biomolecular motors in nanotechnological applications has generated much interest in the scientific community. Although the recent progress has been very promising, several requirements have yet to be fulfilled in order for motor proteins to be useful in nanotechnological applications. Here, we present a simple method for patterning myosin II on a microstructured surface. Our findings indicate that UV/ozone treatment can be used to alter the hydrophobicity of trimethyl-chloro-silane (TMCS) coated glass surfaces, to alter protein binding, and effectively produce localized motor activity. Taken together, these data suggest that photoreactive patterning may be useful for the selective localization …

Limiting Problems In Integration And An Extension Of The Real Numbers System, Tue Ngoc Ly Jan 2008

Limiting Problems In Integration And An Extension Of The Real Numbers System, Tue Ngoc Ly

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

When considering the limit of a sequence of functions, some properties still hold under the limit, but some do not. Unfortunately, the integration is among those not holding. There are only certain classes of functions that still hold the integrability, and the values of the integrals under the limiting process. Starting with Riemann integrals, the limiting integrations are restricted not only on the class of functions, but also on the set on which the integral is taken. By redefining the integration process, Lebesgue integrals successfully and significantly extend both the class of the functions integrated and the sets on which …

Characterization Of Unusual Gymnamoebae Isolated From The Marine Environment, Margaret Wacera Mbugua

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Amoebae are important heterotrophic protists (protozoa) and this study focuses on three unusual forms from the marine environment. Amoebae are ubiquitous and play an important role as consumers in microbial communities. A common coastal ctenophore (Mnemiopsis sp.) is known to harbor an undescribed naked amoeba on the comb plate surface. The nature of the symbiotic association is unknown although electron microscopy suggests these micrograzers are degrading comb plates (Moss et al., 2001). A second amoeba isolate from mangrove waters is new to science by virtue of its distinctive trophic form that does not conform to any described species. …

Not Your Father’S Border: An Examination Of The Border In Northern Ireland And Its Relevance To The Global Change In The Importance Of World Borders, Aaron Patterson Jan 2008

Not Your Father’S Border: An Examination Of The Border In Northern Ireland And Its Relevance To The Global Change In The Importance Of World Borders, Aaron Patterson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Humanity has long maintained barriers separating specific entities from others. Ranging from cultural, religious, financial, and racial differences among a few others, the reasoning behind borders has remained a purely human endeavor. But our current golden age of technology has somewhat shrunk, or at least reassessed the necessity for borders. The boundaries of today, while many remain in the same locations as in the past, are vastly different from the borders created by previous generations. Globalization, a relatively new term, has made communication simple and fast. The noticeable result has been, of course, better communication between locations, and thus easing …

Effects Of Aging And Gender On Regulators Of Muscle Adaptation In F344/Bn Rat Model, Satyanarayana Paturi Jan 2008

Effects Of Aging And Gender On Regulators Of Muscle Adaptation In F344/Bn Rat Model, Satyanarayana Paturi

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle mass and strength that occurs with aging. Here we examine the effects of aging and gender on the regulation of molecules believed to regulate muscle growth and adaptation in the F344/BN rat. In male animals, soleus and EDL muscle/body weight ratio declined continuously with aging while muscle atrophy in female animals plateaued at 26-months and remained constant thereafter. Aging increased the phosphorylation of protein kinase-B (Akt) and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in the female but not male soleus muscle. This finding was associated with the attenuation of muscle atrophy observed in female …

West Virginia Streamside Salamander Guilds And Environmental Variables With An Emphasis On Pseudotriton Ruber Ruber, Kathryn Rebecca Pawlik Jan 2008

West Virginia Streamside Salamander Guilds And Environmental Variables With An Emphasis On Pseudotriton Ruber Ruber, Kathryn Rebecca Pawlik

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Amphibian distributions are greatly influenced by environmental variables, due in part to semi-permeable skin which makes amphibians susceptible to both desiccation and toxin absorption. This study was conducted to determine which streamside salamander species were sympatric and how environmental variables may have influenced habitat choices. One hundred sixty streams were surveyed throughout 55 counties in West Virginia during the summer of 2007. At each site, a 10 m 2 quadrat was established around a central aquatic habitat. While surveying, I looked under natural cover objects, in vegetation, and through leaf litter. I recorded species, cover object type, and location on …

Terrestrial Habitat Use Of Marbled Salamanders Ambystoma Opacum: A Site Specific Approach, Frank Piccininni Jan 2008

Terrestrial Habitat Use Of Marbled Salamanders Ambystoma Opacum: A Site Specific Approach, Frank Piccininni

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Habitat destruction, fragmentation and degradation have contributed heavily to the decline of amphibian populations such as Marbled Salamanders (Ambystoma opacum). Often, ambystomatid water resources are conserved without consideration for the equally important terrestrial habitat. This is partly due to a lack of information regarding the relationship between ecological succession, plant community composition, microhabitat and salamander abundance. Three sampling transects consisting of drift fence arrays, vegetation assessments and microhabitat surveys were extended 100 m into the terrestrial habitat surrounding a seasonal wetland at Beech Fork State Park in Wayne County, West Virginia. Principal components analysis was used to identify …

A Continued Study Of The Use Of Created Ponds For Amphibian Breeding In Fragmented Forested Areas, Amy Elizabeth Schneider

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Amphibian populations are declining worldwide due to factors such as habitat degradation, fragmentation and destruction. I conducted a study to explore the use of created ponds in a forested habitat by breeding amphibians, specifically Rana sylvatica and Ambystoma maculatum. The objectives were to examine the movement of these animals after leaving the ponds, the survival and movement of juveniles, how both respond to fragmentation, and how similar the created ponds were to natural ones. Nine ponds were constructed in December 2003 in the MeadWestvaco Wildlife Ecosystem Research Forest (MWERF) in Randolph County, West Virginia. All trapped amphibians were measured and …
