Providing End-Of-Life Counseling: A Narrative Inquiry, Carol Hecht, Sibyl West

Adultspan Journal

This qualitative study aimed to address the gap in the research related to end-of-life counseling by exploring the experiences of counselors working with clients at end of life. While counseling literature and education are lacking regarding end of life, many counselors will work alongside clients approaching death. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to better understand the nuanced experiences of counselors providing end-of-life counseling and (b) to explore the supports and preparations helpful for counselors to provide end-of-life counseling. A narrative approach, using the Listening Guide (Gilligan, 2015), was employed to analyze and present the stories of three …

Using The Gerontological Imagination To Explore Suicide Among Older Adults: An Interdisciplinary Perspective For Professional Counselors, Mary Chase Mize, Afroze Shaikh

Adultspan Journal

Gerontology, the study of aging and older adulthood, is a vast field consisting of many intersecting disciplines, such as medicine, nutrition, public policy, psychology, social work, and professional counseling. As the older adult population rapidly increases, so too will the prevalence of mental health concerns among this population, including risk for suicide. Older adults presently comprise 16.5% of the U.S. population, yet account for 19.3% of all deaths by suicide (Drapeau & McIntosh, 2020). Professional counselors are newly eligible Medicare providers and can close gaps in healthcare access for older adults who rely on Medicare to receive mental health services, …

Considerations Of Medicare Telehealth Services With Older Adults, Sonah Kho, Amanda Dediego Sep 2024

Considerations Of Medicare Telehealth Services With Older Adults, Sonah Kho, Amanda Dediego

Adultspan Journal

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic set in motion a rapid expansion of mental health services offered via telehealth. With this rapid expansion came the need to examine how policy and practice should be shaped in a future where telehealth is considered common in counseling practice. For counselors to understand how to support older adult clients in using telehealth services, they must understand telehealth policy. Following the eligibility of licensed counselors to participate in Medicare, counselors need to stay abreast of regulatory changes regarding restrictions and regulations on use of telehealth for mental and behavioral health services, including video and …

Adultspan Journal

Licensed professional counselors (LPCs) are now eligible to provide mental health counseling to older adults as Medicare providers. Many older adults receive home delivered (HDM) and congregate (CM) meal services through the Aging Services Network, though their mental health impact remains under examined. This study compared the mental health and suicide risk of older adults receiving HDM or CM services. Our cross-sectional study of 221 HDM and 150 CM recipients from 2018-2020 found significant group differences in psychological distress, t(366) = 3.28, p = .001, perceived burdensomeness; t(357.31) = 2.77, p = .006, and thwarted belongingness, t(357.96) …

Methodologies For Dry Fixation And Taxidermy Of Education-Oriented Scorpion Specimens, Victoria Tang

Euscorpius

Scorpions hold a renowned status as iconic creatures across numerous cultures in the world. Traditionally preserved as desiccated specimens for educational purposes, they have been exhibited in museums and pedagogic collections, serving as concrete epistemological conduits for public education on biodiversity. However, these specimens frequently lack meticulous organization, potentially misrepresenting the animals’ ethological characteristics. This brief article aims to offer paradigmatic guidance for taxidermy of scorpions, ensuring a more accurate depiction of their in vivo habitus, achievable through the use of readily obtainable tools and undemanding techniques.

Three New Species Of Genus Scorpiops Peters, 1861 From Tibet, China (Scorpiones: Scorpiopidae), With Implications For The Diagnostic Values Of Qualitative Characters, Victoria Tang, Kaichen Ouyang, Zhenbang Liu, František Šťáhlavský

Euscorpius

Three new species of genus Scorpiops Peters, 1861 are described from Tibet Autonomous Region, China. S. deshpandei sp. n. is described based on an adult male and an immature pair collected from Mêdog County, Nyingchi, with additional molecular evidence substantiating its validity against S. longimanus Pocock, 1893. S. kovariki sp. n. is featured by a single adult female from Zayü. This species is only weakly supported by its genetic distance from S. jendeki Kovařík, 1994, but empirical understanding of the morphological variation in Scorpiops species motivated us to consider them as distinct. S. matthewi sp. n. is based on …

The Effect Of Blood Flow Restriction Training On Quadriceps Activity After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Preliminary Randomized Controlled Trial, Florian Forelli, Camille Nguyen, Jean Mazeas, Georgios Kakavas, Timothy E. Hewett, Andreas Bjerregaard, Vasileios Korakakis, Alexandre Jm Rambaud

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Background

After anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, a crucial priority is restoring knee muscle strength, especially the quadriceps, to reach the pre-injury strength levels as fast as possible. A feasible alternative to heavy loading might be blood flow restriction training that may elicit quadriceps muscle strength adaptations using low external loads. This study assessed whether quadriceps strengthening using low load blood flow restriction (LL-BFR) would enhance electromyographic (EMG) activity of the vastus medialis (VMO), vastus lateralis (VLO), and rectus femoris (RF) similar to quadriceps strengthening using heavy loads resistance training (HLRT). The secondary objective was to assess intra-quadriceps regional EMG differences …

Exploring Gender Variation In Medical Student Professional Identity Development: A Longitudinal Study Through The Career Eulogy Perspective, William J. Crump, Sarah M. Fisher, Ronald R. Gilley, Whitney T. Gilley, Craig Ziegler

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Background

Empathy towards patients is a key component of a physician's professional identity. In longitudinal studies at their campus, the authors of this study observed that women had higher empathy scores as measured by a standard Likert scale survey; however, the differences were insignificant in most training years.

Methods

In this larger study, the authors confirmed this finding and used a career eulogy projective exercise to explore gender differences in professional identity formation more deeply than a Likert scale score. The study included 76 medical students from all 4 years of training at a rural, regional medical school campus in …

A Case Of Herpes Zoster In An Immunocompetent 19-Year-Old Female, Martin Nguyen, Jennifer Read, Emma Filary, Aaron Mcguffin

Marshall Journal of Medicine

This case report describes the unusual presentation of herpes zoster in a fully vaccinated teenage patient and highlights management considerations. The patient is a 19-year-old female who presented with pain in her left lower back, side, and upper thigh for approximately 3 days, which was then followed by the eruption of a vesicular rash along the L2 dermatome consistent with herpes zoster. Herpes zoster is predominantly observed only in elderly and immunocompromised individuals, primarily due to the widespread use of the varicella-zoster virus vaccine for children since 1995, when it became part of the routine immunization schedule. However, this case …

Management Of Multiple Infantile Hemangiomas In A Preterm Infant: A Clinical Case Report, Erin Reese, Wyatt Grimm, Aaron Mcguffin

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Infantile hemangiomas (IH), the most prevalent infantile tumor, are benign vascular tumors arising from proliferation and dysregulation of angiogenesis. Hemangiomas are present after birth and undergo 3 stages: proliferation, plateau, and involution. IH are further categorized into superficial, deep, and mixed based on skin and internal organ involvement. IH are clinically diagnosed, and treatment options include active observation, corticosteroids, beta-blockers, pingyangmycin, vincristine, or laser treatment. Complications of untreated IH include ulceration, airway obstruction, and visual obstruction at sites of enlarging lesions. While most cases are benign, there are associated complications prompting a thorough investigation and proper management. Understanding a hemangioma …

“We Love You In America”: Spiro Agnew, The Media, And The Building Of An Emotional Community, Charles Holden Jul 2024

“We Love You In America”: Spiro Agnew, The Media, And The Building Of An Emotional Community, Charles Holden

Journal of 20th Century Media History

Spiro Agnew, Richard Nixon’s often-mocked Vice President, played a critical role in building the right-wing, populist base of white working- and middle-class supporters for the Republican party. Early in his vice presidency, Agnew used his access to media to cultivate mistrust of the same media, focusing especially on television political analysis, the Washington Post, and the New York Times. In speech after speech he used the same criticisms of the media to attack other parts of American society the administration viewed as the opposition. Rather than persuading these voters on policy positions, Agnew went straight for the heart. Much to …

Karl Freund’S Hollywood Aesthetic: Maintaining Visual Style Within The Studio System, Casey Walker Jul 2024

Karl Freund’S Hollywood Aesthetic: Maintaining Visual Style Within The Studio System, Casey Walker

Journal of 20th Century Media History

This article explores the distinct cinematographic style of classical Hollywood cinematographer (and briefly director) Karl Freund throughout his Hollywood studio film career (1930-1950). After leaving the German studio UFA, Freund spent two decades in the Hollywood studio system, known for its comprehensible narrative and visual style and hierarchical mode of production, which were considered constraints to the emergence of a unique visual style from any one filmmaker. Previous studies on cinematographers’ authorship and poetics focus almost universally on Gregg Toland, a cinematographer who largely worked outside of the big Hollywood studios. However, very little scholarship exists on cinematographers such as …

"Pearls And All": June Cleaver, Symbol And Myth, Judy Kutulas

Journal of 20th Century Media History

June Cleaver, the fictional matriarch of the Cleaver family on the 1950s/60s sitcom Leave it to Beaver has become a powerful symbol in American society, representing a particular version of motherhood that can be read as desirable or old-fashioned. How June became a symbol as well as a myth is what this article is about, a blend of series’ particulars, the continued willingness of the actor who played June, Barbara Billingsley, to play into the stereotype of June, the changing perspectives of boomers who watched her, and the changing possibilities of American women’s lives.
