The Revolution Will Be Televised But Not Supported: Student Protest At Marquette University, T.M. Bridges Apr 2017

The Revolution Will Be Televised But Not Supported: Student Protest At Marquette University, T.M. Bridges

3210 English Undergraduate Research: Ethnography of the University

This project examines the factors that affect the presence of student activism and student protest at Marquette University. The current social and political environment of the United States has created an exigence to discuss how students at Marquette critique their surroundings. Data is collected from a variety of sources including the author’s auto-ethnography, a review of historical and scholarly data, institutional data, and student and faculty interviews. Overall, the data shows that student protest and student activism at Marquette University exists amid a series of conflicting influences. The prioritization of donor-based funding and positive publicity, the ambiguity in the meaning …

Crossing 21st And State: Marquette-Milwaukee Relations, Gina Richard Apr 2017

Crossing 21st And State: Marquette-Milwaukee Relations, Gina Richard

3210 English Undergraduate Research: Ethnography of the University

This project delves into relations between Marquette University and the Milwaukee community, analyzes potential issues, and suggests proposals for continued change. Through field observations, multiple interviews, and wide scholarly research, I've ascertained that Marquette University, a school long-deemed isolationist and elite, is at a pivotal point in their community engagement. While Marquette shows efforts toward more meaningful community engagement, these efforts could fall short, especially if not continually cultivated. For Marquette to signal sustained and deep investment in community engagement, I propose an awareness campaign, more open and honest discussion about current tensions, and more purposeful actions of Marquette to …

Rape Talk: Student Awareness And Perceptions Of Campus Sexual Assault And Resources, Rachel Harmon Oct 2016

Rape Talk: Student Awareness And Perceptions Of Campus Sexual Assault And Resources, Rachel Harmon

3210 English Undergraduate Research: Ethnography of the University

This project evaluates student perceptions of campus sexual assault and related resources at Marquette University of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As campus sexual assault and an unsafe rape culture are still persistent, research is needed to bring about awareness and spark an open discourse of this issue. The original data of this project consists of the researcher’s autoethnography, observations of Marquette’s online sexual violence resources, student interviews, and an online student survey. After analyzing this data, the most important finding was that students do not share the same perceptions and knowledge of this issue, despite receiving the same resources. Also, the relationship …

Perceptions From Across The Pond: Building Cultural Competence From Study Abroad Experiences, Kathleen Wolff Oct 2016

Perceptions From Across The Pond: Building Cultural Competence From Study Abroad Experiences, Kathleen Wolff

3210 English Undergraduate Research: Ethnography of the University

At Marquette University, there is a large gap between the number of students who show an interest in studying abroad and those who actually participate in the study abroad process. In order to gauge why this discrepancy occurs, students’ mindsets and perceptions about studying abroad are analyzed in relation to varying degrees of cultural competence. This paper addresses the need for research about cultural competence, ultimately addressing how Marquette students value cultural competence and how this value connects to their decision to study abroad. By recognizing the worldly benefits gained from study abroad experiences, the idea of cultural competence can …

Come One, Come All: Exploring Geographical Diversity At Marquette University, Catherine Mccoy Oct 2016

Come One, Come All: Exploring Geographical Diversity At Marquette University, Catherine Mccoy

3210 English Undergraduate Research: Ethnography of the University

As an Iowa native, I often find myself surprised at the lack of representation from my home state, despite being from the Midwest. This led me to looking deeper into Marquette admissions, and ask the question, how does Marquette draw from different areas of the country? By using a mixed-method qualitative study, I was able to look into student motivations in selecting Marquette recruitment strategies of the Admissions Office, and trends in enrollment from archives and institutional data. Knowing the impact of geographic diversity on a college campus can have numerous benefits, and create a sense of inclusivity on campus. …

Higher Education: Obligation Or Opportunity?, Megan Knowles Apr 2015

Higher Education: Obligation Or Opportunity?, Megan Knowles

3210 English Undergraduate Research: Ethnography of the University

From the beginning of my experience at Marquette, I continually observed students that appeared to demonstrate no enthusiasm for getting an education, reflected in a noticeable lack of participation in class discussions. I felt my expectations of academia being crushed as students boasted about skipping lectures and passively sat in class, seemingly disinterested in the professor and the material. If college was truly regarded as an opportunity for intellectual growth, why did students treat education as nothing more than an obligation? Through mixed-method, qualitative research, combining observation, interviews, and review of scholarly literature, this project examines what factors influence student …

Will You Look Me In The Eye? The Embrace And Denial Of Human Dignity On Marquette Campus, Katie Ellington Apr 2015

Will You Look Me In The Eye? The Embrace And Denial Of Human Dignity On Marquette Campus, Katie Ellington

3210 English Undergraduate Research: Ethnography of the University

With a foundation in Levinas' pseudo-ethical philosophy of the Phenomena of the Face, this project provided a definition of human dignity and considered whether or not the Marquette University community practices a common respect for human dignity in everyday interactions on the streets of Marquette campus -- focusing in on Wisconsin Avenue due to its constant traffic of both Marquette University students and faculty and Milwaukee community members. This project observed typical day to day interactions that occur while walking around Marquette University's campus with a specific emphasis on how people affiliated with Marquette University react to other Marquette community …

An Ethnographic Examination Of Marquette University’S Housing Crunch, Colleen Pate Apr 2015

An Ethnographic Examination Of Marquette University’S Housing Crunch, Colleen Pate

3210 English Undergraduate Research: Ethnography of the University

This research project seeks to answer the question of “What factors are responsible for the housing crunch at Marquette University?” and how can we, as a university, find a feasible and responsible solution to this problem. Through research, data analysis, interviews and my own experience of housing and its shortcomings at Marquette University, this project has been eye-opening about the long-term consequences of Marquette’s housing storage as well as the opportunity that the university has to use this housing shortage to solve a multitude of problems that it’s been facing.

Kaelin Rapport - Histological Techniques For The Sex Determination Of Skeletonized Human Remains, Kaelin Rapport Oct 2014

Kaelin Rapport - Histological Techniques For The Sex Determination Of Skeletonized Human Remains, Kaelin Rapport

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2014

Determining the sex of skeletons is problematic in forensic and bio-archaeological research. Past studies demonstrate that bone cells can sometimes contain preserved sex chromosomal material in ancient samples. The sex chromosomes in skeletal remains may allow determination of sex in non-adults. The problem is explored by making 20μ thin sections stained with hematoxylin eosin. The dye highlights inactive X chromosomes (Barr Bodies) of females. The presence of the Barr Body is an indicator of female with an accuracy of greater than 99.9. This approach to identification of sex in unknown skeletons has been demonstrated with remains of individuals deceased as …

Connor Hooper - Chicago Public Housing Demolitions And Individual Sense Of Political Belonging, Connor Hooper Oct 2014

Connor Hooper - Chicago Public Housing Demolitions And Individual Sense Of Political Belonging, Connor Hooper

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2014

Brian Jacob and other scholars have pointed out how public housing in inner city areas has affected labor supply, student achievement, and a sense of belonging. However, little research has been conducted on how such particular public housing developments have shaped political orientations among low-income residents. The purpose of this research is to understand whether or not the individuals’ experiences with public housing demolitions across Chicago have affected voting participation, civic engagement, and political interest and efficacy among African-Americans who in the past have lived or currently live in Chicago public housing. Over 35 Chicago public housing residents who were …

Christina Nelson - Applying John Hagan’S Power-Control Theory To Gender Differences With Drug Abuse, Christina Nelson

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2014

Previous work has indicated that young men and women engage in drug use in different ways and for different reasons. This research tests Hagan’s Power-Control Theory to examine gender differences in adolescent drug use. This study analyzes randomly selected subsample of data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). Questions that led this study were: Do patterns of drug abuse differ by gender? To what extent can Hagan’s Power-Control Theory explain this? Control variables looked at gender, age and race. All adolescents were from the ages of 12-17. Dependent variables looked at drug use (ever, yearly, monthly). …

America Davila - Breaking The Cycle: An Examination Of Environmental, Cognitive, And Emotional Factors Of Intimate Partner Violence Victimization In Adolescence, America Davila

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2014

Recently, intimate partner violence (IPV) has gained considerable attention as a significant social and public health problem affecting not only adults but also adolescents. Based on Bandura’s social learning theory, considerable research has supported a significant link between growing up in a violent home (DV) and youth dating violence. Expanding on previous studies, we explored the cycle of IPV victimization using a sample of 1,067 adolescents (ages 18-25). We examined whether parental support, dating attitudes, and self-esteem are risk and protective factors of receiving dating aggression. The findings indicate that exposure to aggression in the family, low self-esteem, and the …

Brittany Bernal - Sensorimotor Adaptation Of Speech Through A Virtually Shortened Vocal Tract, Brittany A. Bernal Oct 2014

Brittany Bernal - Sensorimotor Adaptation Of Speech Through A Virtually Shortened Vocal Tract, Brittany A. Bernal

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2014

The broad objective of this line of research is to understand how auditory feedback manipulations may be used to elicit involuntary changes in speech articulation. We examine speech sensorimotor adaptation to supplement the development of speech rehabilitation applications that benefit from this learning phenomenon. By manipulating the acoustics of one’s auditory feedback, it is possible to elicit involuntary changes in speech articulation. We seek to understand how virtually manipulating participants’ perception of vowel space affects their speech movements by assessing acoustic variables such as formant frequency changes. Participants speak through a digital audio processing device that virtually alters the perceived …

Edwin Medina - The Influence Of Faith On The Psychosocial Well-Being Of Mexican Americans, Edwin Medina Oct 2014

Edwin Medina - The Influence Of Faith On The Psychosocial Well-Being Of Mexican Americans, Edwin Medina

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2014

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship faith has to the eleven dimensions that constitute psychological and social well-being. Though there is an existing body of literature concerned with the relationship between faith and well-being, the work examining this relationship among the Hispanic population is limited. With Latinos now constituting the single largest minority population in the United States, we employed data from a sample of 137 Mexican Americans from Wisconsin. We examined the relationship faith salience and religious behaviors have on six dimensions of psychological well-being (Ryff, 2014) and five dimensions of social well-being (Keyes, 1998). …

Rawan Atari - The Influence Of Multi-Sensory Environment On Physiological Response In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders And Children With Special Health Care Needs, Rawan Atari

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2014

A research study based on the sensory integration theory was conducted to examine the effects of multi-sensory environment (MSE) on physiological arousal in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and special health care needs. Adapted environments may serve as a mechanism to treat anxiety levels in a population of children who experience more severe generalized anxiety symptoms than typically developing children. The sample consisted of children with community-based diagnoses of ASD and children with special health care needs, primarily children diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) from the Milwaukee Center for Independence (MCFI). Treatment for the autism sample was carried out …

Aisha Bano - The Role Of Kcnq (Kv7) Potassium Channels In Schizophrenia Deficits, Aisha Bano

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

For years, studies have been conducted to treat the positive and negative symptoms and cognitive deficits of schizophrenia; it has allowed to treat the positive symptoms through regulation of dopaminergic neurons and dopamine pathways; however, we still do not know how to treat the negative symptoms and cognitive deficits. The reason we cannot treat them is due to a lack of adequate understanding of the underlying pathology which manifests itself in the behavior. Over the years, there have been multiple proposed hypotheses regarding the underlying pathology, and accordingly, medication were developed to regulate the variety of pathways in the brain …

Brittany Bernal - Sensorimotor Adaptation Of Vowel Production In Stop Consonant Contexts, Brittany A. Bernal Jul 2013

Brittany Bernal - Sensorimotor Adaptation Of Vowel Production In Stop Consonant Contexts, Brittany A. Bernal

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

The purpose of this research is to measure the compensatory and adaptive articulatory response to shifted formants in auditory feedback to compare the resulting amount of sensorimotor learning that takes place in speakers upon saying the words /pep/ and /tet/. These words were chosen in order to analyze the coarticulatory effects of voiceless consonants /p/ and /t/ on sensorimotor adaptation of the vowel /e/. The formant perturbations were done using the Audapt software, which takes an input speech sample and plays it back to the speaker in real-time via headphones. Formants are high-energy acoustic resonance patterns measured in hertz that …

Ricardo Diaz - Latino/A Mass Incarceration In Relation To The “War On Drugs”, Ricardo Diaz Jul 2013

Ricardo Diaz - Latino/A Mass Incarceration In Relation To The “War On Drugs”, Ricardo Diaz

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

Michelle Alexander, in The New Jim Crow, argues that the American legal system is a racial caste system maintained by unequal drug laws, what she terms, “The New Jim Crow” laws. This essay explores the limits of her thesis in relation to Latino/a population in the United States. Specific attention is paid to the Latino/a population in Wisconsin where racial disparities in the penal system are the greatest in America. Analysis of government data suggests that Alexander’s research reproduces the tendency of the American legal system to define race in binary terms: black and white. In effect this leaves …

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

This qualitative study will examine the way in which the masculinity of African American men is portrayed in films through a textual analysis of the leading male character in movies that have been awarded the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture. I’ll be performing a textual analysis of the following movies: “Flight”, “Book of Eli”, and “The Great Debaters”. Through the analysis of the main character, I discuss the following: types of marginalization experienced in the film, interactions/relations with (African American) women, as well as the importance that his education and/or occupation will play in his …

Nataly Aguirre - Stress, Risk, And Reward In Financial Decision-Making: The Roles Of Probability And Magnitude, Nataly Aguirre Jul 2013

Nataly Aguirre - Stress, Risk, And Reward In Financial Decision-Making: The Roles Of Probability And Magnitude, Nataly Aguirre

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

Considerable research suggests acute stress influences decision-making. There has, however, been a lack of research examining the possibility that separable components of the stress response may influence decision-making differently: the sympatho-adrenomedullary (SAM) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axes. In the current pilot study, participants engaged in a gambling task where they made choices between decisions of varied probability and magnitude for potential gains of money after being exposed to acute stress (via a variant of the cold pressor task). Further, the timing of the stressor was varied to allow examination of SAM and HPA effects separately. Cortisol and skin conductance were measured. …

Toni M. Conley - An Empirical Analysis Of How Purchase Decision Makers Arrive At A Fair Price For Subscription-Based Crm, Toni M. Conley

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

Internet based technologies have played an important role in the development of modern CRM applications over the last several years. They have been the critical driving force behind the rise of on-demand CRM, and have also enabled on-premise CRM vendors to dramatically simplify deployment and administration. As a result of this, business purchase decision makers are in the midst of a recent and accelerating shift in how they acquire marketing support solutions for their enterprises. They are moving from a CAPEX (capital expenditure) to an OPEX (operational expenditure) model. Many time, marketing support solutions acquired via an on-demand model (OPEX) …

Tamiah N. Mccoy - African American Women’S Birth Stories As Told To African American Women Interviewers, Tamiah N. Mccoy

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

Background: A woman’s birth story allows each woman to tell her own perspectives about her experience of bringing a child into the world. As healthcare providers, it is always important to value listening to and learning from our clients. Researchers systematically analyzing birth stories can yield insights on ways to improve birthing experiences for women. This is especially important for African American women, who differentially encounter the most numerous health disparities of any racial group, with twice as much infant mortality than other groups.

Purpose: This study examined birth stories of African American women in order to gain insights from …
