A Palynological Study Of Two Upland Bogs In The Gulf Coastal Plain, Alabama And Mississippi, Linda C. Pace Dec 1997

A Palynological Study Of Two Upland Bogs In The Gulf Coastal Plain, Alabama And Mississippi, Linda C. Pace

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Fewer Quaternary palynological studies have been conducted in the Gulf Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States than In the northern United States and Canada, resulting in major gaps in the pollen record of this region. The existing studies display discrepancies in the chronology of the pine rise, appearance of the modem climatic regime and vegetation, and timing of the Hypsithermal. In order to fill a gap in the paleoecological data network of the Gulf Coastal Plain, pollen analysis, charcoal analysis, and sediment stratigraphic techniques were used to reconstruct the last 6500 years of Sweetbay Bog, Mississippi, and Minamac Bog, …

A New Young Diagrammatic Method For Kronecker Products Of O(N) And Sp(2m), Pan Feng, Shihai Dong, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

A new simple Young diagrammatic method for Kronecker products of O(n) and Sp(2m) is proposed based on the representation theory of Brauer algebras. A general procedure for the decomposition of the tensor products of representations for O(n) and Sp(2m) is outlined, which is similar to that for U(n) known as the Littlewood rules, together with trace contractions from a Brauer algebra and some modification rules given by King.

Of Rectangles And Centuries. A History Of The Use Of A Garden Pattern From Romanesque Europe To Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, David Dwayne Lewis Dec 1997

Of Rectangles And Centuries. A History Of The Use Of A Garden Pattern From Romanesque Europe To Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, David Dwayne Lewis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Settlers of New Orleans brought with them ideas of gardens that influenced the way they shaped gardens in the colony. Although the influence of those ideas has been acknowledged in studies of New Orleans gardens, specific connections between the ideas and gardens in New Orleans have not been made. To illuminate some of those connections, this study focuses on one garden pattern — a composition of long, rectangular planting beds -- that is common to at least fifty gardens in New Orleans and to European gardens dating from the ninth century. A developmental history that chronicles the use of the …

Predator Deterrence And 2,4-Dibromophenol Conservation By The Enteropneusts Saccoglossus Bromophenolosus And Protoglossus Graveolens, Cem Giray, Gary M. King

Faculty Publications

Saccoglossus bromophenolosus King et al., 1994 and Protoglossus graveolens Giray and King, 1996 contain high concentrations of 2,4-dibromophenol (DBP), the function of which is uncertain. Mature enteropneusts that were collected from the field and maintained in vitro without bromide retained DBP, which is inconsistent with active DBP secretion into the burrow environment. DBP was also conserved during field manipulations that decreased food availability in situ. Further, DBP did not deter predation in feeding experiments with the anomuran crab Pagurus longicarpus and the polychaetes Glycera dibranchiata, Nereis virens and Nepthys incisa. The hermit crabs fed on S. bromophenolosus readily, and in …

Chern-Simons States In Spin-Network Quantum Gravity, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Griego, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

In the context of canonical quantum gravity in terms of Ashtekar's new variables, it is known that there exists a state that is annihilated by all the quantum constraints and that is given by the exponential of the Chern-Simons form constructed with the Asthekar connection. We make a first exploration of the transform of this state into the spin-network representation of quantum gravity. The discussion is limited to trivalent nets with planar intersections. We adapt an invariant of tangles to construct the transform and study the action of the Hamiltonian constraint on it. We show that the first two coefficients …

This paper proves that, for every integernexceeding two, there is a numberN(n) such that every 3-connected matroid with at leastN(n) elements has a minor that is isomorphic to one of the following matroids: an (n+2)-point line or its dual, the cycle or cocycle matroid ofK3,n, the cycle matroid of a wheel withnspokes, a whirl of rankn, or ann-spike. A matroid is of the last type if it has ranknand consists ofnthree-point lines through a common point such that, for allkin {1,2,...,n-1}, the union of every set ofkof these lines has rankk+1. © 1997 Academic Press.

Large Quantum Gravity Effects: Backreaction On Matter, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Oct 1997

Large Quantum Gravity Effects: Backreaction On Matter, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We re-examine the large quantum gravity effects discovered by Ashtekar in the context of (2 + 1)-dimensional gravity coupled to matter. We study an alternative one-parameter family of coherent states of the theory in which the large quantum gravity effects on the metric can be diminished, at the expense of losing coherence in the matter sector. Which set of states is the one that occurs in nature will determine if the large quantum gravity effects are actually observable as wild fluctuations of the metric or rapid loss of coherence of matter fields. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

Effect Of Naturally Occurring Bromophenols On Sulfate Reduction And Ammonia Oxidation In Intertidal Sediments, C. Giray, G. M. King Sep 1997

Effect Of Naturally Occurring Bromophenols On Sulfate Reduction And Ammonia Oxidation In Intertidal Sediments, C. Giray, G. M. King

Faculty Publications

We examined the effect on ammonium oxidation and sulfate reduction of several brominated compounds [4-bromophenol, 2,4-dibromophenol (2,4-DBP), 2,6-dibromophenol and 2,4,6-tribromophenol] that occur naturally in enteropneusts. We compared rates of these processes with and without bromoorganics using bulk intertidal sediments and burrow wall sediments from 3 enteropneust species (2 containing 2,4-DBP and 1 containing 2,3,4-tribromopyrrole), a mollusc (Mya arenaria) and a polychaete (Nereis virens). Sulfate reduction in bulk sediment was unaffected by bromophenols at concentrations sediment, but was inhibited temporarily at 1 μmol cm-3. Sulfate reduction in burrow wall sediments differed from bulk sediments, but was not correlated with concentrations of …

Identification And Characterization Of Two Polymorphic Ya5 Alu Repeats, Santosh S. Arcot, Margaret M. Deangelis, Stephen T. Sherry, Aaron W. Adamson, Jane E. Lamerdin, Prescott L. Deininger, Anthony V. Carrano, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Two new polymorphic Alu elements (HS2.25 and HS4.14) belonging to the young (Ya5/8) subfamily of human-specific Alu repeats have been identified. DNA sequence analysis of both Alu repeats revealed that each Alu repeat had a long 3'-oligo-dA-rich tail (41 and 52 nucleotides in length) and a low level of random mutations. HS2.25 and HS4.14 were flanked by short precise direct repeats of 8 and 14 nucleotides in length, respectively. HS2.25 was located on human chromosome 13, and HS4.14 on chromosome 1. Both Alu elements were absent from the orthologous positions within the genomes of non-human primates, and were highly polymorphic …

These dimers form infinite stacks in the crystal stabilized by π-π interactions between the aromatic ring systems.

In Vivo Kinetics Of A Redox-Regulated Transcriptional Switch, Huangen Ding, Bruce Demple Aug 1997

In Vivo Kinetics Of A Redox-Regulated Transcriptional Switch, Huangen Ding, Bruce Demple

Faculty Publications

SoxR is a transcription activator governing a cellular response to superoxide and nitric oxide in Escherichia coli. SoxR protein is a homodimer, and each monomer has a redox-active [2Fe-2S] cluster. Oxidation and reduction of the [2Fe-2S] clusters can reversibly activate and inactivate SoxR transcriptional activity. Here, we use electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to follow the redox-switching process of SoxR protein in vivo. SoxR [2Fe-2S] clusters were in the fully reduced state during normal aerobic growth, but were completely oxidized after only 2-min aerobic exposure of the cells to superoxide-generating agents such as paraquat. The oxidized SoxR [2Fe-2S] clusters were rapidly …

Hall Effect In The Mixed State Of Moderately Clean Superconductors, I. Vekhter, A. Houghton Jul 1997

Hall Effect In The Mixed State Of Moderately Clean Superconductors, I. Vekhter, A. Houghton

Faculty Publications

The Hall conductivity in the mixed state of a clean (l ≫ ξ0) type-II s-wave-superconductor is determined from a microscopic calculation within a quasiclassical approximation. We find that below the superconducting transition the contribution to the transverse conductivity due to dynamical fluctuations of the order parameter is compensated by the modification of the quasiparticle contribution. In this regime the nonlinear behaviour of the Hall angle is governed by the change in the effective quasiparticle scattering rate due to the reduction in the density of states at the Fermi level. The connection with experimental results is discussed.
