Chemistry, Testing And Management Of Phosphorus And Zinc In Calcareous Louisiana Soils, Dustin L. Harrell Jan 2005

Chemistry, Testing And Management Of Phosphorus And Zinc In Calcareous Louisiana Soils, Dustin L. Harrell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Calcareous soils make up some of the most productive agriculture lands in Louisiana. Due to their minimal occurrence little research has been done on these soils. Understanding phosphorus (P) chemistry is necessary for environmentally sound management of these soils. In this study, P speciation was investigated using several chemical fractionation procedures as well as x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) and least-squares linear combination fitting (LCF) on five calcareous Louisiana soils of different geological origins. Phosphorus sorption isotherm parameters were determined and their relationships with other properties were evaluated. In addition, Zinc (Zn) lability due …

Speciation, Equilibrium Distribution And Kinetics Of Rainfall-Runoff Phosphorus In Adsorptive-Filtration Unit Operations And Processes, Jia Ma Jan 2005

Speciation, Equilibrium Distribution And Kinetics Of Rainfall-Runoff Phosphorus In Adsorptive-Filtration Unit Operations And Processes, Jia Ma

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the influence of hydrology on rainfall runoff phosphorus partitioning between aqueous and particulate-bound phase, and dissolved phosphorus speciation at the upper end of a Cementitious Porous Pavement (CPP) small urban watershed. This study also investigated particulate bound phosphorus temporal distribution during storm event and phosphorus equilibrium distribution on a wide gradation of solids captured by hydrodynamic separator after the storm completed. Results indicate that EMC of urban rainfall runoff phosphorus exceeds EPA water quality criteria, with majority of particulate-bound phosphorus while rainfall by itself contains non-comparable low concentration of phosphorus. Dissolved phosphorus was mainly H2PO4- and HPO4-2 …

The Effect Of Dietary Phosphorus Level And Phytase Supplementation On Growth Performance, Bone Breaking Strength, And Phosphorus Excretion In Broilers, Syrena Powell Jan 2005

The Effect Of Dietary Phosphorus Level And Phytase Supplementation On Growth Performance, Bone Breaking Strength, And Phosphorus Excretion In Broilers, Syrena Powell

LSU Master's Theses

This research was conducted to determine the effects of feeding different P levels with and without phytase supplementation on broiler growth performance, bone breaking strength (BBS), and P excretion. An experiment with 4 trials was conducted with 7,840 Ross x Ross straight run broilers. For each trial, 1,960 broilers were allotted on d 0 to 4 treatments with 7 replications per treatment with 70 broilers per replication. The broilers were fed a 4 period feeding program consisting of starter (0 to 14 d), grower (14 to 32 d), finisher (32 to 41 d), and withdrawal (41 to 50 d) periods. …

Assimilation And Removal Of Phosphorus Within The Marshland Upwelling System, Derek A. Evans Jan 2005

Assimilation And Removal Of Phosphorus Within The Marshland Upwelling System, Derek A. Evans

LSU Master's Theses

The marshland upwelling system (MUS) is an alternative onsite wastewater system that was developed to treat domestic wastewater derived from coastal communities. Previous studies have researched the systems ability to treat fecal coliforms and nitrogen. The objectives of this research were to (1) assess the treatment efficiency of the MUS for removing both total phosphorus and orthophosphate, (2) provide preliminary design and operational guidelines for phosphorus removal, and (3) develop a parameter to project longevity of the MUS for treating phosphorus. Performance efficiency was compared for a system which operated for 23 months located in Bayou Segnette State Park and …

Effect Of Phosphorus And Potassium Fertility On Fruit Quality And Growth Of Tabasco Pepper (Capsicum Frutescens) In Hydroponic Culture, Manuel Estuardo Aldana Jan 2005

Effect Of Phosphorus And Potassium Fertility On Fruit Quality And Growth Of Tabasco Pepper (Capsicum Frutescens) In Hydroponic Culture, Manuel Estuardo Aldana

LSU Master's Theses

Effects of P and K fertilization on Tabasco plant growth and fruit quality were evaluated in a preliminary experiment conducted in fall 2002; 4 levels of P (0.25, 1.0, 1.75, and 2.5 mM) and 4 levels of K (0.75, 1.75, 2.75, and 3.75 mM) in hydroponic culture with a factorial randomized design. The main growth experiment was conducted in spring/summer growing period of 2003. This experiment consisted of 8 treatments; 4 levels of P (P1 0.25, P2 1.25, P3 2.5, and P4 3.75 mM) and 4 levels of K (K1 0.25, K2 1.25, K3 2.5, and K4 3.75 mM). The …
