Crossover Considerations: Performing Three Works By Ludmila Ulehla, Phil Woods And Bill Dobbins, John M. Perrine

LSU Major Papers

When musicians prepare a piece of music for performance, they utilize various sources of background knowledge that are available to them. This knowledge can be organized into groups of stylistic attributes suited for the various genres that are in question. This process is made possible by the perspective that history provides. One can comprise a compendium of performance practices provided evidence exists of consistency throughout the style period being addressed. An exciting opportunity presents itself when dealing with the present time. The relationship between the collaborating performers of any music is a delicate one. This task is made challenging with …

The Effects Of Singing On Blood Pressure In Classically Trained Singers, Kimberly Jaye Broadwater Jan 2002

The Effects Of Singing On Blood Pressure In Classically Trained Singers, Kimberly Jaye Broadwater

LSU Major Papers

Blood pressure readings were taken in four normotensive, classically trained singers of varying age and experience. The results show changes during the systolic and diastolic phases of blood pressure measurements while singing. While systolic blood pressure changes were individualized and random, diastolic blood pressure changes generally showed a direct correlation to changes in intrathoracic pressure. Additional research using a larger subject base involving normotensive, hypertensive, and hypotensive populations is warranted.

A Conductor's Study Of George Rochberg's Three Psalm Settings, David Lawrence Jan 2002

A Conductor's Study Of George Rochberg's Three Psalm Settings, David Lawrence

LSU Major Papers

Contemporary choral music in general and George Rochberg’s in particular present challenges to the conductor well beyond the traditional repertoire including complex harmonies and rhythms, tone clusters, sprechstimme, and unconventional notation. In addition, the conductor must alter usual score preparation techniques and acquire a more detailed knowledge about differences in twentieth century music. He/she must learn the techniques of contemporary music through study in theory and analysis. The conductor can also take advantage of many available books and journals that offer insight into the study, rehearsal, and performance of this music. As the conductor acquires the necessary skill in twentieth …

Dynamic Econometric Modeling Of The U.S. Wheat Grain Market, Carlos Walter Robledo Jan 2002

Dynamic Econometric Modeling Of The U.S. Wheat Grain Market, Carlos Walter Robledo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Structural-time series models have not gained much ground in commodity market modeling despite the overwhelming popularity of time series approaches in forecasting and dynamic analyses. This dissertation contributes by applying developments in seasonal cointegration and structural-time series analysis (e.g., Zellner and Palm (1974); Hsiao (1997); Lee (1992); Franses and Kunst (1999); Ghysels and Osborn, 2001) to the study of agricultural commodity markets. The focus is on three research themes. The first theme investigates the role of cointegration and seasonal cointegration for market data, an issue considered timely because most applications assume deterministic seasonal components. The second issue breaks new ground …

"Los Motz E.L So": Words Melody, And Their Interaction In The Songs Of Folquet De Marseille, Nancy Ellen Washer Jan 2002

"Los Motz E.L So": Words Melody, And Their Interaction In The Songs Of Folquet De Marseille, Nancy Ellen Washer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Although the poems of the troubadours have been extensively studied almost since they were first composed and the troubadours themselves indicate that they tried to create interactions between the melodies and the words, the melodies and the interactions between the poems and melodies in the complete songs have been examined much less intensively. In this dissertation I delve into the songs of the late twelfth-century troubadour Folquet de Marseille whose thirteen songs surviving with their melodies provide a varied collection of a suitable size to permit intensive analysis of poetic and musical compositional practices and the interactions between the two. …

On Properties Of Linear Control Systems On Lie Groups, Fabiana Cardetti Jan 2002

On Properties Of Linear Control Systems On Lie Groups, Fabiana Cardetti

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this work we study controllability properties of linear control systems on Lie groups as introduced by Ayala and Tirao in [AT99]. A linear control system _x0006_Σ Lie group G is defined by x' = X(x) + Σkj=1 ujYj(x), where the drift vector field X is an infinitesimal automorphism, uj are piecewise constant functions, and the control vectors Yj are left-invariant vector fields. Properties for the flow of the infinitesimal automorphism X and for the reachable set defined by _x0006_Σ are presented in Chapter 3. Under a condition similar to the Kalman …
