The Systematics Of Nerodia Clarkii And Nerodia Fasciata, Patrick Allan Myer May 1988

The Systematics Of Nerodia Clarkii And Nerodia Fasciata, Patrick Allan Myer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The systematic relationship between the Gulf saltmarsh snake, Nerodia fasciata clarkii. and the freshwater subspecies, N. f. confluens. N. f. fasciata, and N. f. pictiventris, is re—evaluated using morphological characters that reflect head shape. Changes in character-states are analyzed from areas of contact into the populations of the freshwater forms. Beyond the narrow zones where intermediates are found there is no morphological evidence suggesting genetic introgression of clarkii genes into the freshwater populations. Discriminant analysis of the head scale measurements also suggests the significant division of the saltmarsh and freshwater forms. Ecological analysis reveals that interbreeding between the forms is …

Aspects Of Vowel Perception By Normal Hearing And Hearing Impaired Listeners., Joan Marie Besing Jan 1988

Aspects Of Vowel Perception By Normal Hearing And Hearing Impaired Listeners., Joan Marie Besing

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of durational differences on the identification of vowel tokens was studied using ten normal hearing and six hearing impaired subjects. Stimuli were synthetically generated and varied in duration of the steady state, durations of the initial and final transitions and F1/F2/F3 location. Listeners were required to identify the given vowel token from a set of ten possible alternatives. The results from the normal hearing group supported the established effects of duration on the perception of vowels. However, these effects were different depending on the frequency locations of F1/F2/F3. Further, changes in the duration of the initial transition had …

Prediction Of Methane Solubility In Geopressured Brine Solutions By Application Of Perturbation Theory., Yangtzu Chao Jan 1988

Prediction Of Methane Solubility In Geopressured Brine Solutions By Application Of Perturbation Theory., Yangtzu Chao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ability to predict methane solubility in underground reservoirs is essential to eventual exploitation of geothermal-geopressured reservoirs as an alternate energy source. In this study, second-order Leonard-Barker-Henderson perturbation theory was applied to brine solutions containing H$\sb2$O, CH$\sb4$, C$\sb2$H$\sb6$, CO$\sb2$, and NaCl to develop a fundamentally-based thermodynamic approach to handle more effectively the broad temperature and pressure ranges encountered in underground reservoirs, and to include the effect of the presence of various salts and other gases on methane solubility. The apparent ideal solution fugacity, f$\sbsp{i}{o\sp\prime}$, for each solute gas is proposed and developed through perturbation theory as a direct measure of …

Characterization Of The Pulpwood Procurement Environment Of Northwest Louisiana With A Geographic Information System., Richard William Brinker Jan 1988

Characterization Of The Pulpwood Procurement Environment Of Northwest Louisiana With A Geographic Information System., Richard William Brinker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An analysis of the pulpwood procurement environment was made to describe and model forest land area, ownership patterns, timber production, forest inventory, and the transportation network of 13 parishes in the northwest region of Louisiana. Pulpwood delivered to a pulpmill accounts for approximately 50 percent of pulp production costs. The cost of delivered pulpwood is a function of the mode of transportation, distance from the mill, competition for stumpage, and quality of the transportation network. A data base is developed from wood usage requirements, pulpmill and wood concentration yard locations, location of forested areas and their relative volumes. Areas of …

Nature And Heritability Of Resistance To Sugarcane Smut Caused By Ustilago Scitaminea., Chih-Ping Chao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The nature of resistance to smut, caused by Ustilago scitaminea Syd., was evaluated in 15 sugarcane, interspecific Saccharum hybrid, clones with smut reactions ranging from resistant to highly susceptible. No association was found between smut infection level and bud traits including length, width, length x width, shape, flange, groove, germination type, germination times, and shoot growth rates. In two clones, inoculation of plants with initial shoot lengths up to 6 cm resulted in high smut infection levels, whereas inoculation of ungerminated buds or plants with longer shoots resulted in low infection levels. Resistance to systematic infection was detected in plants …

Query Processing On The Entity-Relationship Graph Based Relational Database Systems., Hung-Pin Chen Jan 1988

Query Processing On The Entity-Relationship Graph Based Relational Database Systems., Hung-Pin Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An ERG (Entity-Relationship Graph) can be used to provide a semantic structure to a relational database system. An ERG is defined by local regions. A local region contains two nodes of entity types and a node of relationship type. The semantic constraints of the database represented by the ERG (Entity-Relationship Graph) can be used to enforce the global integrity of the database system. A query is mapped onto the ERG to obtain an ERQG (Entity-Relationship Query Graph). This mapping can be specified by the user by navigating the database or automatically allocated by the system via a universal relation interface. …

Natural And Artificial Regeneration Of Baldcypress (Taxodium Distichum (L.) Rich.) In The Barataria And Lake Verret Basins Of Louisiana., William Henry Conner Jan 1988

Natural And Artificial Regeneration Of Baldcypress (Taxodium Distichum (L.) Rich.) In The Barataria And Lake Verret Basins Of Louisiana., William Henry Conner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Louisiana contains the largest volume of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.) timber in the United States, with 70% of the volume located in the south central part of the state. Baldcypress regeneration was studied in the Barataria and Verret Basins during 1982-1987. Overall, natural regeneration was poor in both basins. There was some recruitment during the dry years 1984 and 1986 but these seedlings did not grow tall enough to survive subsequent flooding. Coppice regeneration in logged areas was excellent after logging, but a majority of the sprouts died in succeeding years. In three projects where baldcypress seedlings were planted …

Genetics Of Callus Formation And Plant Regeneration In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Qi Ren Chu Jan 1988

Genetics Of Callus Formation And Plant Regeneration In Rice (Oryza Sativa L.)., Qi Ren Chu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Callus formation and plant regeneration rates for both immature panicle and anther culture of rice were studied in several populations, including parents, F$\sb1$, F$\sb2$, F$\sb3$, and backcrossed generations. Significant genotypic differences in regeneration and callus formation rates were observed. In immature panicle culture, F$\sb1$'s generally produced rates of regeneration close to their high parents. Generation mean analysis of regeneration rates revealed the importance of dominance effects (d) and epistatic effects (aa, ad, and dd) in immature panicle culture. In contrast, production of callus by 12 F$\sb1$ hybrids in another culture was closely related to the low parents, suggesting that suppression …

Floral Ontogeny And Histogenesis In Leguminosae., Kittie Sue Derstine Jan 1988

Floral Ontogeny And Histogenesis In Leguminosae., Kittie Sue Derstine

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Inflorescence organogeny and floral initiation are investigated topographically (using scanning electron microscopy) and histogenetically in Acacia baileyana (Mimosoideae) and Lupinus havardii (Papilionoideae). Floral ontogeny is investigated topographically in Parkinsonia aculeata (Caesalpinioideae). The paniculate racemes of A. baileyana are constructed of first- and second-order inflorescence meristems. Each produces first-order and second-order bracts, respectively, in acropetal order. Each of the former bracts subtends one second-order inflorescence meristem while the latter bract type subtends a single flower. The radially symmetrical floral meristem of A. baileyana produces calyx members in helical order and corolla members simultaneously with a precocious terminal carpel. Common stamen primordia …

A Comparison And Application Of Select Teaching Methods For The Flute By Henri Alt\`Es, Paul Taffanel - Philippe Gaubert, Marcel Moyse, And Trevor Wye., David Eugene Etienne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Since c.1860, the Paris Conservatoire has employed a succession of master artist/teachers of the silver Boehm flute. This tradition is so distinctive that the term "French Flute School" is used to refer to flute teachers and pupils of the Paris Conservatoire. Certain exponents of the French Flute School have written classic method books which have remained important to Boehm flute players throughout the world. The style and quality of flute literature changed significantly from the mid-nineteenth century to the present and when musical style changed so did demands on the performer. Although studies and exercises are not intended for public …

The relation between life events and psychological distress has been a subject of considerable interest in recent years. Most previous research has focused on major life events. The present study investigated the role of minor daily events and their relation to symptoms of depression, anxiety and global psychological distress. Two scoring approaches were used for both types of events; frequency of occurrence and the subjective weighting of each occurrence. A total of one hundred and ninety one subjects volunteered from the community. Each subject completed the daily stress scale each day for seven consecutive days. At the end of the …

A Behavioral Test Of The Affinity-Seeking Model: Nonverbal Tactics Among Strangers And Acquaintances., Dominique Marie Gendrin Jan 1988

A Behavioral Test Of The Affinity-Seeking Model: Nonverbal Tactics Among Strangers And Acquaintances., Dominique Marie Gendrin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research examined the Affinity-Seeking model devised by Bell and Daly (1984). Two components of the model were considered: preinteraction expectancies constraining a social encounter and the competency of the individual as an affinity-seeker. It was hypothesized that strangers would approach a friendly target through the reciprocity strategy and an unfriendly target through the compensatory strategy by increasing behavioral cues of immediacy (e.g., eye-gaze, smiling/laughter, verbalizations, and proximity). It was hypothesized, on the other hand, that acquaintances would not increase their behavioral involvement in view of a friendly expectancy while they would compensate for an unfriendly one. The findings revealed …

The Effects Of Linguistic And Non-Linguistic Context On The Deictic Interpretation Of Noun Phrases., Daniel George Foster Jan 1988

The Effects Of Linguistic And Non-Linguistic Context On The Deictic Interpretation Of Noun Phrases., Daniel George Foster

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Definite noun phrases (NP's), proper names, and third person pronouns are not consistently interpreted deictically. Furthermore, these three types and first and second person pronouns, or potentially deictic NP's, whether deictic or not, may be interpreted as pertaining to the universe of discourse that each text creates, the situation of writing in which the text is created, or the attitudes of the writer towards the referent of a particular NP. Universe of discourse NP's include generic and descriptive NP's and those deictic in the most basic sense (i.e. those that point within the spatio-temporal field of the world external to …

Self-Referential Play Gone Wild: A Case For The "Roman Bourgeois" As Metafiction., Dianne Paula Guenin-Lelle Jan 1988

Self-Referential Play Gone Wild: A Case For The "Roman Bourgeois" As Metafiction., Dianne Paula Guenin-Lelle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Roman bourgeois is a text which has resisted traditional modes of criticism, and thus it has confounded critics who simply did not know what to make of this hybrid work. It has been generally considered to be a novel which lacks coherence and literary merit, and spells the end of the cycle of seventeenth-century comic novels. This study proposes that the Roman bourgeois be considered as a metafictional text, where textual "anomalies" could be considered as "positive" attributes since they draw attention to the fictional framework and the fiction-making process of the novel. The novel operates according to the …

High Temperature Coal-Gas Desulfurization: Kinetic Evaluation Of A Zinc Ferrite Sorbent., Gary D. Focht Jan 1988

High Temperature Coal-Gas Desulfurization: Kinetic Evaluation Of A Zinc Ferrite Sorbent., Gary D. Focht

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thermogravimetric techniques were used to monitor the weight of cylindrical zinc ferrite extrudes in order to examine the sulfidation and regeneration kinetics. The reaction of zinc ferrite with H$\sb2$S (sulfidation) was studied over a temperature range of 573-973 K in gas streams containing 0.6-3 mol% hydrogen sulfide. Reduced zinc ferrite, ZnO plus Fe$\sb3$O$\sb4$, is capable of complete sulfidation from 873-973 K except at conditions where the iron oxide in the sorbent is reduced to FeO, in which case sulfidation does not go to completion. The sulfidation reaction is controlled by internal diffusion and mass transfer from the bulk gas phase …

Application Of Entropy Theory To Multivariate Hydrologic Analysis. (Volumes I And Ii)., Predrag Felix Krstanovic

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation discusses the multivariate hydrologic analysis by the entropy theory. It is divided into two major parts. The first part (Volume I) examines hydrologic frequency analysis, specifically rainfall-runoff modeling and the design of rainfall networks. The second part (Volume II) develops two flood forecasting models: the univariate streamflow model, and the bivariate rainfall-runoff model. The hydrologic frequency analysis focuses on three topics: multivariate normal distribution, multivariate exponential distribution and multivariate exponential distribution and multivariate mixed distributions. Many forms of univariate, bivariate and multivariate normal distributions are derived by using the principle of maximum entropy (POME), emphasizing the serial dependency …

Ada Rehan: American Actress (1857-1916). (Volumes I And Ii)., Aileen Alana Hendricks-Wenck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although Ada Rehan (1857-1916) achieved international fame as America's representative actress, rivaling Ellen Terry during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, historians have forgotten her. After beginning in 1872 to perform with her sister, Kate, and brother-in-law, Oliver Doud Byron, in their company and, later, in Mrs. Louisa Lane Drew's Arch Street Theatre Company (1873-75), Ada moved upward to ingenue roles in Barney Macauley's company (1875-76). Then she assumed leading parts with John W. Albaugh's company (1876-79), followed by a few months supporting Fanny Davenport. Finally, she advanced to a position in one of the most prominent theatres in …

Semantic Constraint Modeling In Database Using The Applicative Data Language., Herman Hai-Lou Lee Jan 1988

Semantic Constraint Modeling In Database Using The Applicative Data Language., Herman Hai-Lou Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There is a growing need to incorporate database integrity subsystems into large information systems in engineering design environments and real-time control and monitoring environments. The objectives of the integrity subsystem are to provide a user interface for constraint specification, to compile the specification into enforcement strategies, and to check data integrity at both compile-time and run-time. The approach proposed by this research is to develop the conceptual view of the database using the Entity Relationship Model (ERM). Users' queries and semantic constraints can be specified by an ER-based data language, the Applicative Data Language (ADL). Any ADL constraint specification is …

Minimum Time Motion Of A Robotic Manipulator., Heon Hwang Jan 1988

Minimum Time Motion Of A Robotic Manipulator., Heon Hwang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation treats the modeling, analysis, and trajectory control of a robotic manipulator to execute specified point-to-point tasks. The relative coordinate representation of kinematic and dynamic variables is defined using vectors and matrices based on coordinate transformations. A kinematic modeling of a manipulator is performed using Denavit-Hartenberg link parameters. For given end-effector information (location and orientation), a stable and efficient iterative numerical algorithm for a joint solution is developed. A modified general Gauss elimination and a direct minimum search are combined with other refinements to yield fast convergency and stable results. This algorithm can be used as a routine solution …

The study investigated: (1) the extent to which his speeches addressed the racial issue, (2) the consistency of his position, and (3) the nature and appropriateness of his appeals. State newspapers were examined to locate his speeches, which were categorized by period and subject. Examination of the data revealed four specific racial exigencies to which Hampton responded: (1) the loss of black labor (1865-66), (2) black suffrage (1867-68), …

Coulomb States In Atoms And Solids., Darren Mark Ortalano Jan 1988

Coulomb States In Atoms And Solids., Darren Mark Ortalano

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, an empirical quantum defect approach to describe the valence excitons of the rare gas solids is developed. These Coulomb states are of s-symmetry and form a hydrogen-like series which converges to the bottom of the lowest conduction band. A non-zero quantum defect is found for all of the excitons of neon, argon and xenon. For these systems, then, there exists, in addition to the screened Coulombic component, a non-Coulombic component to the total exciton binding energy. The Wannier formalism is, therefore, inappropriate for the excitons of Ne, Ar and Xe. From the sign of the quantum defect, …
