Learning–Assisted Constraint Filtering To Enhance Power System Optimization Performance, Fouad Hasan
Learning–Assisted Constraint Filtering To Enhance Power System Optimization Performance, Fouad Hasan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Machine learning (ML) is a powerful tool that provides meaningful insights for operators to make fast and efficient decisions by analyzing data from power systems. ML techniques have great potential to assist in solving optimization problems within a shorter time frame and with less computational burden. AC optimal power flow (ACOPF), dynamic economic dispatch (D-ED), and security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) are the three energy management optimization functions studied in this dissertation. ACOPF is solved every 5~15 minutes. Because of the nonconvex and complex nature of ACOPF, solving this problem for large systems is computationally expensive and time-consuming. Classification and regression …

Machine-Learning Approaches For Developing An Autograder For High School-Level Cs-For-All Initiatives, Sirazum Munira Tisha
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Most existing autograders used for grading programming assignments are based on unit testing, which is tedious to implement for programs with graphical output and does not allow testing for other code aspects, such as programming style or structure. We present a novel autograding approach based on machine learning that can successfully check the quality of coding assignments from a high school-level CS-for-all computational thinking course. For evaluating our autograder, we graded 2,675 samples from five different assignments from the past three years, including open-ended problems from different units of the course curriculum. Our autograder uses features based on lexical analysis …

Visual Analytics And Modeling Of Materials Property Data, Diwas Bhattarai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Due to significant advancements in experimental and computational techniques, materials data are abundant. To facilitate data-driven research, it calls for a system for managing and sharing data and supporting a set of tools for effective data analysis and modeling. Generally, a given material property M can be considered as a multivariate data problem. The dimensions of M are the values of the property itself, the conditions (pressure P, temperature T, and multi-component composition X) that control the concerned property, and relevant metadata I (source, date).
Here we present a comprehensive database considering both experimental and computational sources …

Light-Weight Structural Optimization Through Biomimicry, Machine Learning, And Inverse Design, Adithya Challapalli
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In load-bearing lightweight architectures, cellular materials were frequently utilized. While octahedron, tetrahedron, and octet truss lattice truss were built for lightweight architectures with stretching and flexural dominance, it can be believed that new cells could easily be designed that might perform much better than the present ones in terms of mechanical and architectural characteristics. Machine learning-based structure scouting and design improvisation for better mechanical performance is a growing field of study. Additionally, biomimicry—the science of imitating nature’s elements—offers people a wealth of resources from which to draw motivation as they work to create a better quality of life.
Here, utilizing …

Machine Learning Assisted Discovery Of Shape Memory Polymers And Their Thermomechanical Modeling, Cheng Yan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As a new class of smart materials, shape memory polymer (SMP) is gaining great attention in both academia and industry. One challenge is that the chemical space is huge, while the human intelligence is limited, so that discovery of new SMPs becomes more and more difficult. In this dissertation, by adopting a series of machine learning (ML) methods, two frameworks are established for discovering new thermoset shape memory polymers (TSMPs). Specifically, one of them is performed by a combination of four methods, i.e., the most recently proposed linear notation BigSMILES, supplementing existing dataset by reasonable approximation, a mixed dimension (1D …
Computer Simulations Of Diffusional Isotope Effects And Dynamical Properties Of Silicate Melts, Haiyang Luo
Computer Simulations Of Diffusional Isotope Effects And Dynamical Properties Of Silicate Melts, Haiyang Luo
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Silicate melts have served as transport agents in the chemical and thermal evolution of Earth. Diffusional isotope effect in silicate melts is the key to interpret isotope variations in lots of geological samples. Isotopic mass dependence of diffusion is commonly expressed as (Di/Dj)=(mj/mi)^β, where Di and Dj are diffusion coefficients of two isotopes whose masses are mi and mj. However, how the dimensionless empirical parameter β depends on temperature, pressure, and composition remains poorly constrained. Viscosity and electrical conductivity are two fundamental dynamical properties of silicate melts needed to constrain melt distribution in Earth's interior but remain unclear for most …

Data-Driven And Model-Based Methods With Physics-Guided Machine Learning For Damage Identification, Zhiming Zhang
Data-Driven And Model-Based Methods With Physics-Guided Machine Learning For Damage Identification, Zhiming Zhang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Structural health monitoring (SHM) has been widely used for structural damage diagnosis and prognosis of a wide range of civil, mechanical, and aerospace structures. SHM methods are generally divided into two categories: (1) model-based methods; (2) data-driven methods. Compared with data-driven SHM, model-based methods provide an updated physics-based numerical model that can be used for damage prognosis when long-term data is available. However, the performance of model-based methods is susceptible to modeling error in establishing the numerical model, which is usually unavoidable due to model simplification and omission. The major challenge of data-driven SHM methods lies in data insufficiency, e.g., …
Towards Optimizing Quality Assurance Outcomes Of Knowledge-Based Radiation Therapy Treatment Plans Using Machine Learning, Phillip Douglas Hardenbergh Wall
Towards Optimizing Quality Assurance Outcomes Of Knowledge-Based Radiation Therapy Treatment Plans Using Machine Learning, Phillip Douglas Hardenbergh Wall
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Knowledge-based planning (KBP) techniques have been shown to provide improvements in plan quality, consistency, and efficiency for advanced radiation therapies such as volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT). While the potential clinical benefits of KBP methods are generally well known, comparatively less is understood regarding the impact of using these systems on resulting plan complexity and pre-treatment quality assurance (QA) measurements, especially for in-house KBP systems. Therefore, the overarching purpose of this work was to assess QA implications with using an in-house KBP system and explore data-driven methods for mitigating increased plan complexity and QA error rates without compromising dosimetric plan …

The Importance Of Landscape Position Information And Elevation Uncertainty For Barrier Island Habitat Mapping And Modeling, Nicholas Matthew Enwright
The Importance Of Landscape Position Information And Elevation Uncertainty For Barrier Island Habitat Mapping And Modeling, Nicholas Matthew Enwright
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Barrier islands provide important ecosystem services, including storm protection and erosion control to the mainland, habitat for fish and wildlife, and tourism. As a result, natural resource managers are concerned with monitoring changes to these islands and modeling future states of these environments. Landscape position, such as elevation and distance from shore, influences habitat coverage on barrier islands by regulating exposure to abiotic factors, including waves, tides, and salt spray. Geographers commonly use aerial topographic lidar data for extracting landscape position information. However, researchers rarely consider lidar elevation uncertainty when using automated processes for extracting elevation-dependent habitats from lidar data. …
Machine Learning Tools For Optimization Of Fuel Consumption At Signalized Intersections In Connected/Automated Vehicles Environment, Saleh Ragab Mousa
Machine Learning Tools For Optimization Of Fuel Consumption At Signalized Intersections In Connected/Automated Vehicles Environment, Saleh Ragab Mousa
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Researchers continue to seek numerous techniques for making the transportation sector more sustainable in terms of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Among the most effective techniques is Eco-driving at signalized intersections. Eco-driving is a complex control problem where drivers approaching the intersections are guided, over a period of time, to optimize fuel consumption. Eco-driving control systems reduce fuel consumption by optimizing vehicle trajectories near signalized intersections based on information of the SpaT (Signal Phase and Timing). Developing Eco-driving applications for semi-actuated signals, unlike pre-timed, is more challenging due to variations in cycle length resulting from fluctuations in traffic demand. …
Compiler And Runtime Optimization Techniques For Implementation Scalable Parallel Applications, Zahra Khatami
Compiler And Runtime Optimization Techniques For Implementation Scalable Parallel Applications, Zahra Khatami
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The compiler is able to detect the data dependencies in an application and is able to analyze the specific sections of code for parallelization potential. However, all of these techniques provided by a compiler are usually applied at compile time, so they rely on static analysis, which is insufficient for achieving maximum parallelism and desired application scalability. These compiler techniques should consider both the static information gathered at compile time and dynamic analysis captured at runtime about the system to generate a safe parallel application. On the other hand, runtime information is often speculative. Solely relying on it doesn't guarantee …

Accelerated parallel computing techniques using devices such as GPUs and Xeon Phis (along with CPUs) have proposed promising solutions of extending the cutting edge of high-performance computer systems. A significant performance improvement can be achieved when suitable workloads are handled by the accelerator. Traditional CPUs can handle those workloads not well suited for accelerators. Combination of multiple types of processors in a single computer system is referred to as a heterogeneous system. This dissertation addresses tuning and scheduling issues in heterogeneous systems. The first section presents work on tuning scientific workloads on three different types of processors: multi-core CPU, Xeon …
Context Aware Textual Entailment, Soha Arab-Khazaeli
Context Aware Textual Entailment, Soha Arab-Khazaeli
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In conversations, stories, news reporting, and other forms of natural language, understanding requires participants to make assumptions (hypothesis) based on background knowledge, a process called entailment. These assumptions may then be supported, contradicted, or refined as a conversation or story progresses and additional facts become known and context changes. It is often the case that we do not know an aspect of the story with certainty but rather believe it to be the case; i.e., what we know is associated with uncertainty or ambiguity. In this research a method has been developed to identify different contexts of the input raw …

This work describes the design and development of an optical, Computer Vision (CV) based sensor for use as a Position Reference System (PRS) in Dynamic Positioning (DP). Using a combination of robotics and CV techniques, the sensor provides range and heading information to a selected reference object. The proposed optical system is superior to existing ones because it does not depend upon special reflectors nor does it require a lengthy set-up time. This system, the Computer Vision and Inertial Position Reference Sensor System (CVIPRSS, pronounced \nickname), combines a laser rangefinder, infrared camera, and a pan--tilt unit with the robust TLD …
The Gaussian Radon Transform For Banach Spaces, Irina Holmes
The Gaussian Radon Transform For Banach Spaces, Irina Holmes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The classical Radon transform can be thought of as a way to obtain the density of an n-dimensional object from its (n-1)-dimensional sections in diff_x001B_erent directions. A generalization of this transform to infi_x001C_nite-dimensional spaces has the potential to allow one to obtain a function de_x001C_fined on an infi_x001C_nite-dimensional space from its conditional expectations. We work within a standard framework in in_x001C_finite-dimensional analysis, that of abstract Wiener spaces, developed by L. Gross. The main obstacle in infinite dimensions is the absence of a useful version of Lebesgue measure. To overcome this, we work with Gaussian measures. Specifically, we construct Gaussian measures …
On Identifying Critical Nuggets Of Information During Classification Task, David Sathiaraj
On Identifying Critical Nuggets Of Information During Classification Task, David Sathiaraj
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In large databases, there may exist critical nuggets - small collections of records or instances that contain domain-specific important information. This information can be used for future decision making such as labeling of critical, unlabeled data records and improving classification results by reducing false positive and false negative errors. In recent years, data mining efforts have focussed on pattern and outlier detection methods. However, not much effort has been dedicated to finding critical nuggets within a data set. This work introduces the idea of critical nuggets, proposes an innovative domain-independent method to measure criticality, suggests a heuristic to reduce the …

Particulate processes have been widely involved in various industries and most products in the chemical industry today are manufactured as particulates. Previous research and practise illustrate that the final product quality can be influenced by particle properties such as size and shape which are related to operating conditions. Online characterization of these particles is an important step for maintaining desired product quality in particulate processes. Image-based characterization method for the purpose of monitoring and control particulate processes is very promising and attractive. The development of a digital image-based framework, in the context of this research, can be envisioned in two …
Resolving Pronominal Anaphora Using Commonsense Knowledge, Seyedeh Leili Javadpour
Resolving Pronominal Anaphora Using Commonsense Knowledge, Seyedeh Leili Javadpour
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Coreference resolution is the task of resolving all expressions in a text that refer to the same entity. Such expressions are often used in writing and speech as shortcuts to avoid repetition. The most frequent form of coreference is the anaphor. To resolve anaphora not only grammatical and syntactical strategies are required, but also semantic approaches should be taken into consideration. This dissertation presents a framework for automatically resolving pronominal anaphora by integrating recent findings from the field of linguistics with new semantic features. Commonsense knowledge is the routine knowledge people have of the everyday world. Because such knowledge is …

Knowledge-Based Methods For Automatic Extraction Of Domain-Specific Ontologies, Janardhana R. Punuru
Knowledge-Based Methods For Automatic Extraction Of Domain-Specific Ontologies, Janardhana R. Punuru
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Semantic web technology aims at developing methodologies for representing large amount of knowledge in web accessible form. The semantics of knowledge should be easy to interpret and understand by computer programs, so that sharing and utilizing knowledge across the Web would be possible. Domain specific ontologies form the basis for knowledge representation in the semantic web. Research on automated development of ontologies from texts has become increasingly important because manual construction of ontologies is labor intensive and costly, and, at the same time, large amount of texts for individual domains is already available in electronic form. However, automatic extraction of …
Learning Discrete Hidden Markov Models From State Distribution Vectors, Luis G. Moscovich
Learning Discrete Hidden Markov Models From State Distribution Vectors, Luis G. Moscovich
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are probabilistic models that have been widely applied to a number of fields since their inception in the late 1960’s. Computational Biology, Image Processing, and Signal Processing, are but a few of the application areas of HMMs. In this dissertation, we develop several new efficient learning algorithms for learning HMM parameters. First, we propose a new polynomial-time algorithm for supervised learning of the parameters of a first order HMM from a state probability distribution (SD) oracle. The SD oracle provides the learner with the state distribution vector corresponding to a query string. We prove the correctness …
Machine Learning Techniques For Efficient Query Processing In Kowledge Base Systems, Kevin Paul Grant
Machine Learning Techniques For Efficient Query Processing In Kowledge Base Systems, Kevin Paul Grant
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation we propose a new technique for efficient query processing in knowledge base systems. Query processing in knowledge base systems poses strong computational challenges because of the presence of combinatorial explosion. This arises because at any point during query processing there may be too many subqueries available for further exploration. Overcoming this difficulty requires effective mechanisms for choosing from among these subqueries good subqueries for further processing. Inspired by existing works on stochastic logic programs, compositional modeling and probabilistic heuristic estimates we create a new, nondeterministic method to accomplish the task of subquery selection for query processing. Specifically, …
