The idea of a “white soul” and the protection of its purity was prolific during William Faulkner’s adolescence in the late 1800s and early 1900s, which is why he feared the establishment of a hybrid mix of races, especially one that tarnished whiteness. This thesis exams whiteness in Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! and The Hamlet. The findings on this thesis indicate that only white trash can fix the problem that is white trash, which means that white trash is not even safe from itself. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the effect of tablet computer applications and the reading skills of students with autism. Two subjects diagnosed with autism selected by using a convenient sampling method participated in this study. A single subject ABA design was used for collecting data regarding phonemic identification, letter identification, letter discrimination, ap.d sight word identification. In preserving The Wife 's Lament, Wulf and Eadwacer, and Beowulf's battle scene with Grendel's mother, Christian poets and scribes preserved much more than just the literature of Anglo-Saxon England. They recorded the feminine voice, a rare perspective emerging from a society founded principally on the fundamentals of warfare and male dominance. The women's songs stand as testaments to the strife and discord women suffered as a consequence of their husbands' participation in blood feud. This thesis examines Geoffrey Chaucer’s pioneering work as a distinctly English poet who wrote against the grain of French literary influence in the Middle Ages. Analyzing works such as The Parlement of Fowls and The Canterbury Tales, this thesis marks Chaucer as an English original, writing on everything from love and class to literature and politics. Furthermore, it argues Chaucer’s influence in making Britain into a more mature nation distinct from mainland Europe, and discusses how The Parlement of Fowls prepared Chaucer for his future writing.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine characters caught up in a transformation of identity: either a transfiguration or a transmogrification. Through the lens of fantasy, I sought to explore the trials of these characters in an exaggerated fashion that allowed me to take familiar questions and themes and attempt to make them new. This thesis combines primary sources about the Nomini Hall plantation and archaeological research of the land to create an interpretation that consolidates and evaluates what is currently known about Nomini Hall’s colonial cultural landscape and how it was utilized. For the past two academic years, the chemistry division at Longwood University has implemented POGIL methodology in some sections of the general chemistry sequence for science majors. Initially we were interested in determining if students exposed to POGIL were more successful in general chemistry than those students that were not exposed to this teaching pedagogy. Subsequent studies compare conceptual learning outcomes of POGIL versus non-POGIL students and also try to determine if SAT and GALT scores are a good predictors of student success in general chemistry. With the FDA mandating that all foodstuff labels list the amount of trans fates within their product, it becomes necessary to have a rapid and reproducible method for quantifying trans content within foods. Research has led to the advent of an analytical method that utilizes attenuated total reflectance with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer to quantitatively measure trans fat in foodstuffs. The method is possible because of an infrared absorbance band at 966 cm that is unique to nutritional trans fats. This thesis analyzes the works of Wordsworth and Whitman, focusing on the manifestations of the poets’ language within a socio-cultural construct. The thesis highlights the ways in which the authors’ interactions with socio-cultural events, such as industrialization, impact the ways in which their parole interacts and at times conflicts with the underlying system of poetic tradition. Additionally, the study examines the ways in which Wordsworth and Whitman interact with two binary oppositions central to Romantic philosophy, the living or dead and the pastoral or industrial. Capsaicin is the molecule in peppers that produces a sensation of heat and pain when exposed to sensory nerve cells in the body. A series of ethylenediaminetetracetate bisamide chelates have been synthesized with regions selective for capsaicinoid binding to determine which functional groups increase overall binding strength. The initial lanthanide complexes bound capsaicinoids with moderate strength (approximately 105 M" 1). Additions to the bis-amide region of the chelating ligand aim to increase the selectivity of the lanthanide complex for capsaicinoids. Derivatives have been synthesized that contain aromatic rings and carbon chains to augment binding strength via the hydrophobic effect. Upon …

Counterfeit pharmaceuticals are an increasing trend in the world of criminal activity because the business of making fake pharmaceuticals is highly profitable. The scientific community needs to develop clear-cut methods of detection for counterfeit pharmaceuticals because this is an issue that affects human health and because the use of prescription drugs is so prevalent. This study used high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and fluorescence spectroscopy to produce qualitative and quantitative data about quinine, mefloquine and choloroquine. This thesis examines Obama’s reasons for not shifting trade during the recession. The author goes into depth about how business groups influence Obama and his decisions on trade policies.
