When One Is Enough: The One-Person Play, Patti Siberz
When One Is Enough: The One-Person Play, Patti Siberz
Senior Theses
The one-person play is educational. The solo drama provides a unique and intimate relationship between the character and the audience. That relationship sheds light on the character being portrayed and on a different time in history or place. Often the monodrama is biographical, a play written about a well-known person. Whether the play is about a famous person or a totally made up character, the audience will have a unique insight into the mind and the heart of that individual. I will examine some of the different formats that solo performers have used, the history of the one-person plays and …

The microRNA miR-7 is perfectly conserved from annelids to humans, and yet some of the genes that it regulates in Drosophila are not regulated in mammals. We have explored the role of lineage restricted targets, using Drosophila , in order to better understand the evolutionary significance of microRNA-target relationships. From studies of two well characterized developmental regulatory networks, we find that miR-7 functions in several interlocking feedback and feedforward loops, and propose that its role in these networks is to buffer them against perturbation. To directly demonstrate this function for miR-7, we subjected the networks to temperature fluctuation and found …

Location And Landscape In Literary Americanisms: H. L. Davis And F. Scott Fitzgerald, David T. Sumner

Well into the twentieth century, western American literature was still dismissed as regional or was boxed in by the genre expectations of pulp Westerns. This chapter focuses less on the causes of an eastern dismissal of western literature and more on what is unique about western literature, including how it reflects the larger western experience. Sumner looks at the particular Americanisms evident in the letters of the American West, using two short stories to make his argument: H. L. Davis’s Open Winter and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Babylon Revisited.
