Mental Health Disorders Among The Adolescent Population In Nigeria: An Integrative Review, Njideka Nkemjika Emenyi

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Mental illness is a public health crisis with extensive stigma that has been substantially neglected in Nigeria. The general belief in Nigeria is that mental illness originates from supernatural causes such as possession of evil spirits; hence, individuals with mental illness are left in the hands of “the gods” or traditional healers for help. The prevalence of mental health disorders is high amongst adolescents in Nigeria due to rapid biological, social, and psychological changes that increase their susceptibility to mental health complications. Despite the high prevalence of mental illness among Nigerian adolescents, mental health care access and utilization in this …

Breaking Diet Culture: Utilizing Anti-Dieting Messaging For Healthier Adolescents, Emily Elise Spurgin

Masters Theses

Every day, an adolescent is exposed to hundreds of outlets telling them their bodies are not good enough. With each one of these exposures, it does not take long before the young person starts to believe they are not enough. By incorporating anti-diet messaging into a young person’s everyday life, they are more likely to respond to harmful messaging with critical thinking, leading to healthier adolescents. Anti-diet “means standing against [our current] oppressive system, in all its sneaky, shape-shifting forms” (Harrison). Research shows that adolescents have little to no information provided to them on a daily basis that will help …

This study examined and identifies the characteristics of band programs that contribute to increased effectiveness through the utilization of one director for both middle and high school. Additionally, the musical qualities band students having the …
