Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education

Martin Dempsey, U.S. Army Ret. and Rubenstein Fellow at Duke University, and Ori Brafman, a Distinguished Teaching Fellow at UC Berkeley with research in distributed networks, have analyzed today’s leadership landscape. Popular press reviews of the 2017 book, Radical Inclusion, report broad implications for corporate leadership and organizational improvement. This review compares and contrasts Dempsey and Brafman’s leadership principles with implications and applications for international agricultural and extension education networks.

Evaluation has been identified as a critical pathway to meet the grand challenges facing agricultureto feed the world.Understanding evaluation models and practicesused in articles published in the Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education(JIAEE) allowedus to identify areas of focus, need, and improvement. This content analysisassessed JIAEEarticlespublished from 1994 to 2018 for evaluation methods implemented according to characteristics outlined by Stufflebeam and Coryn (2014). This study initially identified 384 possible articles for consideration. Upon further assessment,81 articles were identified asmaintainingcharacteristics appropriate for review.Of these articles, the majority (70%) did not specifically identify an evaluation approach, even though21% of all feature …

Extension, as a socially-based institution, must constantly evolve with society. This case study on the Global Forum for Rural Advisory Services uses social network theory to add to the literature on network emergence in the context of extension. The researchers explored how an extension network evolved in response to global agricultural issues. The use of a qualitative content analysis of the eight themes of the annual meeting of the network showed how the Forum changed in response to current events and regional needs. Agricultural crimes or farm theft,commonly referred to as praedial larceny throughout the Caribbean, impacts significantly on food security through high levelsof economic loss. This paper provides an overview of praedial larceny worldwide, losses in the Caribbean region and some evidence from Trinidad and Tobago where the situation is prevalent. Programmatic evaluation has become a common practice in international extension education. Evaluation has primarily been used to report the outputs, outcomes and impacts of extension efforts. Sometimes an evaluation is done for formative reasons, to make programmatic improvements, and most often for summative reasons, as a justification for further funding. The photo narrative process, derived from photovoice, combines photography and narrative expression about artifacts important to one’s way of life. This study adds to the knowledge base of Entrepreneurial Education (EE)in selected technical training institutes in Kenya.Using qualitative research inquiry, semi-structured interviews were conducted with aquestionguidebookand follow-up questioning. Data were collected from students, instructors,and administratorsselected through purposive sampling.Open and axial coding wasused to categorize the transcribed interview responses. The contribution of agricultural universities to long-term food security in developing countries is widely acknowledged. The extent to which these universities in each country are helping students develop the requisite competence to meet employment needs is unknown. The purpose of this study was to explore Haitian faculty members’ perceptions of student competence at graduation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 37 lecturers who taught at five of the major agricultural universities in Haiti. There is an increased demand from employers and communities forglobally competent individuals, yetonly 2.3% of Dale Bumpers Collegeof Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences (Bumpers College)students studied abroad in an agriculture-related program during the 2014 and 2015 academic year. This study used descriptive survey methods withUniversityof Arkansasundergraduate students enrolled in Fall 2017 Bumpers Collegecourses (n= 1,758) to determine their perceptions of international experiences. The study examined the knowledge of agriculture extension agents on professionalization in South West Nigeria. This was borne out of the need to improve and ensure a viable, effective and vibrant extension and advisory service delivery in the area. 301 public and 55 private extension agents were selected through a two-staged sampling procedure. A questionnaire was used to obtain data on their socio-economic characteristics, knowledge on professionalization and its components, these being analyzed using descriptive, t-test and tobit regression analyses. The purpose of this research was to identify how teaching at multiple institutions impacts social capital of faculty within the Haitian AET system. Putnam’s social capital framework was used in the current study. Social capital is developed based on relationships with others. Bonding social capital is homogenous; bridging social capital is heterogonous; linking social capital connects an individual with external resources. A mixed methods approach was used in order to accomplish the study’s objectives. The philosophical perspectives, including significant actors, events, and forces, that influenced and presaged the United States’ approach to international agricultural development are somewhat unclear. The purpose of this historical narrative, therefore, was to understand the key drivers responsible for forging the U.S. framework for technical agricultural assistance abroad, especially in its formative years. Demand-driven extension services have been promoted as a potential mechanism to improve governance quality and lead to better-served farmers. In this paper, we evaluate i) the extent to which demand-driven elements are present in extension services in developing countries, and ii) whether governance problems persist and why. We accomplish so by performing a qualitative analysis of the Modernizing Extension and Advisory Services (MEAS) country assessments, and find that, despite the adoption of demand-driven features, extension services are not fully participatory, transparent, accountable, equitable and responsive to needed farmers.

The study used descriptive research design to identify factors that explain persistence of BS Agriculture (BSA) students in the University of the Philippines Los Baños during their first year of college as they moved on to the next year level towards degree completion. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine agricultural livelihood vulnerability to climate change in Bluefields, Westmoreland, Jamaica based on the Livelihoods Vulnerability Index (LVI). Random sampling was used to select participants. Personal interviews were conducted with farmers using an instrument consisting of LVI components representing livelihood strategies, natural and physical assets, socio-demographic profile, social networks, water issues, food issues, natural disasters, and climate variability. LVI data were aggregated using an indexing approach to create scores for comparison across vulnerability components. Exploringlocally-designed Agricultural Education and Training (AET) programs provides opportunitiesfor the entire system of AET to improve. Recognizing this potential, researchers conducted a case study of the Centre d’Apprentissage et de Formation Professionnelle Post-Primaire (i.e.,Center for Post Primary Professional Training [CAFPPP]) located in Macenta, Guinea.The case study was completed in conjunction with a comprehensive program review and participant-engaged strategic planning process. Results illuminate CAFPPP facessignificant challenges, including (a) limited funding, (b) insufficient teacher and administrator training,(c) limited curricular scope,and (d)systematic challenges. Food insecurity is widespread in Haiti. The tertiary agricultureinstitutionshave the great challenge of educatingthe future professionals who will help in meeting the growth needs of the Haitian agriculturesector.The extent that faculty are prepared for the teaching roles is unknown. This study examined this topic using a basic qualitative study that consisted of interviews with 37 lecturers working at five leading agricultural universitiesin Haiti. Data were analyzed using a basic thematic analysis. Results revealed the majority of participants generally felt well-prepared for their academic roles. Study abroad experiences serve to enrich students’ educational experiences, granted these programs must be evaluated to assess educational effectiveness. The purpose of this qualitative study was toexamine Nicaraguan students’ perceptions of agriculture and future aspirations, before and after engaging in a four-day agricultural-based program. Graphic elicitation and arts-based projective techniques served as metrics to assess students’ perceptions.Four major themes, with six sub-themes emerged from the data: a) perceptions of agriculture (i.e., previous agriculture); b) strength through unity (i.e., unity; and ripple effect); c) aspirations (i.e., importance of education); d) value of experience (i.e., learning new things; and thankfulness).
