Accessibility Regulations And Tips For Reaching Older Adults And People With Disabilities, Debby Newman, Pam Prokop

Journal of Applied Communications

Providing accessibility to all audiences is not just the right thing to do - it is the law. As a group, communicators have a responsibility to create accessible resources for people with disabilities, whether this involves classroom materials and press releases or online meetings. While communicators are not lawyers, we need to understand the essence of the statutes, since the United States Census Bureau (2006) reports that there are 51 million Americans with disabilities. This article describes the laws' requirements and ways for federally funded land-grant institutions to meet the intent of those laws. These institutions need to meet the …

Sources And Channels Of Information Used By Educational Program Clients, Glenn D. Israel, Kristen M. Wilson Dec 2006

Sources And Channels Of Information Used By Educational Program Clients, Glenn D. Israel, Kristen M. Wilson

Journal of Applied Communications

Organizations that want to create change through educational programs need to engage clients in a process that makes use of existing communication networks. Most clients use a repertoire of sources and channels for becoming aware of, learning about, and making decisions about practice or technology adoption. This paper focuses on one group of clients served by Cooperative Extension - horse owners - to identify patterns in the sources and channels of information they use. Further, the association between sets of channels and sources is assessed, controlling for relevant client attributes. The results show that horse owners have four correlated sets …

Using Focus Groups To Develop An Extension Home Horticulture Public Radio Program, Courtney Meyers, Tracy Irani, Erin Eckhardt Dec 2006

Using Focus Groups To Develop An Extension Home Horticulture Public Radio Program, Courtney Meyers, Tracy Irani, Erin Eckhardt

Journal of Applied Communications

Since its creation in 1914, Cooperative Extension has evolved to include a variety of traditional and nontraditional program areas. To reach new clientele, Extension must create programs that appeal to more generalized audiences and that communicate public value. One area that has the potential to create public value with nonagriculturalists is home horticulture. The application of marketing analysis, planning, implementation, and management should be used to reach this audience and provide better service. The University of Florida Extension Service uses an integrated marketing communication (IMC) approach to convey the role Extension plays in the state and in local communities. One …

Musical Chairs: Preparing Extension Communication Units For Inevitable Change, Margaret Herring, Thomas Knecht, Ashley Wood, Carol Whatley, Erik Anderson, Ken Spelke

Journal of Applied Communications

What happens when a new university administration doesn't know what Extension does or why an Extension communication unit exists? In this paper, a group of Extension administrators and faculty examines several reasons university administrators might seek to downsize Extension services or eliminate their communication units. This paper identifies strengths inherent in communication units that will help university administrators understand the importance and contributions of Extension communicators. The paper also explores how to prepare a communication unit for inevitable change, especially if there will be one less chair at the table when the music stops.

This study describes the demographics of the population of current, active, U.S.-based agricultural communications practitioner respondents in the Association for Communication Excellence in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Life and Human Sciences (ACE) in an effort to gain a better understanding of membership demographics. In fall 2004, the researchers mailed questionnaires to 510 ACE members. Returned questionnaires were accepted through January 2005 and processed in the following months. The overall response rate was 35.1% (n = 179). Analysis of demographic results showed that the majority of U.S. respondents were female (58.8%, n = 104) and Caucasian (95%, n = 168). More …

What Are Agriculture Industry Professionals Trying To Tell Us? Implications For University-Level Agricultural Communications Curricula, David L. Doerfert, René P. Miller

Journal of Applied Communications

Two recent activities have solicited the input of professionals on the future of agricultural communications within the agriculture industry. This paper reexamines these industry-based information and research activities for potential themes that could impact the current and future direction of communications-related activities within the agriculture profession. A reexamination of the outcomes of these two activities may provide insight and guidance for curricular and degree changes being considered by university-level agricultural communications educators. The four themes identified and discussed in this article are as follows: (a) the rapidly changing communication needs, wants, and expectations of the agriculture industry; (b) the new …

During this exchange, nine University of Guelph students traveled to Florida for one week during their winter breaks and six University of Florida students traveled to Canada during their spring breaks. The exchanges took place in back-to-back weeks. Students met …

Newspaper Coverage Of The Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy Outbreak In The United States: A Content Analysis, Jamie M. King, D. Dwayne Cartmell Ii, Shelly Sitton

Journal of Applied Communications

Objectivity is a hallmark of good journalism. Objective news writing is particularly important when covering agricultural issues. In this study, researchers used the Hayakawa-Lowry news bias categories to examine the objectivity of news coverage of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) outbreak that occurred December 23, 2003, in the United States. The study looked at 149 articles published in USA Today, The Washington Post, and The Seattle Times, dating from the day of the outbreak to February 10, 2004, when the USDA concluded its investigation of the outbreak. Based on the findings, the three newspapers studied were more objective than judgmental …

This article focuses on an emerging technology called podcasting as a new source of Web audio news distribution. Podcasting derives from the words iPod (Apple Inc.'s MP3 audio player) and broadcasting. Audio content, such as news, is compressed into MP3 audio file format and can be automatically downloaded to a computer by subscribing to a Web site's RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. The audio file can be transferred to a portable MP3 player, which can be listened to at the user's convenience in just about any setting. The audio files can also be burned onto a CD-ROM and played in …

Journal of Applied Communications

The discovery of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the United States made an impact on the beef industry. Determining how the BSE outbreak was framed by the news media is significant because research indicates that media shape public perceptions. This study examined how several key newspapers framed the 2003 outbreak of BSE in the United States. Determining how the media framed this issue can help communicators ensure bias-free media coverage of similar issues in the future. The study followed established framing analysis categories identified from the literature. There were 149 articles identified in The Washington Post, The Seattle Times, and …

Roaming The Changing Theoretical Landscape Of Agricultural Communications, James F. Evans

Journal of Applied Communications

The author comments on the role and value of dozens of theories and models he has used during more than 50 years of teaching, research, and practice in agricultural communications. The changing usage of these theories reflects changes in the scholarly foundations and practice of agricultural communications and the other disciplines to which it relates. Looking ahead, the author identifies 13 clusters of underused, new, and otherwise potentially valuable theories he believes may strengthen the contributions of this field.

Community Leaders' Views On Water Quality Bmps In Kansas, Steve Hill, Terrie Clark, Ted Cable, Kris Boone, Pat Melgares

Journal of Applied Communications

Determining which strategic communications efforts can encourage environmentally sustainable behavior requires information on barriers to that behavior. To help assess a Kansas water quality program, researchers examined focus group data from community leaders interested in water issues. Working within the context of the theory of planned behavior and two broader conceptual frameworks, researchers found several major themes indicating support for a broad-based approach to water quality programs. Themes included concepts of home and place, awareness and understanding, relationships, ownership of issues, and money. Findings generally confirmed the need to emphasize multiple points at which intervention strategies can occur, including communication …
