Table For One, Food For Two: A Socio-Economic Perspective On American Obesity, Celestina Victoria Brunetti Nov 2013

Table For One, Food For Two: A Socio-Economic Perspective On American Obesity, Celestina Victoria Brunetti

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

Research indicates that obesity is linked to socio-economic factors and genetics. Both have an impact on whether a person is or becomes obese. The paper focuses on the impact of the change in food supply along with socio-economic factors, specifically access, time, and cost, and how these factors have affected the American obesity epidemic. This was assessed in part through a case study of the Smith Hill area of Providence, Rhode Island, a food desert that is comprised mainly of Americans near the poverty line, and the Wellspring La Jolla camp—a camp for overweight children from upper-middle class families. The …

A Research Proposal: Does The Glass Ceiling Show Signs Of Breaking In The 21st Century?, Sally A. Wilson

MBA Student Scholarship

Unfortunately, today women are still trying to prove themselves equal to men. Women are often over looked in many industries just due to the fact of being a woman. There are many negative assumptions regarding women. Some examples are: women cannot do a job meant for a man, women cannot work late hours due to children, women are too soft and don’t represent a strong leader in a top level position. It’s hard to even think that in the 21st century the glass ceiling is continuing to block women from entering and advancing in managerial and supervisory roles. Women have …

Effects Of Implementing School Wide Positive Behavioral Intervention And Supports In An Alternative School Setting, Erica Evans, Robert K. Gable Oct 2013

Effects Of Implementing School Wide Positive Behavioral Intervention And Supports In An Alternative School Setting, Erica Evans, Robert K. Gable

K-12 Education

In spite of research documenting the negative effects of punishment, most high schools and correctional facilities rely on punishment to establish order and compliance with rules and routines (Nelson, Sprague, Jolivette, Smith, & Tobin, 2009). One alternative to punitive consequences is School Wide Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (SWPBIS). Since research on the implementation of SWPBIS in correctional facilities is limited, this mixed method study evaluated the effects of the implementation of SWPBIS on problem behavior, academic achievement, and social behavior of students in a juvenile corrections facility. Stufflebeam’s evaluation model was used as a framework for the study (Stufflebeam …

Japanese Monetary Policy: The Effectiveness Of Quantitative Easing, Colin James Flynn Oct 2013

Japanese Monetary Policy: The Effectiveness Of Quantitative Easing, Colin James Flynn

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of Japanese monetary policy from 2001-2010. In 2001 the Bank of Japan, Japan’s central bank, began using an unconventional monetary policy tool known as quantitative easing. The desired effect of quantitative easing is to inject money directly into the country’s money supply. This is accomplished through the purchasing of commercial and private financial assets, mainly bonds, by the central bank of the participating country. This paper tests the hypothesis that when the value of the Japanese yen (JPY) is lowered versus the United States Dollar (USD) that the number of …

Does Social Media Affect Consumer Decision-Making?, Patarawadee Sema

MBA Student Scholarship

Does social media affect consumer decision-making? Social media becomes an important communication tool that people use to connect to other people or organization. A Foreign Affair: A Phenomenological Study Of Barriers To Adult Liberian Refugees' Success In The American College Classroom, Carla White Ellis

English as a Second Language Faculty Publications & Research

Liberia has survived a fourteen-year civil war. Within this time, many Liberians were forced to flee their countries and seek refuge. The United States and Liberia have held a long-standing friendly relationship; hence, there are thousands of Liberian refugees living within the United States. The educational issues of refugees worldwide is lacking in research. Consequently, the purpose of this dissertation is to gain an understanding of the lived experiences of adult Liberian refugees matriculating within American college classrooms.
