Invasive Asian Earthworms Negatively Impact Woodland Salamanders: Competitive Exclusion, Foraging Interference, And Habitat Degradation Reduce Salamander Density, Julie L. Ziemba
Masters Theses
Asian earthworms (Amynthas spp.) are invading North American forests and consuming the vital detrital layer that forest floor biota (including the Eastern Red-backed Salamander, Plethodon cinereus) rely on for protection, food, and habitat. Salamander population decline has been associated with European earthworm-mediated leaf litter loss, but there have been few studies on the interactions between Amynthas spp. and P. cinereus. Since the large, active Amynthas spp. earthworms spatially overlap with salamanders beneath natural cover objects and in detritus, they may compound the negative consequences of resource degradation by physically disturbing important salamander activities (foraging, mating, and egg brooding). I predicted …
Course Proposal For A Mathematical Modeling Course In A High School Curriculum, Thomas P. Marlowe
Course Proposal For A Mathematical Modeling Course In A High School Curriculum, Thomas P. Marlowe
Masters Essays
In the winter of 2015, I will be piloting a course on mathematical modeling at Hawken School, an independent high school in Gates Mills, OH. As I develop all elements of this course, such as lesson plans, assessments, and rubrics, I will be mindful of factors such as the newly adopted Common Core mathematics standards, the variety of student backgrounds in such a course, and how various mathematical societies and organizations such as SIAM, MAA, and COMAP can help in implementing it. However, there is one basic question driving my interest in and design of this course: “when am I …

Great Lake Island Biogeography Of Plethodon Cinereus: Effect Of Island Elevation On Color Polymorphism, Cameron N. Eddy
Great Lake Island Biogeography Of Plethodon Cinereus: Effect Of Island Elevation On Color Polymorphism, Cameron N. Eddy
Masters Theses
Islands have long fascinated ecologists and evolutionary biologists because they provide replicated systems with which to test hypotheses regarding evolutionary and ecological theory. Because islands are relatively simple systems, they enable researchers to isolate specific factors responsible for observed phenomena. Many current questions in ecology and evolutionary biology have been addressed in island systems. For example, factors involved in the genetic divergence of populations are easier to discern in island populations because confounding effects of gene flow from adjacent populations are limited. This study focuses on isolated island populations of the color polymorphic Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) …

Dismantling A Clobber Text: An Engaged Critique Of Romans 1:26–27, Matthew Michels
Dismantling A Clobber Text: An Engaged Critique Of Romans 1:26–27, Matthew Michels
Masters Essays
This paper grapples with the traditional anti-queer reading of Rom 1:26–27, which purportedly forbids Christians from entering lesbian and gay relationships in some real sense, if not entirely. I begin by sketching this traditional reading by referring to antiqueer interpretations of Rom 1:26–27 that are top hits in today’s online world; subsequently, I suggest the direction for a standard historical critique of the traditional reading by arguing for the fundamental incongruence of ancient Greco-Roman and modern Western categories of gender and sexuality. Finally, instead of establishing my own historical-critical exegesis of the text, I discuss the necessity of engaged exegesis. …

An Examination Of Personal Humor Style And Humor Appreciation In Others, Steven Lacorte
An Examination Of Personal Humor Style And Humor Appreciation In Others, Steven Lacorte
Senior Honors Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between individuals’ humor styles and their appreciation of various humor styles as presented by others. Eighty-five undergraduate John Carroll University students completed the Humor Styles Questionnaire and rated the funniness of six stand-up comedy routines, representing either aggressive, self-defeating, or affiliative humor styles with one male and one female comedian for each humor style. A mixed model Analysis of Variance revealed no relationship between humor style and humor appreciation. However, an examination of the effect of gender showed that men were more likely than women to endorse and appreciate aggressive …
Theories Of Victim Blame, Megan Crippen
Theories Of Victim Blame, Megan Crippen

Sexual assault is a serious, traumatic incident that is all too common on college campuses. Following the ordeal, those who are assaulted are often blamed. Victim blame occurs when the victim, rather than the perpetrator of a crime, is held at least partially responsible for the crime. This study seeks to determine the values that lead to victim-blaming behavior. After responding to the Ambivalent Sexism Scale, Belief in a Just World Measure, Sexual Script Scale, and Updated Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, participants read a vignette depicting an encounter where an individual was not physically able to consent to a …

Female Mate Choice In A Mainland Population Of The Strawberry Poison Frog, Oophaga Pumilio, Meaghan Gade
Female Mate Choice In A Mainland Population Of The Strawberry Poison Frog, Oophaga Pumilio, Meaghan Gade
Masters Theses
Sexual selection and female mate choice are driving forces in the evolution and maintenance of biological diversity, and may function in the evolution of many secondary sexual characteristics throughout multiple taxa. Female mate selection has been experimentally shown to drive the evolution of color between the polytypic populations of the dendrobatid frog, Oophaga pumilio, in the Bocas del Toro archipelago in Panama. However, limited studies exist examining biologically relevant female mate choices within a single population. Using analogous experimental arenas from previous studies, females were presented with two males exhibiting phenotypic extremes from within the same population at La Selva …
“Build A School, Rebuild A City” An Economic Examination Of The Re-Structured Education System In New Orleans, 10 Years After Hurricane Katrina, Brianna Lazarchik
“Build A School, Rebuild A City” An Economic Examination Of The Re-Structured Education System In New Orleans, 10 Years After Hurricane Katrina, Brianna Lazarchik
Senior Honors Projects
The city could have died. But it didn’t. Though the damage to the city of New Orleans in 2005 was devastating in ways that shocked the nation ten years ago, its culture and people are alive and thriving today. The depth of passion in New Orleans motivated and inspired individuals to move back to the city quickly and restore its glory. However, such rapid restoration is not without vast socioeconomic challenges. Education is a vital component of any thriving social system, and the education system in New Orleans has rebuilt itself in a unique way: largely through charter schools. This …
The Effects Of Tarp On Fair Value Accounting, Christopher N. Mitschow
The Effects Of Tarp On Fair Value Accounting, Christopher N. Mitschow
Senior Honors Projects
In the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008, fair value accounting in banks has come under a great deal of criticism by some who believed bank managers were intentionally reclassifying assets to prevent write-downs, or who believed that banks were taking risks with fair value assets and liabilities that caused their distressed states. We analyzed banks’ use of fair value accounting by using the SEC’s EDGAR database to read and analyze the financial statements of public banks which received Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds and have since repaid them. We looked to see if banks classified more assets …

The Effects Of Nitrogen Availability And Competition On First Year Perrennial Bunchgrass Growth And Allocation, Jeffrey T. Walker
The Effects Of Nitrogen Availability And Competition On First Year Perrennial Bunchgrass Growth And Allocation, Jeffrey T. Walker
Masters Theses
Improving seedling survival of perennial bunchgrasses is a key goal of restoration programs in the Intermountain West. Two perennial bunchgrass species commonly used in restoration programs (Agropyron desertorum and Pseudoroegneria spicata) were exposed to two levels of N and competition treatments in a randomized complete block study in a pot study in eastern Oregon. I documented uptake, allocation and resorption of N in plants during the first year of growth. Agropyron desertorum had significantly higher rates of N uptake than P. spicata, but A. desertorum maintained lower tissue N concentrations, suggesting that P. spicata was more likely to …

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which one’s blood glucose, more commonly known as sugar, rises to above average levels (American Diabetes Association [ADA], 2015). According to the 2014 National Diabetes Statistics Report, in 2012, 29.1 million Americans age 20 and older have diabetes, up from 25.8 million in 2010, with 90-95% of those diagnosed cases being Type II diabetes (ADA, 2014). As of 2010, diabetes remains the seventh leading cause of death in America (ADA, 2014). Several studies have found regular physical activity and maintaining a normal body mass index (BMI) can significantly reduce one’s risk of developing Type …
