Background: Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for plant growth and development. Iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC), caused by calcareous soils or high soil pH, can limit iron availability, negatively affecting soybean (Glycine max) yield. This study leverages genome-wide association study (GWAS) and a genome-wide epistatic study (GWES) with previous gene expression studies to identify regions of the soybean genome important in iron deficiency tolerance.

Heterodera glycines, the soybean cyst nematode, penetrates soybean roots and migrates to the vascular cylinder where it forms a feeding site called the syncytium. MiRNA396 (miR396) targets growth-regulating factor (GRF) genes, and the miR396–GRF1/3 module is a master regulator of syncytium development in model cyst nematode H. schachtii infection of Arabidopsis. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of alkali-treated corn stover pelleted with soybean meal (STV-SBM) or dried distillers grains (STV-DDG), on milk yield (MY), eating behavior and rumen fermentation in dairy cows. Fourty-five Holstein cows were used in replicated 5 × 5 Latin squares with 28-d periods, using a 2 × 2 + 1 augmented factorial arrangement of treatments. Diets were formulated to contain 10 or 15% corn stover-based pellets that replaced corresponding proportions of corn gluten feed pellets in the control diet. Loss of pod dehiscence is a key step during soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] domestication. Genome-wide association analysis for soybean shattering identified loci harboring Pdh1, NST1A and SHAT1-5. Pairwise epistatic interactions were observed, and the dehiscent Pdh1 overcomes the resistance conferred by NST1A or SHAT1-5 locus, indicating that Pdh1 predominates pod dehiscence expression. Further candidate gene association analysis identified a nonsense mutation in NST1A associated with pod dehiscence. Allele composition and population differential analyses unraveled that Pdh1 and NST1A, but not SHAT1-5, underwent domestication and modern breeding selections. Field trials are commonly used to estimate the effects of different factors on crop yields. In the present study, we followed an alternative approach to identify factors that explain field-to-field yield variation, which consisted of farmer survey data, a spatial framework, and multiple statistical procedures. Soybean sudden death syndrome (SDS) is one of the most important soybean diseases in the Midwestern United States, leading to average losses of $396 million per year from 1996 to 2015. The causal agent of SDS, soilborne fungus Fusarium virguliforme (Fv), causes root rot symptoms and releases phytotoxins taken up by the plant to produce chlorosis and necrosis in the leaves. The main management practice used to reduce the impact of SDS is planting resistant soybean cultivars. Since the first observation of soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), in North America in 2000, it has become the most economically damaging insect of soybean in the Upper Midwest of the United States. For the last 17 yr, soybean aphid management has relied almost entirely on the use of foliar-applied broad-spectrum insecticides. However, in 2015 in Minnesota, failures of foliar-applied pyrethroid insecticides were reported and pyrethroid resistance was confirmed with laboratory bioassays using lambda-cyhalothrin and bifenthrin. A male-sterile, female-sterile mutant was identified in a transposon-tagging study in soybean (Glycine max L.). This mutant displayed abnormalities in both micro- and mega-sporogenesis, as well as gametogenesis. Vegetatively, the mutant showed no visible differences from the wild-type phenotype. Analyses of male meiotic chromosomes were done to better understand any issues that could occur to cause sterility. Wild-type and mutant anthers and ovules were cleared throughout their development, followed by confocal scanning laser microscopy to look for any abnormalities, and to determine the timing of abortion in both the male and female organs in the mutant. Breeding for pathogen resistance is an important objective to improve and protect soybean yields. In 2010, 14.4% of total soybean yield was suppressed by diseases. Improved prediction of optimal N fertilizer rates for corn (Zea mays L.) can reduce N losses and increase profits. We tested the ability of the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM) to simulate corn and soybean (Glycine max L.) yields, the economic optimum N rate (EONR) using a 16-year field-experiment dataset from central Iowa, USA that included two crop sequences (continuous corn and soybean-corn) and five N fertilizer rates (0, 67, 134, 201, and 268 kg N ha-1) applied to corn. Soybean aphids, Aphis glycines, are a specialized phloem-feeding pest of soybeans. They are known to employ different mechanisms to bypass plant defenses and reduce soybean plant yields of up to 50% a year. Once attacked or sensing distress, soybeans induce the oxylipin pathway, a biosynthetic pathway that produces key plant hormones. Among these hormones is jasmonic acid (JA), which is produced from linolenic acid (18:3). Jasmonic acid can signal the production of protease inhibitors as one of the products that obstructs the attackers’ ability to digest protein. Interest in re-evaluating the value of tissue testing to assess P and K status in corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) is increasing. The objective of this research was to study relationships between grain yield response to P and K and the concentration of these nutrients in plant tissue. Single-year and multi-year response trials were conducted in Iowa at 30 sites for P (32 sites-years with corn and 34 with soybean) and at 53 for K (67 sites years with corn and 52 with soybean) that encompassed 17 soil series.
