The multitude of specializations within biosystems engineering makes traditional capstone design courses, which typically focus on a single topic, less relevant. In our department, our year-long capstone design experience involves machine component design. While this experience is useful to students in all concentrations, ideally, students concentrating on biological-, food-, and soil and water-engineering will have a capstone design experience that integrates their unique technical capabilities. New capstone courses should also enhance the broader skills of undergraduate engineers, including teamwork, time and resource management, oral and written communication, and integrated computer skills. Four the past four years, I have taught the sophomore level course, Agricultural Engineering 243 Material and Energy Flows in Biological Systems each spring semester. During the first offering, I used the lecture method to transmit information, and homework assignments and exams to reinforce skills and test comprehension. The greatest weakness of this technique seemed the lack of hands-on experience which I gave my students, and their subsequent lack of physical intuition. In an effort to improve teacher preparation, a group of faculty from four separate disciplines—chemistry, geology, biology, and physics—worked together to develop an integrated science course tailored for elementary education majors. This four-credit course offered through the university's Interdisciplinary Studies Division fulfills part of the elementary education science requirements. The present study investigated predictors of research productivity and science-related career goals in a sample of graduate students in counseling psychology. It was hypothesized that Holland personality and perceptions of the research training environment (RTE) influence interest in research and research self-efficacy. These latter two variables, in turn, were hypothesized to influence research productivity and career goals. Using periodicals, catalogs, extant garments, postcards, patents, photographs, and newspapers, I traced the origin and development of women's functional swimwear from the bloomer costume of the 1850s to the "tank suit" of the 1920s. This research study analyzed the growth of the cognitive critical thinking skills of college calculus students from six sections of Calculus 165 at Iowa State University. For one semester subjects from three experimental sections learned calculus in a consistently facilitated active learning environment. Subjects from three comparison sections learned the same material in a traditional passive learning environment. Fidelity of treatment--i.e. adherence to an active learning format, was verified by direct observations. This study evaluated the effectiveness of Iowa's secondary school family and consumer sciences programs as perceived by students. A two-stage stratified random sampling procedure resulted in usable data from 273 graduating seniors from 98 schools during the 1995-96 school year. The sample was comprised of 135 students (53% males, 47% females) with one semester or less of family and consumer sciences education and 138 students (34% males, 66% females) with three or more semesters of instruction. Writing instruction in western Canadian universities between 1908 and 1957 was seen as a necessary technology of nation-building and the proper jurisdiction of English departments. After 1957, specialization in western Canadian universities enabled English departments to claim literature as the proper disciplinary object of their field and exclude writing instruction from their jurisdiction. Undergraduate enrollment increased over 50 percent nationally from 1973 to 1994. The proportion of high school graduates enrolling in college increased from 46.6 to 61.9 percent. These increases occurred despite increases in real tuition prices since 1985, constant (nominal) levels of federal Pell grants per recipient, and declining numbers of high school graduates. This thesis describes and examines an experimental ESL composition course that featured cooperative learning and collaborative writing , a course that also involved thematic sequencing of assignments and portfolio grading of students' individual writing. The course was a revised version of Iowa State University's English 101C (Advanced Composition for Non-Native Speakers of English), with the revisions directed toward the attainment of the official course goal of preparing ESL students for the Iowa State First Year Composition Program. The changes in the course enabled 101C students to write assignments modeled on ISU freshman composition assignments--particularly academic and argumentative writing assignments.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the approach of mentoring two college of education faculty by a graduate student and an undergraduate student. A qualitative case study approach was utilized to examine the mentoring process and its outcomes. Data were collected from two mentoring pairs in the form of journals, observations, interviews, and documents. These case studies provide descriptions and analysis of the mentoring experiences. The data in each case will provide the reader with significant insights into the complexities of student/faculty technology mentoring relationships.

The relationships between cognitive style, method of instruction, and visual skill on learning chemical kinetics were investigated. Participants enrolled in a general chemistry course were classified on each of three factors: cognitive style (field dependent, field neutral, or field independent), method of instruction (computer lesson, teaching assistant, or neither), and visual skill (high visual skill, moderate visual skill, or low visual skill). Participants who were classified as field independent scored significantly higher than those classified as field dependent on the kinetics portions of the hour and final exams. The purpose of this study was to examine an exploratory model to explain the interactive relationships among parents' number and monetary practices, and their kindergartners' number concepts, monetary concepts, and monetary skills. The 207 kindergartners participated in three number and monetary tasks during clinical interviews. Each child's father or mother completed two kinds of home practices questionnaires. By using path analysis through LISREL 8.12, the results showed that kindergartners' use of money was significantly influenced by their number concepts (i.e., cardinality) and knowledge of coins (i.e., knowing the coin names and coin values). The purpose of this research study was to examine preservice teachers' preconceptions of the role of the computer in learning and teaching and the factors effecting those preconceptions. During the 1997 fall semester, 279 preservice teachers in an introductory instructional technology course were given the three survey instruments.
