The success of weed management programs, more specifically herbicide programs, varied considerably during 2012 reflecting the importance of environmental conditions on herbicide performance. Variability of success was seen not only in the postemergence herbicide applications that continue to dominate herbicide use but also in the soil-applied residual herbicides; all herbicide applications were strongly influenced by tillage system, crop planting date, timing and amount of rainfall, and resulting weed emergence timing. Determining the proper nitrogen (N) fertilization rate is important for the economic viability of corn production. Riparian buffers are effective at reducing non-point source pollution in streams. However, to maintain their effectiveness they must be managed and maintained. Regularly scheduled maintenance should begin immediately after the buffer has been planted. It is also important to carefully inspect your buffer annually or after major storm events for any damage or problems that may have occurred. Repairs should be completed as soon as possible to maintain proper buffer functions. There are four major maintenance procedures outlined in this brochure. These four procedures are energy intensive and should be done at specifi c times during the growing season.
