This is a brief summary of many years of research on all phases of the popcorn industry. Anyone wanting more detailed information on any of the topics mentioned should write the Agronomy Department, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa.

The early history of popcorn is clouded. It is generally agreed that corn originated in the New World— along with popcorn and other subspecies including dent, flint, flour and sweetcorn.

This report includes papers presented and discussed at a seminar on demand for farm products, The seminar was sponsored by the Center for Agricultural Adjustment of the Division of Agriculture, Iowa State College, The seminar met for two hours per week for three months during the spring quarter. The seminar was organized to include about 60 members formally designated by the committee. These seminar members, as well as a formal discussant for each topic, evaluated the presentation at each session.

This bulletin is the report of the performance of corn hybrids tested at 24 locations in Iowa during the years 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958. Summaries of 2-year, 3-year and 4-year periods are shown.

The presentation of this report does not imply approval or endorsement of the hybrids tested by any of the cooperating agencies.

The state was divided into 12 districts as shown on the Iowa map (fig. 1 ). Two test fields were planted within each district.

The name and address of each cooperator and the dates of planting and harvesting are shown in table A .

This publication includes seminar papers presented and discussed by staff members of Iowa State University during the winter quarter of 1959. The seminar was sponsored by the Center for Agricultural and Economic Adjustment and met for two hours per week over a period of nearly three months. The seminar was organized to include a group of about 70 members designated by the committee listed below. The formal seminar group discus sed each paper after its presentation. The papers were revised in line with these discussions by the seminar group and recommendations by the seminar committee.
