Soil Survey Of Iowa, Report No. 81—Marion County Soils, Roy W. Simonson, T. H. Benton Nov 1941

Soil Survey Of Iowa, Report No. 81—Marion County Soils, Roy W. Simonson, T. H. Benton

Soil Survey Reports

Marion County is situated in south-central Iowa in the third tier of counties north of the Iowa-Missouri line. Knoxville, the county seat and largest town, is located 38 miles southeast of Des Moines, the state capital, and 51 miles northwest of Ottumwa. With the exception of 55 square miles in the northeastern corner, all of the county lies within the drainage basin of the Des Moines River. The region is a part of a loess-mantled drift plain, once apparently level over extensive areas but now generally rolling because of the dissection of the older land surface by streams. Occasional flat ...

Soil Survey Of Iowa, Report No. 80—Decatur County Soils, Roy W. Simsonson

Soil Survey Reports

Decatur County lies in the south-central part of Iowa, immediately bordering the state of Missouri. Leon, the centrally located county seat, is situated 60 miles south of Des Moines, the state capital, and 115 miles east and a little south of Council Bluffs.

Handling And Marketing Iowa Sweet Potatoes, A. T. Erwin, Geoffrey Shepherd, P. A. Minges May 1941

Handling And Marketing Iowa Sweet Potatoes, A. T. Erwin, Geoffrey Shepherd, P. A. Minges

Bulletin P

Among vegetable crops of the United States, sweet potatoes rank second in value only to white potatoes. In 1939, a total of 862,000 acres was harvested, producing 72,679,000 bushels with a farm value of $54,413,000. In most southern states, sweet potatoes have a position in the diet similar to that of white potatoes in the North and East.

In recent years, carlot shipments of southern-grown sweet potatoes from Louisiana to northern markets have increased because of improvements in storage and other facilities, providing a more even distribution throughout the year.

Soybean Production In Iowa, E. S. Dyas Mar 1941

Soybean Production In Iowa, E. S. Dyas

Bulletin P

Soybeans have become a major crop in Iowa. They are well adapted to Iowa’s climate and to general growing on the level Iowa soils where erosion is not a problem. The crop has many more uses than most crops, both on the farm and in industry.

Soybeans were first grown in Iowa for the home production of high-protein seed and hay. The seed has been used to substitute for purchased high-protein concentrates and the hay where legume hay is needed in the ration.

More than half of the acreage has been harvested as hay. During the 10 years, 1929-38 ...

The 1940 Iowa Corn Yield Test, Marcus S. Zuber, Joe L. Robinson Feb 1941

The 1940 Iowa Corn Yield Test, Marcus S. Zuber, Joe L. Robinson

Bulletin P

The Iowa Com Yield Test makes available to purchasers and producers alike the performance records of different kinds of corn. Many of these kinds are offered for sale to Iowa farmers. If these performance records are properly studied they should help the purchaser to select the com best adapted for his purposes. The testing fields of the Iowa Com Yield Test were located in 12 systematically scattered areas of the state. The data should, therefore, be helpful to the seed producer by indicating the range of adaptation of the different strains and hybrid combinations and the performance under different soil ...

Grape Training And Pruning In Iowa, S. W. Edgecombe, T. J. Maney Jan 1941

Grape Training And Pruning In Iowa, S. W. Edgecombe, T. J. Maney

Bulletin P

The Concord grape and grapes of this type and hardiness, which are the grapes most widely grown in Iowa, require yearly pruning if the grower wishes to obtain heavy annual yields of large-sized high-quality fruit. The illustration on the cover of this bulletin indicates the development and distribution of the fruit which may be expected on correctly pruned vines.

Far too many home vineyards are left unpruned or are incorrectly pruned with the result that they are unproductive and unsightly. There are many systems used in training the American grape, but the system which seems to be best adapted to ...

The Nitrogen Factor In Sweet Potato Production In Iowa , Philip Adams Minges Jan 1941

The Nitrogen Factor In Sweet Potato Production In Iowa , Philip Adams Minges

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The general aspects of the effect of nitrogen fertilization on the yield, storage quality and chemical composition of sweet potatoes have been covered in this three-year investigation at Muscatine Island;Sweet potatoes responded to nitrogen fertilizers whenever leaching of the natural soil nitrates occurred. The use of delayed applications of nitrogen appears to be the best approach to the solution of the problem; No nitrogen should be applied to the soil until the plants have become established. Then, providing that a loss of soil nitrates is probable because of leaching due to heavy rainfall, an initial application of nitrogen should ...

Inheritance And Physiology Of Efficiency In Iron Utilization In Soybeans , Martin G. Weiss Jan 1941

Inheritance And Physiology Of Efficiency In Iron Utilization In Soybeans , Martin G. Weiss

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Marked differences in chlorosis were noted among soybean varieties when tested on calcareous soils for the first time since their introduction into the United States from Manchuria;Testing of these varieties in nutrient solution cultures and in sub-irrigated crushed quartz media proved that this differential performance could be induced when the plants were grown on media in which the concentration of available iron was low. When grown on such media, varieties which were efficient in iron utilization made normal, green growth, while inefficient varieties shoved severe chlorosis symptomatic of iron deficiency which ultimately resulted in death of the plant; As ...
