The Use Of Prior Knowledge In Learning From Examples, Stephen B. Blessing '89
The Use Of Prior Knowledge In Learning From Examples, Stephen B. Blessing '89
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the way people acquire procedures from examples, and provides a computational model of the results. In four experiments, people learned an analog of algebra. For each experiment, the initial know ledge that people had of the task was varied. In two experiments (Experiments 1 and 3), the syntactic know ledge that people had concerning the task w as manipulated. The knowledge of syntax that participants had, particularly the ability to correctly parse the character string, was found to be a major determiner in the way participants acquired the rules. Experiment 2 explicitly manipulated participant's awareness as to …

Genomics: Past & Future
AT THE END OF THE ROAD in Little Cottonwood Canyon, near Salt Lake City, Alta is a place of near-mythic renown among skiers. In time it may well assume similar status among molecular geneticists. In December 1984, a conference there, co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, pondered a single question: Does modern DNA research offer a way of detecting tiny genetic mutations—and, in particular, of observing any increase in the mutation rate among the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and their descendants? In short the answer was, Not yet. But in an atmosphere of rare intellectual fertility, …

In 1986, Leon Lederman helped establish the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, one of the nation's first residential secondary schools created specifically for gifted students in the sciences. "Kids hate to be different," Lederman recognizes, "and very bright kids know they're different when they're in normal schools, and they react to that differentness in many different ways. But here, they're all the same. They're all . . . academically gifted and work together and collaborate and . . . have excellent teachers. While the building was a hand-me-down from the overbuilding of schools in the early '70s, it works, and …

During the last three years at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, we have been working on a partial reconstruction of Whitehead's "one subject matter," a course reconnecting biology, chemistry, earth and space sciences, and physics into an Integrated Science program.

1995-96 Annual Report, The Power Of An Idea, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy
Annual Reports
In this First Decade Report, we demonstrate how the power of ideas uniquely explored, interpreted and embodied in practice at IMSA, has inspired and empowered others to be agents of change in the transformation of mathematics and science teaching and learning within their own communities. During the past ten years, we have extended and enriched ideas such as Discovery-Based Learning, Integrative Learning, Apprentice Investigation, Institutional and Program-Based Research, Technology Integration in the Curriculum and Collaborative Inquiry. The embodiment of these ideas in our practice and in the practice of our educational partners throughout Illinois and the nation, benefits students at …

IMSA Fund Reports
It is our privilege to share with you, our shareholders, the 1995-96 report to our investors in the IMSA Fund for Advancement of Education.
In more ways than one, this was yet another exceptional year for the IMSA Fund. Once again, we secured more than one million dollars in gifts and pledges to support "margin of excellence" initiatives at the Academy. We have averaged more than one million dollars in gifts during the past four years .... allowing us to touch the future of mathematics and science education in Illinois, and the nation.
This year, a $350,000 grant from The …

IMSA History
It is our privilege to share with you the First Decade Report of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, an educational laboratory engaged in serious inquiry about critical issues of teaching and learning.
Ten years ago, IMSA opened its doors with 210 students, 12 faculty members, 21 courses, no residence halls, no computers, no external programs, many unanswered questions and an uncertain future. During our early years, we faced many challenges; these strengthened our resolve and deepened our commitment to transform teaching and learning in mathematics, science and technology.
While IMSA is still a very young enterprise, in ten short …
