Internal Phosphorus Loading In Spring Lake: Year 1, Dr. Alan Steinman, Dr. Rick Rediske
Internal Phosphorus Loading In Spring Lake: Year 1, Dr. Alan Steinman, Dr. Rick Rediske
Scientific Technical Reports
The rate of phosphorus release from sediments, and the degree to which alum reduces phosphorus release from sediments, was investigated in Spring Lake during the summer of 2003. Triplicate cores were sampled from 4 sites in the lake, and exposed to one of four treatments in the laboratory: 1) oxygen/alum; 2) oxygen/ no alum; 3) nitrogen/alum; or 4) nitrogen/no alum. Both soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and total phosphorus (TP) release rates were virtually undetectable in the alum treatments (both with and without oxygen). Low, but detectable, release rates were measured in the oxygen/no alum treatment. The highest release rates were …

Preliminary Watershed Assessment: Mona Lake Watershed, Alan Steinman, Rick Rediske, Xuefeng Chu, Rod Denning, Lori Nemeth, Don Uzarski, Bopi Biddanda, Mark Luttenton
Scientific Technical Reports
The Mona Lake watershed, located in Muskegon and Newaygo Counties in west Michigan, is relatively small in area (~ 200 km2 or 48,000 acres), but faces a large number of environmental challenges. An ecological assessment of the watershed was conducted to provide a new baseline of information, in the hope that this effort would catalyze actions to improve the health of the watershed.

Buck Creek Watershed Management Plan, Annis Water Resources Institute
Watershed Management Plans and Reports
The water quality goals are based on improving or restoring the designated uses of the Watershed and attaining compliance with the E. coli TMDL established in Buck Creek. The following long-term goals for the Watershed have been determined:
● Improve or restore the coldwater and coolwater fisheries
● Improve and protect the safety and enjoyment of fishing, canoeing, and swimming
● Improve or restore the warmwater fishery
● Improve and protect the habitats for other indigenous aquatic life and wildlife
The short-term objectives to reduce sediment in the Watershed are:
● Stabilize stream flows to moderate hydrology and increase base …
Left-Sided Directional Bias Of Cloacal Contacts During House Sparrow Copulations, Karen B. Nyland, Michael P. Lombardo, Patrick A. Thorpe
Left-Sided Directional Bias Of Cloacal Contacts During House Sparrow Copulations, Karen B. Nyland, Michael P. Lombardo, Patrick A. Thorpe
Peer Reviewed Publications
Most female birds have only a left ovary and associated oviduct. The entry to the oviduct is on the left side of the urodeum of the cloaca. This arrangement may favor males that mount females from the left during copulation if it results in sperm being placed closer to the opening of the oviduct. Therefore, we predicted a left-sided directional bias of cloacal contacts during House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) copulations. Cloacal contacts from the left outnumbered those from the right 74 to 25 (3:1) during 25 bouts of copulation at 11 House Sparrow nests. While this pattern suggests …
Exploring Contraceptive Pill Taking Among Hispanic Women In The United States, Joseph W. Brown, Antonia M. Villarruel, Deborah Oakley, Carmen Eribes
Exploring Contraceptive Pill Taking Among Hispanic Women In The United States, Joseph W. Brown, Antonia M. Villarruel, Deborah Oakley, Carmen Eribes
Peer Reviewed Articles
Data from the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth have previously shown greater risk of inconsistent contraceptive pill use among Hispanic women. We used the same data to test a culturally based model of pill use among the sub-sample of Hispanic women. Hierarchical logit analyses revealed that primary use of Spanish, negative attitudes about women in the workplace, two or more recent sex partners, and recent pill adoption were factors that increased the odds of inconsistent use. Living alone or with non-kin was associated with more consistent use, as were showing preference for a stay-at-home model of motherhood, frequent church …

State-To-State Rotational Rate Constants For Co+He: Infrared Double Resonance Measurements And Simulation Of The Data Using The Sapt Theoretical Potential Energy Surface, Tony C. Smith, David A. Hostutler, Gordon D. Hager, Michael C. Heaven, George C. Mcbane

An extensive data set of 54 time-resolved pump-probe measurements was used to examine CO+He rotational energy transfer within the CO v=2 rotational manifold. Rotational levels in the range Ji=2-9 were excited and collisional energy transfer of population to the levels Jf=1-10 was monitored. The resulting data set was analyzed by fitting to numerical solutions of the master equation. State-to-state rate constant matrices were generated using fitting law functions and ab initio theoretical calculations that employed the SAPT potential energy surface of Heijmen et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 107, 9921 (1997)]. Fitting laws based on …

Incorporating Adult Community Services In Students’ Transition Planning, Daryl F. Mellard, Paula E. Lancaster

Despite the 15-year focus on transition planning, students with learning disabilities (LD) continue to experience less positive post-school outcomes than their peers without disabilities. Outcome data indicate that experiencing successful transitions from public schooling into the adult world seems to be a complex and elusive process. The 1997 amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Act promote the development of inter-agency linkages between school personnel and community agencies in an effort to mobilize all available resources. In many cases, however, these linkages are not being made. This article provides information on available community agencies, the resources they offer, and ways school …
