The Continuing Relevance Of C. Wright Mills: His Approach To Research And What We Can Learn From It, John E. Miller
The Continuing Relevance Of C. Wright Mills: His Approach To Research And What We Can Learn From It, John E. Miller
Studies in Midwestern History
C. Wright Mills (1916-1962), remembered primarily for his 1956 book, The Power Elite, and for his 1960 essay “Letter to the New Left,” which helped launch the rising New Left in the America of the 1960s, was a major American sociologist, but he also had much to teach historians. Although he focused his research on national and global subjects, students and scholars of regionalism can also learn much from his wide-ranging, critical approach. Like all good sociologists, Mills always assumed that historical context was an essential element of any adequate analysis of society, economics, and politics. Born in Texas, …
'Just Call Me Bill': William Taft Brings Spectacle Politics To The Midwest, Jeffrey Bourdon
'Just Call Me Bill': William Taft Brings Spectacle Politics To The Midwest, Jeffrey Bourdon
Studies in Midwestern History
Historians long rated William Howard Taft’s campaigning ability during the 1908 presidential contest as below average and in need of Theodore Roosevelt’s resuscitation. Recently, they have given Taft more credit for his electioneering appearances. Taft’s ability to teach out to voters was vital to his candidacy because he ran at a time in American political history when the ability to deliver charismatic speeches and shake hands was put at a premium by larger-than-life candidates such as Roosevelt, William Jennings Bryan, and Eugene Debs.
Taft toured several regions during the campaign, including the Midwest, the South, the Mid-Atlantic, and New England. …

Supporting Caste: The Origins Of Racism In Colonial Virginia, Patrick D. Anderson
Supporting Caste: The Origins Of Racism In Colonial Virginia, Patrick D. Anderson
Grand Valley Journal of History
In 17th century Virginia, lower class whites and blacks coordinated on multiple occasions to resist the power of the ruling class elites. By the late 19th century, white laborers viewed the newly freed slaves through racist precepts and the two groups clashed on a regular basis. The aim of this essay is to explain how the shift from racial solidarity to racial antagonism occurred. Racist ideology originated in the minds of the elites and they attempted to separate the restless lower class along racial lines, first, by legal reforms, second, by creating a separate class of enslaved blacks. Anti-black racism …
Reflections Of Whiteness: The Origins, Progression, And Maintenance Of White, Marcus Bell
Reflections Of Whiteness: The Origins, Progression, And Maintenance Of White, Marcus Bell
McNair Scholars Journal
Despite the prevailing national discourse that implicates race as an outdated phenomenon, ongoing social science data identifies race as very predictive in determining life outcomes. Over the last 40 years the emergence of “whiteness studies” has sought to redefine racism from individual actions of bigoted persons to institutional systems of privilege and disadvantage. While there have been a number of studies detailing the failures of reconstruction to embrace an equal citizenry fully, and also a number of studies detailing the eventual assimilation of European immigrants, few studies have sought to connect both into one simultaneous entity. Using historiography and historical …
Senior Citizen Access To And Utilization Of The Farmers’ Market: A Holland Michigan Study, Jennifer M. Kadrovich
Senior Citizen Access To And Utilization Of The Farmers’ Market: A Holland Michigan Study, Jennifer M. Kadrovich
McNair Scholars Journal
This research examines whether or not senior citizens in the Holland, Michigan area have access to and use of the local farmers’ market. The intent is to determine any access issues the elderly population may have in the availability of fresh nutritious produce. It is assumed that many elderly people have poor health, are on a fixed income, have a lack of transportation, and suffer from decreased mobility and social isolation. Because of these limitations senior citizens may not be able to easily obtain fresh produce which may, in turn, impact the nutrition of this group.
Exploring Permanent Property: An Exploration Of The Tattoo Acquisition In The Midwest, Tiffany Cross
Exploring Permanent Property: An Exploration Of The Tattoo Acquisition In The Midwest, Tiffany Cross
McNair Scholars Journal
America has become a society in which almost anything can be bought or sold. This study, through both the ethnological comparison of contemporary tattoo acquisition research and ethnographic fieldwork in Graylin, Michigan, analyzes the increase in the acquisition of tattoos within the past two decades. Specifically, this study focuses on tattoo acquisition in the Midwest and tests whether the expectations gained from the literature are significantly relevant to this region of the United States. Through interview, survey, and participant observation, the goal of research ultimately is to analyze cultural transmission and trends. In past studies, the focus has been on …
