Examining The Effect Of Group Assignment On Upper Elementary Students' Experiences In A Technology-Mediated Collaborative Compositional Activity, Samuel C. Holmes

Middle and Secondary Education Dissertations

Collaboration in elementary music instruction has been incorporated frequently in creative activities. With the increase of technology integration, researchers have investigated its use as a mediation tool in creative activities. The nature of how children are grouped remains in contention. There is a need for comparing students’ perceptions in group work based on their group selection. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the effect of group assignment on upper elementary students’ experiences in a technology-mediated collaborative compositional activity. Research questions included: (a) How do upper elementary students perceive collaboration in a group-based, technology-mediated music composition activity? …

This qualitative, case study investigation examined practices for the incorporation of cultural texts and experiences in the post-secondary foreign language classroom and how these practices could impact the attitudes and perceptions of participants towards the inclusion of culture in the classroom and towards the target culture in general as well as their intercultural competence. While culture is often viewed as akin to language, if not as language (Byrd, Hlas, Watzke & Montes Valencia, 2001; Tang, 1999) and the link between culture and language is seen as inextricable and undeniable (Agar, 1994; Kramsch, 1993), in many lower-level post-secondary language programs, culture …

An Examination Of Pre-K Co-Teacher’S’ Perceptions And Self-Efficacy In Their Present Co-Teaching Experiences, Nicola A. Gayle

Early Childhood and Elementary Education Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study focused on pre-K co-teachers’ perceptions of co-teaching, the similarities and differences between special and general education co-teachers’ perceptions of co-teaching, and the elements of self-efficacy (Bandura, 1977) related to the implementation of the co-teaching model. Analysis of the Perceptions of Co-Teaching Survey (PCTS) completed by 34 pre-K special and general education co-teachers served as the quantitative component of the study and was complemented by a constant comparative analysis (Charmaz, 2006) of focus groups with eight co-teachers.

The integrated findings revealed that both special and general co-teachers had moderately positive perceptions of their co-teaching experiences …

Essays On Status Perceptions In The Workplace, Juanita Forrester Dec 2017

Essays On Status Perceptions In The Workplace, Juanita Forrester

Managerial Sciences Dissertations

Status, or a person’s ranking within a hierarchy, is a core organizing principle for social dynamics within the workplace. Those with high status receive a broad range of social, material, and psychological privileges by virtue of their social standing. For example, status is linked to high levels of social attention, including interest and respect from others, material rewards in the form salary and bonuses, and psychological benefits including autonomy, control, and well-being (Anderson & Kilduff, 2009). For these reasons, the question of why and how status is ascribed and the behaviors that follow these arrangements are of critical importance to …

Addressing Bullying In Schools: The Perceptions, Thoughts And Beliefs Of Middle-School Principals, Quentin Fretwell

Educational Policy Studies Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Bullying in schools is a major problem that can greatly impact the academic achievement and overall well-being of students. It also continues to present public relations and legal challenges for local schools and school districts. There is no real argument that it is a significant concern that must be swiftly addressed.

Middle-school principals who participated in my study were asked to define bullying. Subsequently, they suggest that the term be further clarified to reduce misuse and/or overuse of the word by students, parents and other stakeholders. The principals strongly felt that they could effectively address student bullying and had …

Teachers' Perceived Barriers To Effective Bullying Intervention, Megan L. Marshall

Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations

Despite the critical role teachers play in the management and reduction of bullying in schools (Craig, Henderson, & Murphy, 2000; Frey, Jones, Hirschstein, & Edstrom, 2011; Nicolaides, Toda, & Smith, 2002), minimal research has been conducted examining teachers’ responses to these negative behaviors (Bauman & Hurley, 2005; Marshall, Varjas, Meyers, Graybill, & Skoczylas, 2009; Sairanen & Pfeffer, 2011; Yoon & Kerber, 2003). Moreover, a critical topic lacking in the literature is the identification of potential barriers (e.g., difficulty identifying bullying, lack of time to address these behaviors) inhibiting teachers from successful intervention. The purpose of this exploratory study was to …

Perceived susceptibility to disease, benefits and barriers to vaccination and other constructs were collected through a survey to 1368 high school students. In this population, a scheduled adolescent healthcare visit is …

Rolling Manhood: How Black And White Men Experience Disability, Alexis A. Bender Dec 2006

Rolling Manhood: How Black And White Men Experience Disability, Alexis A. Bender

Sociology Theses

Sociologists have only recently paid attention to how men experience physical disability. However, current research continues to ignore how different racial groups experience it. The goal of this study was to examine how black and white men experience life with a physical disability. Using qualitative research techniques involving in-depth, face-to-face interviews with 10 black and 10 white men, I focus on how meanings of disability and masculinity shift after a traumatic injury. Using symbolic interactionism and social construction as theoretical frameworks, I examine how these men formed and modified meanings for disability and masculinity through social interactions. I also analyze …

This study focused on exploring what the family members of victims and offenders identify as their needs and concerns in relation to the criminal justice system, assessing if the system is effective in addressing these needs and concerns, and understanding how these families' lives are shaped by interaction with the system. Grounded theory method was used to analyze the narratives posted on two on-line message boards, one for victims' families and one …

"Excuse Me, Ma'am? That's Sir To You!" Perceptions Of Butch Privilege In Contemporary Society, Mikel L. Walters

Sociology Theses

This thesis focuses on perceptions of butch privilege in the undergraduate student body at Georgia State University. Butch privilege is similar to traditional definitions of privilege, whether male, white or heterosexual. I define it as the unearned and unacknowledged privilege experienced by a butch lesbian (perceived or self-identified) due to her occupation of masculinity. In order to investigate this topic, an exploratory quantitative analysis of how perceptions of masculinity and status are associated with butch privilege was conducted. A survey consisting of questions regarding participants’ perceptions of how differential privileges are extended to masculine and feminine looking women were presented …

Occupational Cultures: Whose Frame Are We Using?, Carol D. Hansen Jan 1995

Occupational Cultures: Whose Frame Are We Using?, Carol D. Hansen

Andrew Young School of Policy Studies Faculty Publications

Increasingly, organizations are trying to draw the energy needed to solve problems and innovate from all members of the enterprise. Most of the organizations pursuing this new learning and decision making path must first overcome problems associated with having a mix of occupational groups whose different values, priorities, and decision making strategies frequently produce cultural barriers to overall progress in reframing their culture. These cultural barriers can be thought of as occupational frames that can be both limiting and self-protective. A key strategy to dealing with these barriers can be an educational effort in culture awareness and practical systems theory …
