Parenting And Youth Sexual Risk In South Africa: The Role Of Contextual Factors, Nada M. Goodrum Dec 2014

Parenting And Youth Sexual Risk In South Africa: The Role Of Contextual Factors, Nada M. Goodrum

Psychology Theses

Black South African youth are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic, and risky sexual behaviors increase youths’ vulnerability to HIV infection. U.S.-based research has highlighted several contextual factors that impact sexual risk, but these processes have not been examined in a South African context. In a sample of Black South African parent-youth dyads, this study examined relations among parenting, neighborhood quality, maternal social support, coparenting, and youth sexual risk. Hypotheses were evaluated using structural equation modeling. Results revealed that better neighborhood quality predicted less youth sexual risk via higher levels of positive parenting. Social support was positively related to parenting …

The Contribution Of Temperament And Depressive Symptoms As Pathways To Informant Discrepancies On Parenting Practices, Yuri Shishido Aug 2014

The Contribution Of Temperament And Depressive Symptoms As Pathways To Informant Discrepancies On Parenting Practices, Yuri Shishido

Psychology Theses

Despite low/moderate convergent correlations, assessment of youth typically relies on multi-informants for information across a range of domains including parenting practices. Although parent-youth informant discrepancies have been found to predict adverse youth outcomes, few studies have examined contributing factors to the explanation of informant disagreements on parenting. The current study represents the first investigation to test the fit of hypothesized path models in which mother and son’s self-reported affective dimensions of temperament and depression were concurrently examined as critical pathways to informant discrepancies on parenting. Within a community sample of 174 mother-son dyads, results suggest that whereas the effects of …

African American Parents' Socialization Around Racism In The Education System, Allana Zuckerman Aug 2014

African American Parents' Socialization Around Racism In The Education System, Allana Zuckerman

Psychology Theses

African American youth experience individual and institutional level discrimination (e.g., Berkel et al., 2009; Jones, 1997). These experiences negatively impact their overall well-being (e.g., Harris-Britt et al., 2007; Wang & Huguley, 2012). African American parents use racial socialization to teach their children strategies to cope with racial discrimination (e.g., McAdoo, 2002; Peters, 1997). Given the positive impact of racial socialization on the negative outcomes associated with discrimination (e.g., Bynum et al., 2007), more work is needed to understand how contextual factors influence this process. The current study used qualitative methods to examine racial socialization in response to two levels of …

The Role Of Social And Endocrinological Context In Regulating Life History Transitions Among Reproductive Phenotypes In In The Bluebanded Goby, Lythrypnus Dalli, Devaleena Pradhan Aug 2014

The Role Of Social And Endocrinological Context In Regulating Life History Transitions Among Reproductive Phenotypes In In The Bluebanded Goby, Lythrypnus Dalli, Devaleena Pradhan

Biology Dissertations

During the lifetime of an organism, key events are orchestrated by a confluence of environmental, social, and physiological factors to promote reproductive success. Steroid hormones are critical regulators of fundamental aspects of reproductive life history, including gametogenesis, secondary sexual characteristics, sexual behavior, territory establishment and defense, and parenting. The steroid hormones investigated herein (testosterone (T), 11-ketotestosterone (KT), 17b-estradiol (E2) and cortisol) are linked through steroidogenic conversion pathways. This dissertation utilized an integrative approach to investigate the neuroendocrine and social contexts that regulate transitions among phenotypes in a bi-directionally hermaphroditic haremic fish, Lythrypnus dalli. Conventional sex roles are reversed, …

Can Social Networking Be Used To Promote Engagement In Child Maltreatment Prevention Programs? Two Pilot Studies, Anna Edwards-Guara, Daniel J. Whitaker, Shannon Self-Brown

Public Health Faculty Publications

Introduction: Child maltreatment is one of the United States’ most significant public health problems. In efforts to prevent maltreatment experts recommend use of Behavioral Parent Training Programs(BPTs), which focus on teaching skills that will replace and prevent maltreating behavior. eScholarship provides open access, scholarly publishing services to the University of California and delivers a dynamic research platform to scholars worldwide. While there isresearch to support the effectiveness of BPTs in maltreatment prevention, the reach of such programsis still limited by several barriers, including poor retention of families in services. Recently, newtechnologies have emerged that offer innovative opportunities to improve family engagement. …
