Examination Of The Development, Implementation, And Monitoring Of One Instructional Coaching Program In An Urban, Title I, Elementary School, Joseph Sanfilippo

Some schools and school districts have implemented instructional coaching programs to improve teaching practices and increase student achievement. A review of the literature revealed the varying roles of instructional coaches including building relationships with teachers, improving teaching practices, and providing feedback to teachers. Additionally, literature examined highlighted the important role that school leaders play in planning and preparation when implementing an instructional coaching program, and the importance of careful hiring, training, and financial considerations. Learning to teach is a complex process, especially for beginning teachers entering the profession through alternative certifications. Reflection, coaching, and feedback are supports demonstrated to assist new teachers in developing expertise. However, research on the nature and enactment of feedback is lacking, especially regarding (AC) teachers.

This qualitative multiple-case study examined three coaching dyads, the feedback given by a university coach (UC), and how it was received and used by three Teach For America corps members (CMs) within the context of their coaching courses.

Despite the presence and potential impact of instructional coaches, many schools are not experiencing significant improvements in teachers’ practices or student achievement. In gaining more insight into forces that impact instructional coach effectiveness, this study (a) explored the relationship between sources of instructional coaching efficacy and dimensions of instructional coaching efficacy [Mathematics Content & Mathematics-Specific Pedagogy (ME), Student Centered & General Pedagogy (SE), Interpersonal & Communication Coaching (IE), and Personal Coach Characteristics]; and (b) explored the relationship between dimensions of instructional coaching efficacy and instructional coach outcomes.
