This study examined one particular type of Professional Learning Community (PLC) called a Critical Friends Group (CFG). School improvement experts strongly encourage educational leaders to cultivate Professional Learning Communities in schools; however, the problem arises in the assumption many school leaders hold that adults know how to learn together and how to effectively collaborate. Training for Critical Friends Groups is specifically designed to address this assumption as well as reveal to participants what the characteristics of a Professional Learning Community are and moreover what it requires to cultivate a true learning community. Through description and analysis of the balancing and intersection of gender in the collaborative artist couples of Marina Abramović and Ulay, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude, I make evident the separation between their public lives and their private lives, an element that manifests itself in unique and contrasting ways for each couple. I study the link between gendered negotiations in these heterosexual artist couples and this division, and correlate this relationship to the evidence of problematic gender dynamics in the artworks and collaborations.

Youth living in the United States are experiencing increasing rates of mental health issues (New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, 2003; U.S. Department of Education, 2006) and are less likely to receive mental health services (U.S.DHHS, 2009). Children and adolescent mental health services are fragmented, often times ineffective, and difficult to obtain (Brown, 2006; Center for Mental Health in Schools, 2008; Jacob, 2008). Children of color and children living in poverty (ASCA, 2009; Panigua, 2005; Shavers, 2013; and Vera, Buhin, & Shin, 2006), are more likely than their peers to experience mental health disorders and less likely to receive outside …
