This research studies the effectiveness of teaching art appreciation to home schooled children ages 10-17 through a DBAE curriculum in pinhole photography via a weekend workshop. An autoethnographic approach to recording data about the students’ learning and my experience as their teacher was used in the research. Data was recorded as journal notes during and after each workshop from my experiences as their teacher and analyzed according to a grounded theory based on open coding. The purpose of this study was to determine answers to several research questions: 1.) What do pre-service teachers know about feminist pedagogy or teaching in ways that are culturally responsive? 2.) In what ways are pre-service teachers prepared to use feminist pedagogy? 3.) How is a lesson constructed utilizing a feminist curriculum? All participating pre-service Art Education students completed a Survey of Art History, a questionnaire of their background in Art History, a questionnaire on their ideas of feminist pedagogy, and completed a group brainstorming of lesson plans. The purpose of the study was to field test a unit of lessons in which students explore how a variety of social issues and value systems impact the meaning expressed in their artwork. A reliance on a teacher-centered model of instruction presented the foundation for my research. I chose to investigate constructivist theory and to implement constructivist teaching practices within my art education classroom to determine if constructivist teaching practices would facilitate a shift to a more student-centered learning environment, and to determine if constructivist strategies positively impact student learning. This thesis presents a study on how fourth graders can learn and use metaphor to create meaningful and expressive artworks. It is intended to investigate how students can understand the idea of metaphor and how they can use it to illustrate their own thoughts and ideas within their artworks.
