Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine K-8 preservice teacher (PST) candidates’ statistical thinking when selecting the best center representation for the given data. Forty-four PSTs enrolled in a Statistics and Probability for K-8 Teachers course in a university located in the southeastern region of the United States were asked to complete a 2007 National Assessment of Educational Progress test item. All 44 PSTs’ data were qualitatively analyzed for correctness and statistical thinking strategies used. Findings were that most PSTs either incorrectly selected the mean, rather than median, as the best measure of center for the given data or …

Conceptualizing And Interpreting Mean And Median With Future Teachers, Eryn Stehr Maher, Ha Nguyen, Gregory Chamblee, Sharon Taylor
Conceptualizing And Interpreting Mean And Median With Future Teachers, Eryn Stehr Maher, Ha Nguyen, Gregory Chamblee, Sharon Taylor
Department of Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications
Mathematical Education of Teachers II (METII), echoed by the American Statistical Association publication, Statistical Education of Teachers, recommended teacher preparation programs support future teachers in developing deep understandings of mean and median, such that middle grades teachers may use them to “summarize, describe, and compare distributions” (Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences, 2012, p. 44; Franklin et al., 2015). Georgia Standards of Excellence require statistical reasoning from students beginning as early as 6-7 years old, including interpretation of measures of center and statistical reasoning about best measures of center (Georgia Department of Education, 2015). This level of understanding and interpretation of …

Teaching The Monty Hall Dilemma To Explore Decision-Making, Probability, And Regret In Behavioral Science Classrooms, Kevin L. Bennett
Teaching The Monty Hall Dilemma To Explore Decision-Making, Probability, And Regret In Behavioral Science Classrooms, Kevin L. Bennett
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
The Monty Hall Dilemma (MHD), made famous by the television game show Let’s Make a Deal, can be an effective teaching tool with wide ranging behavioral science applications. The format and history of the problem are presented as well as experimental data and variations on the original design. Strategic game playing choices are discussed from several perspectives including statistics, decision making, social and personality psychology, and cognitive functioning. Because the classroom exercise is engaging and counterintuitive, it challenges students to generate explanatory ideas that draw from multiple perspectives. It exemplifies the type of detective work and creative thinking that …
Using School Choice To Connect To Mathematics Learning In A Statistics And Probability Course For K-8 Pre-Service Teachers, Ha Nguyen, Heidi Eisenreich
Using School Choice To Connect To Mathematics Learning In A Statistics And Probability Course For K-8 Pre-Service Teachers, Ha Nguyen, Heidi Eisenreich
Georgia Educational Researcher
This pilot qualitative study explored K-8 pre-service teachers (PSTs)’ learning experience in a Statistics and Probability course and their ability to make connections between mathematics and their everyday lives when given opportunities to investigate mathematics through a social issue. Data from student surveys, assessments, and written reflections will be reported, analyzed, and discussed. The researchers also describe approaches and reflect upon experiences for PSTs while studying school choice voucher programs.
Quasi-Random Action Selection In Markov Decision Processes, Samuel D. Walker
Quasi-Random Action Selection In Markov Decision Processes, Samuel D. Walker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In Markov decision processes an operator exploits known data regarding the environment it inhabits. The information exploited is learned from random exploration of the state-action space. This paper proposes to optimize exploration through the implementation of quasi-random sequences in both discrete and continuous state-action spaces. For the discrete case a permutation is applied to the indices of the action space to avoid repetitive behavior. In the continuous case sequences of low discrepancy, such as Halton sequences, are utilized to disperse the actions more uniformly.

Bios 6531 - Categorical Data Analysis, Haresh Rochani
Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health Syllabi
This course introduces statistical methods for analyzing both univariate and multivariate categorical data and count in medical research and other health-related fields. The course will introduce how to distinguish among the different measurement scales, the commonly used statistical probability distribution and inference methods for categorical and count data. Emphasis will be placed on the application of the methodology and computational aspects rather than theory. The students will learn how to apply SAS procedures to data and interpret the results.

Cooper, Arielle Selya, Jennifer Rose, Nilanjana Dasgupta
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Introductory statistics needs innovative, evidence-based teaching practices that support and engage diverse students. To evaluate the success of a multidisciplinary, project-based course, we compared experiences of under-represented (URM) and non-underrepresented students in 4 years of the course. While URM students considered the material more difficult than non-URM students, URM students demonstrated similar levels of increased confidence in applied skills and interest in follow up courses as non-URM students. URM students were found to be twice as likely as non-URM students to report that their interest in conducting research increased. Increasing student confidence and interest gives all students a welcoming place …
Opinions On Divorce In Georgia Between Different Demographic Groups, Rachel A. Melcher
Opinions On Divorce In Georgia Between Different Demographic Groups, Rachel A. Melcher
Honors College Theses
Divorce has always been a divisive topic; indeed, divorce rates differ wildly among members of different demographic groups. What of their opinions, though? What are the differences in opinions on divorce in Georgia between separate different demographic groups? My research suggests that the different lines of thought are drawn largely on religious and ethnic lines, rather than such factors as gender, age or annual household income.

Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Traditional Versus Hybrid Student Performance For An Elementary Statistics Course, Kamal M. Kakish, Lissa Pollacia, Adrian Heinz
Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Traditional Versus Hybrid Student Performance For An Elementary Statistics Course, Kamal M. Kakish, Lissa Pollacia, Adrian Heinz
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
This paper investigates the performance of students enrolled in traditional versus hybrid Elementary Statistics courses at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC). For this study, we collected and analyzed student performance data for the course goals over the spring semester of 2011. GGC is unique as it is an open access undergraduate institution, which has experienced rapid growth since its recent foundation in 2006. This presents a distinct challenge because there is a diverse student population, with various degrees of mathematical knowledge and learning capabilities. Based on the results of our findings, we have discovered that there is no significant difference between …
Time Series Analysis Of Stock Prices Using The Box-Jenkins Approach, Shakira Green
Time Series Analysis Of Stock Prices Using The Box-Jenkins Approach, Shakira Green
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A time series is a sequence of data points, typically measured at uniform time intervals. Examples occur in a variety of fields ranging from economics to engineering, and methods of analyzing time series constitute an important part of Statistics. Time series analysis comprises methods for analyzing time series data in order to extract meaningful characteristics of the data and forecast future values. The Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) models, or Box-Jenkins methodology, are a class of linear models that are capable of representing stationary as well as nonstationary time series. ARIMA models rely heavily on autocorrelation patterns. This paper will …

Comparison Of Career Statistics And Season Statistics In Major League Baseball, Mark Joseph Ammons
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This is a comparison of statistics for some of the best seasons and careers of players from Major League Baseball; using data collected on batting average, at bat to homerun ratio, and earned run average. Two teams were created, composed of season leaders and career leaders, chosen for their outstanding offensive and pitching abilities, and were pitted against one another to determine superiority. These two teams also compared against a team from each era of major league baseball. The season and career leaders challenged, the 1918 Boston Red Sox, 1927 New York Yankees, 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers, 1961 New York Yankees, …
