Academic Tenure: Defining Scholarship In The Health Professions, Kimberly Mathieu Coulton Dec 2011

Academic Tenure: Defining Scholarship In The Health Professions, Kimberly Mathieu Coulton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Higher education institutions in the United States grant academic tenure to junior faculty based on teaching, service, and scholarship. Traditionally, scholarship is defined as original research that is demonstrated by reports of scientific findings, peer-reviewed journal publications and presentations. However, workload issues, insufficient institutional support and ambiguity in tenure guidelines often hinder the scholarly endeavors of university faculty seeking tenure. The roles and responsibilities of faculty in the allied health professions are unique in that they are also involved in the provision of patient care, the development of community partnerships and the task of addressing vital workforce needs. A broader …

Separate But Equal? A Postmodern Analysis Of Educational Structures For Individuals With Disabilities, Donna Manning Dec 2011

Separate But Equal? A Postmodern Analysis Of Educational Structures For Individuals With Disabilities, Donna Manning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although curriculum theorists have sought to examine the subjective practices imposed within the context of schooling in terms of class, gender, and race, the impact of disability as a social category has been absent from the field. In this work, postmodern analysis is applied to the concept of disability in field of education; first, in terms of the nature and effects of the practices educators employ to define normality, and secondly, in the constitution of the students who deviate from the norm as subjects. The techniques and procedures of investigation, surveillance, exclusion, treatment, confinement, and medicalization developed and engaged in …

If You Can't Find Me In The School Room: Oral Histories Of African American Educators And Students During The Albany Movement, Maqueta N. Griswold Jul 2011

If You Can't Find Me In The School Room: Oral Histories Of African American Educators And Students During The Albany Movement, Maqueta N. Griswold

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I have recognized that a sense of belonging and recognition of community spirit are key to the education and liberation of African Americans. I hope we will learn from the experience of my participants during the Albany Movement. I hope that educators and students build allies with parents, administrators, and other educational workers to organize freedom movements to battle against all forms of oppression, suppression, and repression. Teachers and educators continue to work to find ways to create hopes and dreams for students to reach their "highest potential" (Vanessa Siddle-Walker, 1996) instead of disciplining their bodies and imprisoning their minds. …

These members of my family, Eunice Jordan, Sharon Wells, Ernest Jordan, DeWanna Jordan, and Darius Jordan, have endured the environmental contamination and social injustices. These family members are children and grandchildren of Willie and Lillian Wells who moved to Hyde Park in 1950 with the intention of living the "American Dream" and creating a legacy for future generations that began with owning their land and home. Since then the family has learned …

Currere, Illness, And Motherhood: A Dwelling Place For Examining The Self, Michelle C. Thompson May 2011

Currere, Illness, And Motherhood: A Dwelling Place For Examining The Self, Michelle C. Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a pathography, my experience as a mother dwelling with illness which began because of my son's illness. The purpose of this dissertation is two-fold: to examine my Self as a mother dwelling with illness so that I may begin to work through repressed emotions and to further complicate the conversation begun by Marla Morris (2008) by illuminating the ill person's voice as one which is underrepresented in the canon. This dissertation is written autobiographically and analyzed psychoanalytically. The subjects of chaos, the Self, and motherhood are examined as they apply to my illness. In addition to psychoanalysis, …

A Knock At Midnight: A Pedagogy Of Womanist Spirituality, Valerie Moss Jan 2011

A Knock At Midnight: A Pedagogy Of Womanist Spirituality, Valerie Moss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

African Americans, who have a spirituality rooted in African American religious traditions, often tend to thrive in life in spite of adversities (Billingsley, 1999; Raboteau, 2001; Ross, 2003, West, 1999; Williams & Dixie, 2003). The voices of African American women, nevertheless, remain marginalized in the larger society (Jones & Shorter-Gooden, 2003), in the Black Church (Coleman, 2008; St. Clair, 2008; Weems 1998/2005), and in academia (Pollard & Welch, 2006). Grounded in a wide array of African American theoretical traditions such as womanist theology (Canon, 1988; Grant, 1989, 1995; Weems, 1993, 1998/2005, 2004, 2005), black liberation theology (Cone, 1975/1997), beloved community …
