Self-Authorship Among First-Generation Learners: A Qualitative Study, Issac C. Taylor
Self-Authorship Among First-Generation Learners: A Qualitative Study, Issac C. Taylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the realm of higher education, an increasingly important concern is the intellectual capacity of first-generation learners. To improve their cognitive, intrapersonal, and interpersonal development in contemporary society, it is essential for institutions to gain a comprehensive understanding of these students' unique challenges. The existing body of literature on first-generation students has predominantly centered on the personal challenges and institutional barriers that impede their pursuit of higher education. However, promoting self-authorship among this student population presents a unique opportunity for faculty, staff, and administrators to facilitate and reinforce the developmental needs of students who are the first in their families …

Strategies Used By The Georgia University Registrar When Implementing Technology Change, Velma Stokes Burden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate strategies used by University System of Georgia registrars for implementing technological change and how those strategies align with Kotter's (1996) eight-stage model of change and registrars' readiness for change. The purposive sample was comprised of the respondents from the thirty-five University of Georgia System institutions. Eleven registrars revealed experiences, perceptions, concerns and ideas that were similar to the steps outlined by Kotter's eight-stage model. The study was a mixed methods approach that involved collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative research data. Three major themes emerged regarding the strategies needed to implement …

Challenges That Two Georgia Elementary Principals Face In Rasing Achievement Of At-Risk Third Garde Students, Sharonlyn Jones Reese
Challenges That Two Georgia Elementary Principals Face In Rasing Achievement Of At-Risk Third Garde Students, Sharonlyn Jones Reese
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Elementary principals are required to perform a variety of duties which include, but are not limited to, administrative and instructional tasks. Intense job accountability for all students to raise the achievement of at-risk third grade students has caused principals to face challenges and to use strategies to increase student achievement. The demands of the job of principal of an elementary Title I school are complex, especially when many of the students in the school are at-risk of failure. The legislative No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 mandates and obligates principals to do their best for all students enrolled …
Phenomenology, Film And Curriculum Theory: An Inquiry Into The Intellectual Persona Of Teachers, Tara Danielle Britt
Phenomenology, Film And Curriculum Theory: An Inquiry Into The Intellectual Persona Of Teachers, Tara Danielle Britt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teachers have lost autonomy due to the restraints placed on them by local and state standards and standardized testing. I am concerned that teachers have lost sight of their purpose as intellectuals who guide students in the development of critical thinking skills. In this dissertation, I used film to examine teachers' abilities to think critically. I used the phenomenological perspective of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Vivian Sobchack to examine how teachers physically and mentally react to representations of teachers and teaching as selected films depict them. I considered how the teachers' embodiment of film played a part in guiding them to …
Understanding The Career-Ending Injury: A Phenomenological Analysis, Christina M. Rapp
Understanding The Career-Ending Injury: A Phenomenological Analysis, Christina M. Rapp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Injury is an unavoidable risk and many times a reality in the careers of competitive athletes. While the majority of these injuries will entail some form of rehabilitation followed by a return to play, severe injuries can ultimately end ones athletic career. For example, Kleiber, et al. (1987) discovered that the sole predictor of life satisfaction following an exit from sport was whether one had sustained a career-ending injury. Thus, the purpose of this research project was to qualitatively examine the experience of a career-ending injury through an existential phenomenological perspective. Because phenomenology aims to study how people describe their …

Exploration Of Common Leadership Behaviors Exhibited By Georgia Elementary Principals From High Performing, High Poverty Schools, Donna Regina Bishop
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Principals of elementary schools continue to be required to perform many duties which include administrative and instructional tasks. The increased accountability for all students to achieve, including the lower achieving students, has made principals focus on their leadership behaviors and practices. Researchers of various studies on principal leadership behaviors and student achievement have found that leadership behaviors make a difference in the academic achievement for all students. Researchers also found that the principal's most important role is that of an instructional leader. Principals leading elementary schools with at risk learners may assist them academically when effective strategies, programs, and organizational …
