Aging Under Erasure, Pamela H. Reynolds Jan 2023

Aging Under Erasure, Pamela H. Reynolds

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aging is a multifaceted journey that is different for everyone. It is a fluid process; there is no one predictable moment or age when a particular experience takes place. For that reason, the series “Aging Under Erasure” encompasses a myriad of subjects to emphasize and illustrate the diversity and complexity of the process. My work visualizes the feelings, observations, and realities of aging in an attempt to create understanding, alter perceptions, and contemplate the universality of change. The works are inspired by personal experience, dialogical practice, and academic research. Using paper and/or traditional and unusual mosaic materials and techniques, the …

Deconstructing Abject Complacency Of Ascribed Gender, Kyle M. Hooten Jan 2018

Deconstructing Abject Complacency Of Ascribed Gender, Kyle M. Hooten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My life has been dedicated to the relentless pursuit of masculinity throughout my transition from female to male. While originally focusing on the physical transition, my attention is now focused on the social aspects of transition. For me, this involved coming out, managing legal name/gender change paperwork, and understanding a newfound, cultural privilege. This is where I draw inspiration to create my work. My process and techniques are informed by Drag Kings and Queens as well as contemporary culture and art. After performing as a Drag King for a year I developed a sense of gender that differed from what …

Female Art And Artisans In Edith Wharton’S The House Of Mirth, The Custom Of The Country, And “Roman Fever”, Julia B. Welch Jan 2017

Female Art And Artisans In Edith Wharton’S The House Of Mirth, The Custom Of The Country, And “Roman Fever”, Julia B. Welch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In early twentieth century old and new New York social circles, the marriage market’s commodification of women acted as the controlling factor for relationships, female power, and personal identity. When considering Wharton’s works for the first-hand viewpoint that she provided of the marriage market, it becomes clear that her interest in art plays heavily into the way women comport themselves within her novels. In order to discuss this relationship in Edith Wharton’s works, I’ve created terms that delineate the various ways female characters respond to the pressures of the marriage market. The best way to analyze Wharton’s women is by …

Aggro Duality, Michael B. Lesh Jan 2015

Aggro Duality, Michael B. Lesh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aggro Duality features sculptures inspired by skateboarding and custom–automobile cultures. This body of work is inspired by the manufacturing process, physicality of materials, individual aesthetic, and attention to craft. Each sculpture in Aggro Duality is created through intensive construction techniques that aim to modify materials into a unified form; which indicate a combination, a duality of mechanical and organic coexistence. Within the skateboarding and custom/automobile cultures there is an aggressive attitude that pushes individuals above and beyond boundaries of traditional standards, meaning, and styles. These cultures intend to create products that are dramatic, personalized, and stand-out from the norm. This …

Thinking Through Objects, Brent S. Williams May 2012

Thinking Through Objects, Brent S. Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thinking through objects: is the culmination of my research on objects and design. It is a reflection of my interest in the concise construction of a three dimensional object from cut, manipulated, and glued sheets of paper. As a material, paper has an implied commonness, familiarity, fragility, and temporariness, with clearly understood characteristics and qualities. In the same way, the objects the paper sculptures represent have a familiarity and temporariness about them, serving a specific role for a period of time before being replaced or updated. Selected from my own person experience, the works represent a personal history or narrative. …

The Last Word, Kristin Lawhon Kyzer May 2012

The Last Word, Kristin Lawhon Kyzer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The last word, as defined by Webster's dictionary, describes the final remark in a verbal exchange, the power of a final decision, a definitive statement or treatment, and the most advanced, up-to-date, or fashionable exemplar of its kind. I venture to explore and utilize the meaning of this well-known idiom through the creation of visual artworks that comprise my Master of Fine Art thesis research. Within this body of visual artworks, titled The Last Word, I explore the evolution and realization of self-image through the examination of disparate and reciprocal relationships. Utilizing personal symbolic imagery, provocative text and mixed media …

The present thesis seeks to show the influences to my artwork and describe the body of work found in my thesis exhibition, In Context. The feminist writers bell hooks, Jane Tompkins, and Hélène Cixous are cited as influential to the initial exploration of my content. Artists discussed include Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Annette Messager, and Robert Rauschenberg. It is further shown how poetry and prose evolve as the catalyst for content for my work and how this enforces my belief that only through examining the personal can …

The Ties That Bind, Sarah Anne Rene May 2010

The Ties That Bind, Sarah Anne Rene

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper discusses the body of sculptural ceramic work developed for my thesis series, The Ties that Bind, which addresses the impact negative life experiences have on the human psyche. Some discussion focuses on various artists throughout history who have used their work as a vehicle for addressing similar issues, as well as the philosophical influences behind my work. The Ties that Bind was inspired by personal experiences and serves as a visual, metaphorical representation of the effects dysfunctional relationships can have on one's sense of Self.

Bridging Aesthetics And Community : A Story Of A Successful School, Julie Marie Sessions Dec 2008

Bridging Aesthetics And Community : A Story Of A Successful School, Julie Marie Sessions

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study begins with the construction of a bridge that symbolizes the philosophers that impact this study: John Dewey, Elliot Eisner, Maxine Greene, and Delores Liston. The bridge is the beginning of a journey where I analyze the concepts of aesthetics and community. This in-depth analysis culminates with the study of a school that successfully incorporates aesthetics and community into its curriculum. The study is based on a methodology known as portraiture (Lawrence-Lightfoot, 1997) where relationships and community involvement are important elements in telling the story of a school. In order to fully paint this portraiture, interviews were conducted, observations …

Poiesis, Susan Lee Harmon Dec 2007

Poiesis, Susan Lee Harmon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines mark-making techniques in my art and surveys the literary and musical works that inspired it. An historical examination of the role of mark-making in art will be undertaken, beginning with Paleolithic cave art, continuing with Native American petroglyphs and pictographs, and concluding with three contemporary visual artists whose marks have influenced my work: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cy Twombly, and Susan Rothenberg. Finally, my artistic process is explained through references to the materials and rituals used to create a body of art. This thesis researches the meaning behind artistic marks, and how marks are made in my paintings and …
