Accurate Range-Based Indoor Localization Using Pso-Kalman Filter Fusion, Paul Bupe Jr Jan 2020

Accurate Range-Based Indoor Localization Using Pso-Kalman Filter Fusion, Paul Bupe Jr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate indoor localization often depends on infrastructure support for distance estimation in range-based techniques. One can also trade off accuracy to reduce infrastructure investment by using relative positions of other nodes, as in range-free localization. Even for range-based methods where accurate Ultra-WideBand (UWB) signals are used, non line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions pose significant difficulty in accurate indoor localization. Existing solutions rely on additional measurements from sensors and typically correct the noise using a Kalman filter (KF). Solutions can also be customized to specific environments through extensive profiling. In this work, a range-based indoor localization algorithm called PSO - Kalman Filter Fusion …

[P]Lace: Reinterpreting The Feminine, Nicole D. James Jan 2020

[P]Lace: Reinterpreting The Feminine, Nicole D. James

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This body of work, [P]lace: Reinterpreting the Feminine, explores the ideas of gender and the the common associations materials, colors, values, etc. have in relationship to the accepted feminine and masculine. Armed with knowledge of these assumptions, my lace sculpture and installation work aims to draw attention to the complications surrounding what we understand as feminine through material transformation. By changing select qualities of the material, I create analogies for assumptions commonly made about women. My ultimate goal is not only material manipulation, but to question some of the fundamental elements we associate with gender itself. I …

"That's A Man:" How Trans Men In The South Bolster Their Claims To Manhood, Megan Y. Phillips

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While several studies have explored manhood acts and compensatory manhood acts in cisgender men (Ezzell 2012; Sumerau 2012), few have examined them in the trans community. This research fills gaps in the literature by examining an understudied population in the South, an area of the country where queer lives are often ignored. Additionally, it allows us to continue to separate masculinities from only those born with male bodies. Using 51 interviews with trans men, I examine the experiences of trans men in the South and the manhood acts they employ to enhance their masculinity and compensate for their presumed lack …

The Smartphone Addiction Measure, Taylor Bradish Jan 2020

The Smartphone Addiction Measure, Taylor Bradish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to the multifaceted capabilities of the smartphone, college students have become increasingly susceptible to the overuse of and addiction to smartphone use. This susceptibility has led to many negative effects both mentally and physically in addition to the creation of new pathologies. There are many scales to measure cellphone addiction; however, scales to measure smartphone addiction in particular are scarce and have limitations that call into question their validity and reliability, especially for use on U.S. college students. This study aimed to investigate the validity and reliability of a diagnostic tool to measure smartphone addiction in U.S. college students. …

Maladaptive Grief: Irish And American Experiences Of Loss, Mourning, And Trauma, Abby Hey Jan 2020

Maladaptive Grief: Irish And American Experiences Of Loss, Mourning, And Trauma, Abby Hey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Literature that responds to loss and expresses mourning, a genre referred to as the elegy, traditionally follows an adaptive pattern in which a mourner reaches consolation and comfort. In the modern period, however, mourning transformed into destructive experiences that were notably private. With this phenomenon of greater social and emotional isolation, writers like Sylvia Plath, Samuel Beckett, and Elizabeth Bishop expressed rumination and irresolution. In contrast, before the twentieth century, elegies were not only more consolatory, but there was a greater emphasis on shared feeling, and this communal type of mourning is more often adaptive. By grieving together in the …

Prediction Of The Compressive Strength And Dynamic Modulus Of Fiber Reinforced Concrete By Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Measurement At Early Ages, Daniel A. Castillo Pereira Jan 2020

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates the relationship between early age ultrasonic pulse velocity and the compressive strength and dynamic modulus of steel, polypropylene, nylon, and glass fiber reinforced concrete. Previous studies prove that adding fibers to concrete alters the propagation of ultrasonic pulse velocity waves. Therefore, each type of fiber-reinforced concrete will have a unique relationship between ultrasonic pulse velocity and its compressive strength and dynamic modulus depending on fiber type, fiber volume fraction, water to cement ratio, and test age. To test this hypothesis, an experimental program comprising of one hundred eighty-nine 100 mm x 200 mm fiber reinforced concrete cylinders …

Does Maga Affect Legal Decision Making In A Criminal Case?, Jaelyn M. Nixon Jan 2020

Does Maga Affect Legal Decision Making In A Criminal Case?, Jaelyn M. Nixon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) slogan was embedded with underlying ideologies that are perceived by some individuals as promoting strict laws, policies, and punishments (Goldstein & Hall, 2017). Specifically, he is notorious for his support of capital punishment on more than one occasion (Richard, 2018). Punishment decision making can be influenced by an individual’s belonging to social categories that may have been formed based on political beliefs, gender, and other social criteria (Kahan et al., 2009). Additionally, racial disparities within the legal system persist and are known to be maintained through racially biased punishment decision making. Our research …

Analysis On Sharp And Smooth Interface, Elizabeth V. Hawkins Jan 2020

Analysis On Sharp And Smooth Interface, Elizabeth V. Hawkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In biology, minimizing a free energy functional gives an equilibrium shape that is the most stable in nature. The formulation of these functionals can vary in many ways, in particular they can have either a smooth or sharp interface. Minimizing a functional can be done through variational calculus or can be proved to exist using various analysis techniques. The functionals investigated here have a smooth and sharp interface and are analyzed using analysis and variational calculus respectively. From the former we find the condition for extremum and its second variation. The second variation is commonly used to analyze stability of …

This study adopted a geospatial approach to assess green space quantity, quality, and accessibility, and generate a green space index. This research assessed the relationship between racial structure, socioeconomic characteristics and green space inequities in all municipalities in Chatham County, Georgia with a …

Place Vulnerability Assessment In Coastal Georgia, Usa, Bless Dupeh Jan 2020

Place Vulnerability Assessment In Coastal Georgia, Usa, Bless Dupeh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The complexity of vulnerability to natural hazards requires a thorough assessment of both physical and social factors. Physical vulnerability explains the occupancy within hazardous zones and social vulnerability determines how a community can cope, respond to, and recover from disasters. The determination of both physical and social vulnerability helps find the overall vulnerability of a place and this in turn helps with hazard mitigation. This study assesses the overall place vulnerability by examining both physical and social vulnerability in six Coastal Georgia counties. This study also uses Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to generate a social vulnerability index. To obtain the …

Attitude Formation And Malleability In Response To Visual Cues And Counterattitudinal Information, Tyler W. Mueller Jan 2020

Attitude Formation And Malleability In Response To Visual Cues And Counterattitudinal Information, Tyler W. Mueller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this research is to investigate how individuals form attitudes based on the appearance of another person and how malleable those attitudes are when the individual is presented with new information about the other person. The predicted effect from this study was that participants would form attitudes about another person's agreeableness based on visual information and that when presented counterattitudinal information would be more likely to change attitudes than information that matches their initial attitude. It was also expected that negative first impressions would be harder to change. METHOD: Participants (N = 109) were presented one …

Experiments On The Neural Network Approach To The Handwritten Digit Classification Problem, William Meissner Jan 2020

Experiments On The Neural Network Approach To The Handwritten Digit Classification Problem, William Meissner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When the MNIST dataset was introduced in 1998, training a network was a multiple week problem in order to receive results far less accurate than an average CPU can produce within a couple of hours today. While this indicates that training a network on such a dataset is not the complicated problem it may have been twenty years ago, the MNIST dataset makes a good tool for study and testing with beginner and medium complexity neural networks. This paper follows along with the work presented in the online textbook “Neural Networks and Deep Learning” by Michael Nielson and an updated …

Control Of Voltage-Source Converters Considering Virtual Inertia Dynamics, Tri Nguyen Jan 2020

Control Of Voltage-Source Converters Considering Virtual Inertia Dynamics, Tri Nguyen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Controlling power-electronic converters in power systems has significantly gained more attention due to the rapid penetration of alternative energy sources. This growth in the depth of penetration also poses a threat to the frequency stability of modern power systems. Photovoltaic and wind power systems utilizing power-electronic converters without physical rotating masses, unlike traditional power generations, provide low inertia, resulting in frequency instability. Different research has developed the control aspects of power-electronic converters, offering many control strategies for different operation modes and enhancing the inertia of converter-based systems. The precise control algorithm that can improve the inertial response of converter-based systems …

Physiological Response Of Elasmobrachs During Propofol Immersion, Matthew Levendosky Jan 2020

Physiological Response Of Elasmobrachs During Propofol Immersion, Matthew Levendosky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sensory experiments require anesthesia so the animal is immobilized, however fish anesthetics have shown to depress sensory responses. Newer anesthetics may offer similar anesthetic relief, but differ in means of action so sensory responses may be unaffected. Propofol has been used intravenously on small elasmobranchs but may provide prolonged effects if used as an immersion anesthetic. Objectives of this study were 1. Determine appropriate concentration of anesthetic to minimize induction and recovery for animals anesthetized at a surgical plane of anesthesia and 2. Measure physiological response of the pupil to light stimuli during anesthetic immersion. To address these objectives, I …

Surfacant Contamination Alters Freshwater Phytoplankton Community Composition, William H. Hodge Jan 2020

Surfacant Contamination Alters Freshwater Phytoplankton Community Composition, William H. Hodge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pollution from cleaning and personal care products enter freshwater systems and have the potential to alter phytoplankton abundance and diversity. Alkyl polyglucoside (APG), a widely used foaming agent in detergents, decreases phytoplankton abundance, but whether sensitivity to APG is affected by taxonomic identity and/or the presence of competitors is unclear. Establishing taxon-specific responses to APG is important, because taxa differ in nutritional quality and palatability for zooplankton grazers.

Chapter one describes comparisons between how individual phytoplankton communities respond to the same range of APG concentrations to test hypotheses that: 1) chemical concentration determines how individual taxa respond to APG; 2) …

Professionalizing Emergency Medical Services (Ems): Still At The Crossroads, B. Jeanine Newton-Riner Jan 2020

Professionalizing Emergency Medical Services (Ems): Still At The Crossroads, B. Jeanine Newton-Riner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this work, I examine the failure of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to professionalize over the course of its existence as an occupation. I consider how popular culture has contributed to a conflicted identity between what the public sees and how EMS providers view themselves. I believe that EMS has been restrained from professionalization due to oppression by physicians in a manner consistent with how two other allied health professions, pharmacy, and physical therapy, once were. I explore the professionalization of these two occupations to identify similarities and differences that may provide insight into next steps needed by EMS providers …

Identifying Protective Factors To Early Suicide Markers: The Buffering Effects Of Savoring And Resilience, Matthew Miceli Jan 2020

Identifying Protective Factors To Early Suicide Markers: The Buffering Effects Of Savoring And Resilience, Matthew Miceli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Suicide continues to be one of the leading causes of death in the United States, which highlights the need for researchers to identify protective models through longitudinal designs (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019). Importantly, suicide prevention strategies are more efficacious when they target early indicators of suicide and consider risk and protective factors. Desire for death, the combination of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness proposed by the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicidal behavior (Van Orden et al., 2008), is one such early marker of suicidal behavior. A protect factor is methodologically defined as one that demonstrates an inverse …

Nonparametric Misclassification Simulation And Extrapolation Method And Its Application, Congjian Liu Jan 2020

Nonparametric Misclassification Simulation And Extrapolation Method And Its Application, Congjian Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The misclassification simulation extrapolation (MC-SIMEX) method proposed by Küchenho et al. is a general method of handling categorical data with measurement error. It consists of two steps, the simulation and extrapolation steps. In the simulation step, it simulates observations with varying degrees of measurement error. Then parameter estimators for varying degrees of measurement error are obtained based on these observations. In the extrapolation step, it uses a parametric extrapolation function to obtain the parameter estimators for data with no measurement error. However, as shown in many studies, the parameter estimators are still biased as a result of the parametric extrapolation …

Explicit Pseudo-Kähler Metrics On Flag Manifolds, Thomas A. Mason Iii Jan 2020

Explicit Pseudo-Kähler Metrics On Flag Manifolds, Thomas A. Mason Iii

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The coadjoint orbits of compact Lie groups each carry a canonical (positive definite) Kähler structure, famously used to realize the group's irreducible representations in holomorphic sections of certain line bundles (Borel-Weil theorem). Less well-known are the (indefinite) invariant pseudo-Kähler structures they also admit, which can be used to realize the same representations in higher cohomology of the sections (Bott), and whose analogues in a non-compact setting lead to new representations (Kostant-Langlands). The purpose of this thesis is to give an explicit description of these metrics in the case of the unitary group G=Un.

Health Behavior In International Student-Athletes, Alison Adams Jan 2020

Health Behavior In International Student-Athletes, Alison Adams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Context: International student-athletes (ISAs) are a unique population that must overcome challenges associated both with being an international student as well as with being a student-athlete(Bradley, 2000; Bentzinger, 2016). These challenges include the increased likelihood of injury and the subsequent need for healthcare. Athletic trainers are responsible for providing and coordinating healthcare for student-athletes when it is needed. In order to provide high-quality care, it is important that they understand the unique values and experiences of each individual athlete (Unruh, 1998).

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine how cultural factors and past experience impact health behavior in …

A Study On The Visual And Verbal Languages Of Typography, Ellyn E. Duncan Jan 2020

A Study On The Visual And Verbal Languages Of Typography, Ellyn E. Duncan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It takes a person 0.05 seconds to form a first impression of something new. While first impressions are quick and surface level, they are generally important in the lasting impression developed by the individual. I believe graphic designers have the ability to manipulate the first impression of their work by using the different languages of typography to command the attention of an audience and direct a planned impression. Through the testing and research of this thesis study, I aim to provide examples of how people share common responses and interpretations of visual elements and show that the visual and verbal …

The Relationship Between Co-Teaching Partnerships And Student Achievement, Tikki N. Middleton Jan 2020

The Relationship Between Co-Teaching Partnerships And Student Achievement, Tikki N. Middleton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to legislative mandates schools are required to educate SWDs in the least restrictive environment alongside SWODs, which lead to the rise of co-teaching. However, enhancing the quality of co-teaching partnerships to impact student achievement poses a challenge for many school leaders due to the absence of quantitative data involving the impact of co-teaching on student achievement. The purpose of this study was to identify correlations among the qualities of co-teaching partnerships in grades six through eight as measured by The Colorado Assessment of Co-teaching (CO-ACT), and student growth percentiles from Spring 2019 Georgia Milestones Assessment (GMAS) data in middle …

Compliance With Police: Does The Interaction Of Race/Ethnicity And Sex Matter?, Claire L. Halliburton Jan 2020

Compliance With Police: Does The Interaction Of Race/Ethnicity And Sex Matter?, Claire L. Halliburton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The often controversial nature of police use of force continues to cast law enforcement in a negative light, increasing an already historically tense relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve. As cases of police brutality continue to surface, the legitimacy of police personnel continues to decrease, but community member behaviors toward officers are infrequently explored. Questions about the influence of situational, legal, and officer/community member characteristics arise in an attempt to further explore how these factors influence community member compliance. Thus, this study aims to understand police-community relations more clearly, focusing on the effects, if any, that the …
