A Brief Consideration Of The Different Methods Of Integration, Donald Golden Nov 1937

A Brief Consideration Of The Different Methods Of Integration, Donald Golden

Master's Theses

Any student of mathematics is familiar with the importance of the process of integration. Integration is as fundamental to analysis as the basic principles of the number theory are to arithmetical calculation. Some of the common applications of integration are, finding the distance a falling body has travelled during a particular interval of time; to determine the equation of a curve, given different conditions (such as slope of the curve equal numerically to one-half the abscissa, or some similar problem); motion of a projectile; motion in a resisting medium; finding areas and volumes of revolution; length of a curve; areas …

The Value Of Relaxation As Preparation For Rational Psychotherapy, John M. Hadley Nov 1937

The Value Of Relaxation As Preparation For Rational Psychotherapy, John M. Hadley

Master's Theses

The suggested uses of relaxation given by the technique of Freud coupled with the findings of Jacobson, Ferenczi and Bagchi have prompted the investigator to make some observations of the function of relaxation in rational psychotherapy. This presupposes that relaxation is used with considerable discretion. The investigation has been stimulated by a growing tendency in the Fort Hays Kansas State College Psychological Clinic to treat patients from the standpoint of the whole individual until specific traumata can be discovered In considering the value of relaxation, it may be well to think of the individual in much the same manner as …

Master's Theses

This thesis attempts to come to some conclusions as to the relative achievement of pupils in class A, class B, and class C high schools in Kansas. The Department of Education of the State of Kansas classifies high schools of the State into three groups based on teaching staff, supervision and administration, furnishings and equipment, records and reports, and promotion and graduation. The public is generally of the opinion that pupil achievement in a class A high school is better than in a class B high school, and in a class B high school better than in a class C …

Radioactive Properties Of The Subterranean Waters Of Ellis County, Kansas., Verne Lippert May 1937

Radioactive Properties Of The Subterranean Waters Of Ellis County, Kansas., Verne Lippert

Master's Theses

Soon after the discovery of Becquerel rays in 1896, tests were made on ordinary matter to see if all matter were radioactive. Although there is evidence to show that all matter is radioactive, to a degree and under certain conditions, it has been found that the greater part of the observable effect is due to traces of radioactive material permeating all matter in general. Thus, radium and its products being the most active of radioactive substances, the surface of the earth is covered with traces of these radioactive substances but the amount varies from place to place. Moreover, determinations of …

Victoria: The Story Of A Western Kansas Town, Marjorie Gamet Raish

Master's Theses

This thesis is a history of the English colony at Victoria, Kansas, from the purchase of the land from the Kansas Pacific Railroad by Georg E. Grant in 1872 until the end of the colony in the early eighties. It does not attempt to deal in any complete form with history of the German- Russians who settled at Herzog, a mile north of the original town of Victoria in 1876. The history of Herzog is a story in itself, an intensely interesting one, but too long to be more than suggested in this thesis. It is given only for the …

Trends In Social Thinking, 1910-1935, Mary Elizabeth Williams May 1937

Trends In Social Thinking, 1910-1935, Mary Elizabeth Williams

Master's Theses

This topic has been chosen because of an interest in the economic and social conditions of the present day and a desire to know just how much the changing events of the world’s history during the past twenty five years have affected our attitudes toward certain economic problems. In order to do this, five fields of interest were chosen. These are, banking practice and legislation, agriculture, public finance, labor problems and trusts. I have attempted to draw some conclusions which will show a definite trend toward certain attitudes of thinking of the present day which are different from the attitudes …

Sherwood Anderson: An Appreciation Of His Life And Fiction, Kenneth Davenport May 1937

Sherwood Anderson: An Appreciation Of His Life And Fiction, Kenneth Davenport

Master's Theses

It has been only in the past four decades that Americans have awakened to the fact that they could have a literature which is not dependent on any foreign country, particularly that of England. It has been only in this period of time that an interest has been awakened in the history of American letters and the reasons for their development along their specific lines. Without attempting to assign causes, it is at once in evidence that the literature of America, with only two exceptions, to the beginnings of realism is strongly tied to the literature of Europe, particularly to …

Achievement In Spelling In The Elementary School With And Without The Use Of Textbooks In The Hands Of Pupils, Ernest R. Allbert May 1937

Achievement In Spelling In The Elementary School With And Without The Use Of Textbooks In The Hands Of Pupils, Ernest R. Allbert

Master's Theses

The specific problem of this thesis is to determine the relative worth of two methods of instruction in spelling, namely: (1) achievement in spelling when pupils study the spelling lesson then the words are written on the blackboard, and (2) when the spelling words are studied in the orthodoxy way – from the textbook. In so far as the writer has been able to determine there is little in the literature of education concerning experimental investigations of the relative worth of these two methods.

The Theory Of Determinants: Some Special Forms And Applications, William Ralph Eikelberger May 1937

The Theory Of Determinants: Some Special Forms And Applications, William Ralph Eikelberger

Master's Theses

The theory of determinants is a relatively new branch of mathematics; it was not firmly established until a brief 200 years ago. It was not until the middle of the 18th century that Cramer, one of the independent discoverers of the fundamental idea, was fortunate enough to attract attention to the theory of determinants. Much of the literature is written on the assumption that its reader has a good background in the subject. Then other authors just give the fundamental properties of determinants without proof of their statements. These latter authors are not interested in the mathematical theory of determinants, …
