The Myth Of The Declining Reference Statistic: Revealing Dynamic Reference Services Through Digital Analytics, Melissa Del Castillo, Marissa C. Ball Jan 2018

The Myth Of The Declining Reference Statistic: Revealing Dynamic Reference Services Through Digital Analytics, Melissa Del Castillo, Marissa C. Ball

Works of the FIU Libraries

It seems customary practice now that there is a need for libraries to “justify” their relevance, impact, contributions, and more. Traditionally, we do this by looking at some basics - how many people walk through our doors, how many classes/workshops are we teaching, and how many people did we help at the reference desk? It is hard to deny when looking at these statistics that there are some obvious trends. In the reference realm, this traditionally translates to decreasing statistics - but are these statistics telling the whole story? Are our reference desk statistics really going down? Are there other …

Researching The “Un-Digital” Amish Community: Methodological And Ethical Reconsiderations For Human Subjects Research, Tabetha Adkins Oct 2011

Researching The “Un-Digital” Amish Community: Methodological And Ethical Reconsiderations For Human Subjects Research, Tabetha Adkins

Community Literacy Journal

This article argues that methodologies for studying community literacy must be reexamined in light of advancements in technology and the research community’s relationship to those technologies. Based on her ethnographic study of an Amish community in southeast Ohio, the author offers a counterpoint to discussions of literacy and digital tools by showing how differing perspectives on technology led to complications during the data collection process. Furthermore, Adkins argues that methodologies cannot always be dictated by a template or by “best practice” and that researchers and IRBs should be more flexible in their thinking about how to treat research communities ethically.

Issues For Managing Tourism Information, Robert M. O'Halloran, Donald F. Holecek

Hospitality Review

The need for a high quality tourism database is well known. For example, planners and managers need high quality data for budgeting, forecasting, planning marketing and advertising strategies, and staffing. Thus the concepts of quality and need are intertwined to pose a problem to the tourism professional, be they private sector or public sector employees. One could argue that collaboration by public and private sector tourism professionals could provide the best sources and uses of high quality tourism data. This discussion proposes just such a collaboration and a detailed methodology for operationalizing this arrangement.
